RCA Secret 2013, by jusdeep on Mar 16, 2013 10:32:45 GMT 1, And adding to what Pez said previously, if you're picking cards by Opie or one of the other big names; unless you're a golden ticket holder and one of the first in line you only have a very slim chance. Saying that 2011 saw me 4 cards in my top twenty selection and I think I'm right in saying the Anish Kapoor still remained until the end of the day or way left unsold. You're much better off picking cards you like and want to have on the wall than trying to spot a big named artist. It's a great experience and an exciting day out. Met some great people in the queue at the last event.

RCA Secret 2013, by Dellboyy on Mar 16, 2013 15:48:24 GMT 1, Yeah love the idea, but too far for me to get to. If i were going i'd just pick up from a list of cards i like. I'd much rather have something up on my wall by an unknown that i like rather than something stuck in a draw by a big name that i don't.

Thankfully the two things are often not mutually exclusive. There are plenty of amazing cards by famous artists. Although in fairness there is a fair amount of shite as well.

RCA Secret 2013, by jusdeep on Mar 16, 2013 19:13:59 GMT 1, I seem to get this all the time but manage to get it back and have started listing all the numbers just in case. Had the same problem in previous years, when even logged in I would have to start from scratch or go back to previous history.
Wasn't as impressed with the cards this year but there's still some great ones. Have to say that some of them are once again just plain lazy. Online it looks like an original and in the flesh it's a printout. Half of my list got wiped on viewing, but at least it helps with the thinning process.

RCA Secret 2013, by Ruggs on Mar 18, 2013 15:31:15 GMT 1, I know this is a long shot but if you don't ask, you don't get. I had planned to go along to this this coming weekend with train ticket and sleeping bag at the ready, however it would now appear I will be flying to Bologna, Italy for next weeks book fair. I'm hoping some very kind sole out there would be willing to grab me a certain postcard I have my eye on. If you can help me out I would be willing to add more cash to make it worth your while. Please get in touch via PM. Thanks!

RCA Secret 2013, by joe123 on Mar 18, 2013 15:58:43 GMT 1, From past experience, what time do people actually start arriving at this? What kind of crowd? I'm starting to think if you aren't in the first 50 you might as well give up.

RCA Secret 2013, by raindogs on Mar 18, 2013 17:23:36 GMT 1, If you aren't in the first 50 you probably will not grab famous artists pieces (this year Opie, Rego, Bailey, Baldessari, Christo) even if sometimes they are well hidden. But also being in the queue (arriving between 5 and 6 am) you still have a good choice of great postcards. So it depends by what drives you to RCA Secret: if you're looking for the chance to have for ยฃ 45 an Opie probably it doesn't worth to remain in the queue if you aren't the lucky winner of the raffle. In my opinion the experience of the queue is indeed the best part of the game regardless of the postcards available.

From memory he has bagged Hirst and Richter from the main queue in the past? The first 50 raffle winners doesn't mean the ones with the most knowledge and everyone has differents tastes. From experience you as likely to see the first 50 hoover up the Peter Jones, Nick Park and other more obviously aesthetically pleasing pieces.
Plus this year the Rego's and Opie's are better hidden then they have been in the past and there are no easy Emin's to be had.

But I have a doubt and so a question: if for example the Rego's and Opie's are so hidden to be not so easily recognizable (and they are well hidden, for example I am not so sure to have recognized them) are their works so significant for the collector looking for an investment? Also considering the risk to choose the postcard by some unknown artist or art student (even if skilled) who has made his piece in the famous artist style. I will be happy in the queue with a list of preferred postcards in my hands regardless of the name of the artist. Or better: I have a couple of preferred artists -not stars- I followed in the past editions and I will go for them.

RCA Secret 2013, by pezlow on Mar 18, 2013 20:23:39 GMT 1, I've got from the queue in the past Hirst, Richter, Grayson Perry, Olafur Eliasson and plenty of other great cards. It is becoming harder each year though to this as more and more people acquire knowledge. Last year my list was absolutely decimated by the time I got to the front of the queue. I still came away with 4 lovely cards though all of which are now framed and on the wall.

Want to compare lists Pez!
Oh and I agree, buy what you like. I have been lucky enough to win the raffle in the past and so have taken the opportunity to take a punt on a "big name" or two whilst also going home with one of my (or more usually my wifes) favourite cards.

RCA Secret 2013, by raindogs on Mar 23, 2013 12:39:13 GMT 1, I didn't win the raffle and so I was in queue at 5:15. Cold, snow and wind, but as usual warm atmosphere (even if somebody collapsed for the cold, but everything finished well). I managed to buy two postcards of artists I know and appreciate Laurel Johannesson and Cesar Baracca with two great pieces this year. So for me not a so great secret. I took two other postcards, maybe I could make a more hazardous choice. The cards I assumed to be by Julian Opie were already sold when I arrived at the desk. Curious to see if I recognized them. At the end of the day a great experience.

RCA Secret 2013, by Coach on Mar 23, 2013 12:55:00 GMT 1, Well done to those that braved the cold.
Pezlow, how did you get on - your choices are usually pretty impressive!
Is there any reason why the organizers don't do this during the summer, so the die-hards do not have to suffer such inclement weather?
Post pics people - please.

RCA Secret 2013, by jusdeep on Mar 23, 2013 13:25:12 GMT 1, I decided probably wisely not to queue overnight and headed down at 4am this morning. Haven't even had a chance to check. Only one I recognised was a very nice Paul Benjamins. Also Katy Moran, Katherine Palmers-Needham and Michael Minas. All in my top 25. So came away extremely happy with all of my choices.

RCA Secret 2013, by pezlow on Mar 23, 2013 14:00:47 GMT 1, I got a card by Ron Fuller who was a contemporary of David Hockney at the rca. The card is a photo of Hockney in a waistcoat taken by Fuller. I'm very pleased with it as it is a piece of art history. I also got an Alan kitching and a Ryan Mosley. My fourth card was a beautiful painting. I had no idea who it was by when I bought it and it is by Zadie Xa, an MA fine art student.

RCA Secret 2013, by jusdeep on Mar 23, 2013 14:37:30 GMT 1, I take it the Opie's were the green horizontal stripes? The Moran was a grey painted piece on canvas Perry. I though it might have been Susie Hamilton but loved the style and had quite a few colourful pieces already on my list.. I'll post some pics in a few minutes
