LBP :: Culver City 6023 Washington Blvd. Culver City, CA 90232
October 13th โ November 3rd , 2012 Artist reception: Saturday, October 13th , 6-9p
Culver City, CA โ LeBasse Projects is proud to announce โPersistence of Vision,โ new works from Seonna Hong. This anticipated opening is Hongโs first solo exhibition with LeBasse Projects and first in Los Angeles in seven years.
After exhibitions in Tokyo, New York and a recent feature at Pulse in Miami, artist Seonna Hong returns to exhibit in Los Angeles with a new body of work titled โPersistence of Vision.โ This latest series of paintings and sculpture delves into the ideas of perception, how imprints are made and how those impressions project upon the picture of our experience. The process in which Hong develops her work has evolved from one of careful and concise planning to one of organic exposition. The deliberate quality remains in the application and symbolism throughout, but the result is more spontaneous. Her characters exist in an unnatural-natural world that comes to life around them. The landscapes now move from the background into the foreground, co-existing with her characters of girls as protagonists and not only embellishing the story but often telling it.
The Persistence of Vision is a theory based on the idea that there is a visual memory, an iconic imprint that retains an image long enough to project upon the next image directly following it. This phenomenon lends itself to the way that film and animation is viewed by seaming together a succession of images to complete a picture. There is the natural association to this concept with Hongโs experience as a production artist in Animation. In this medium, a characterโs movement comes to life both by a series of drawings as well as the brainโs willingness to fill in the gaps. A metaphor emerged then for Hong: why our brains fill in the โgapsโ of our life experiences the way they do, how the preceding frame informs the following one, and what is being projected onto each successive frame. How does all of this affect our perception? The way the โgapsโ are filled are wholly subjective in the way each personโs individual experiential picture is completed and formed. Although the Persistence of Vision is the explanation of a perceptual illusion rather than a scientific fact, this metaphor resonates with themes that have been developing in Hongโs recent work. Found objects, sculpture and various ephemera round out this new series of paintings.
With a new vision and new development process to her work, Seonna Hongโs latest exhibition is sure to be highly anticipated and will likely be one of the most discussed shows in LA this Fall.

Upcoming: Seonna Hong show @ LeBasse Projects, by highbrow on Mar 5, 2013 7:03:52 GMT 1, I have been a huge fan of LeBasse Projects and spent a great deal of money with them over the years and all of late I have had items held hostage by them, not been able to get emails returned ( they have just been ignored ) and rarely have been able to get a text message replied to. Well I had a sculpture shipped to me and it arrived damaged, I mailed it back and was told even though it was a edition that no more were available. 5 months later I learn the gallery is offering one of the sculptures to a fellow client who I know. I confront the gallery about it and I am told they will make it right, Months pass and countless emails go to the gallery where I am told 1. The item will ship when the Gallery owner returns. then 2. The package is ready to ship but the gallery owner is at fairs ( why can only the owner ship not sure ). 3. Finally they even confirm my address for shipping which never happens. While this is taking place I inquire about having an artist do some hand finishing to a print which I purchased and was still at LeBasse gallery. I am told nothing can move forward till after the artist is done getting ready with his show. Well his show is completed and coming down I have emailed regarding the print and sculpture and still no response ( please keep in mind this is over a 10 plus month period ). I have sent my address, offered a fedex and UPS account number for shipping all to be ignored. I even inquired about the availability of the artists show and prints which the gallery has available as I know only half the show was sold, and still no reply regarding any of it.
This is a gallery I had a very good relationship with, when I learned of the sculpture issue I was still looking to do business, then I learn the sculpture which I was told was ready to ship, packed to ship and going to ship was offered to a customer at the most recent show opening shows me two things, one this gallery can not be trusted at least by me, and two they are not interested in taking my money so they must not be effected by the current economy.
