I'M IN SHOCK 2, by snowhome on May 29, 2009 19:31:05 GMT 1, A couple of weeks ago I listed two prints for sale on ebay. Happy Choppers and The Hick by Jamie Hewlett. Earlier this week I also listed a Monkey Queen. I was contacted by ebay by someone telling me that I was selling fake prints and was all over the forums. I found this site and the thread started by colonelkurtz relating to the sale of the Happy Chopper print . Having read the speculation, blinkered opinion and conjecture relating to the sale I felt the need to re-address the balance with the facts. The information listed on the ebay auction was and is completely true. I do own a contemporary design store in York which has been trading for 8 years. In 2003 ( around June/July ) I was send a cardboard tube containing 8 original silkscreen prints and a covering letter. At the time I was involved in a shop relocation and the prints were placed in our new stockroom with a load of wallpaper samples. The covering letter was from a company who I think were called POW, the letter basically said that they were representing exciting and emerging artists and were producing prints that could be purchased by stores like mine for resale. At the time I was not interested in buying prints to sell in the shop, I used the tube that the prints came in to send out some stickers to a customer and disposed of the letter, I even gave away a Golf Sale print to a lady who worked for me as she liked it. At the time I was unaware as to who the prints were by and the prints remained rolled up on the top shelf in the stockroom for 5 years. I rediscovered them last year and then realised that they were Banksy and managed to work out what some of the others were too. All the prints were marked TEST in the same pencil handwriting in the bottom right corner. Thet were all loosely rolled but were slightly creased as other samples were lying on top of them. The full list of the prints that I received is: 1/ Banksy - Golf Sale ( gave away ) 2/ Banksy - Happy Choppers ( sold on ebay ) 3/ Banksy - Monkey Queen ( currently on ebay ) 4/ Jamie Hewlett - The Hick ( sold on ebay ) 5/ Jamie Hewlett - Kid ( still have ) 6/ Faile - Bunny Girl ( still have ) 7/ Pete Fowler - bat skulls ( still have ) 8/ Another that I cant identify ( black, turquoise and pink print with flying horse bottom left and sinister man with axe top right ) The forum thread implied that I was faking prints and profiteering , there were some fairly heavy handed assumptions and allegations leveled against me as the seller. I can assure all who read this that all the above is genuine. An auction house looked at the prints for me and believed them to be authentic but without provenance, for that reason the would not sell them at auction but suggested the ebay route. I have only stated fact in these ebay auctions and have not attempted to deceive. If I was interested in making fake prints for profit I would have devised a better system than selling 4 or 5 slightly damaged prints. I realise that what I have are prints that are not part of a limited or signed edition run and I also realise that they are not some cheap and nasty Camden market souvenirs. For that reason I believe there value is somewhere between the the two and is ultimately what someone is prepared to pay for them. I hope this clarifies some points and would also like to thank Howies, Achtungbono, theycallmesteven, ross and others on the Forum for offering a more balanced and open minded perspective.

I'M IN SHOCK 2, by Daniel Silk on May 30, 2009 10:19:23 GMT 1, Well done for coming on and posting
I apologize for those who commented on the other thread, who clearly never want to accept that prints like your do exist. I very much doubt you will get any constructive feedback from them, and I fear the best we can hope for is that they might learn a little from this.
I wonder if POW kept records of who sets of samples were sent out to?
I guess that really POW would rather prints such as this never existed but it appears they do, and is now causing a few problems. I would think to continually deny the existence of them is not really solving the problem, and just leaves even more questions unanswered

I'M IN SHOCK 2, by snowhome on May 31, 2009 9:00:06 GMT 1, thanks. Also wanted to point out that I understand why people do get passionate about subjects like this. I did a printmaking MA at the RCA in London ( didn't want to add this to my first post because it makes me look like a forger in light of the accusations. Truth is that was 15 years ago and I no longer have a studio or printing facilities and run a shop instead ). It does mean that I have a knowledge and understanding of contemporary art practice , about simulation, copyists and shallow imitations of the genuine article. I understand why people defend the authenticity of the original and why cheap and nasty pastiche's are derided by those who really care. I stand by these principles too, it is not in my nature to rip off the work of another artist. Those of you who still believe the prints that I have are fakes and that these posts are part of the fake are more than welcome to come and visit me in my shop if they are ever in York. Pop in for a cup of coffee and a chat, you can look at the prints that I have left and make your own minds up when presented with the images directly rather than judging from a distance.

I'M IN SHOCK 2, by snowhome on May 31, 2009 14:07:49 GMT 1, r. Funny you mention the spots, when I was at the RCA my friend did some lithograph editioning in his spare time for some extra cash. He did a small 30 x 30cm print for an emerging artist to promote his first solo show in 1993. He blagged a couple and gave me one. The print was called Pharmacy and was for Hirsts first show in New York. It has been in my spare room for 15 years and I'm now looking at getting it valued. I can do you very good homemade scones to go with the coffee from the cafe next door anytime you're up this way.

In the US we often call that "Eating Crow" in that they jumped the gun, made baseless accusations and were completely and utterly WRONG about the provenance of these prints... Typically, one apologizes but that must be a regional thing... ;D
