Amazon Art , by Deleted on Aug 15, 2013 10:31:38 GMT 1, Interesting discussion... I found another website that's similar to Amazon's model (albeit as it's singular function) giving artists and galleries a platform to show and sell their work to a larger audience. They provide the platform and 'reach', the artists and galleries use it a bit like the bay, having their own shop where they can upload and manage the work they have on the system. It's large and piles the artists high, with tonnes of styles and a range of quality, but think they're passionate about art and very organised. Not sure why I'm posting this, but probably because of the discussion about large interweb based companies shifting the location of art for the masses from bricks and mortar galleries to a virtual space. Long-term will it have an effect, putting smaller galleries out of business, dumming down the quality with sheer numbers? Haven't got a clue... but I think the wibbly wobbly world is not going away, and in time, with new technology will only integrate itself into our everyday lives even more. Personally I don't think it's about fighting the technology, or how new formats uses that system, it's more about choosing your battles. And for any artist/gallery to set their ideological/moral standpoint and stick to it, if you're comfortable with a gallery, organisation or website that can aid your career then that's cool. But as this thread points out there are strong opinions that cause heated debate, often coming less from the art and more from the political and sociological angle associated with how that company operates. Don't think that answers any of the points made on this thread already, has probably just allowed me to ramble on again! The websites artfinder.com, have a look and see what y'all think, as I said it's got 1,000's of artists and galleries with a massive range of styles so probably not to the tastes of many on here. And yes I am on there, but this isn't meant to be a self-promotion, just my opinions on a small part of this discussion. MY big question is... would I use Amazon to promote my work if I knew I'd reach 1,000's more prospective buyers, potentially sell a load more paintings and possibly make a lot of money... I don't know. [ any inaccuracies, b**ls**t, spelling mistakes or waffle in this post is due to me typing this far too early in the morning and not having had a coffee!]
Good post and it shows that there are already other websites doing what Amazon are doing. As you've pointed out a website such as Amazon could help an artists career and help to pay their bills too if it gets their art seen by more people.
These websites are available for anyone who wants to use them. They won't take over from galleries as people will always like the 'feel' of the galleries or to come in just to browse the walls. These are just another option available to consumers if they choose to buy art this way.

True but the original thread was started by Pure Evil. His artwork won't go down in quality at all just because he's now selling on Amazon.

Amazon Art , by freakinstyle on Aug 15, 2013 12:23:20 GMT 1, Ok, so I haven't read the whole discussion and I honestly don't know what to do myself in terms of avoiding certain companies, but have to address some points:
1 It isn't right to think; oh, a company follows the rules and therefor it is right. You can't make rules as airtight as you want to keep everybody in check. You also don't want that otherwise we get a MASSIVE bureaucracy. No it is normal to expect anybody to do 'the right' thing even if there are no rules that make them do it. Just like you might help a granny to cross the street, you don't say: There is no rule that says I have to, no you do it because you understand the morals and ethics.
2 Morals and ethics get very diluted in big companies, because they are to influenced by making profit. That is what they are there for and so create a culture of money making, regardless whatever, to which loads of employees are exposed to. 1 employee can't change behaviour of 100 colleagues. Besides, at the end of the day they close the door behind them go home and don't feel the pain and probably start complaining about the morals and ethics of the banks, hypocrisy. But if you are a small butcher in a village, you are bankrupt within a year and people would point at you in church in the same village.
3 Yes, I do think if you dodge tax for perhaps 100 pounds that you are being as immoral as Amazon only on a smaller scale.
4 It isn't easy then to just say you will avoid all those companies. I WOULD LOVE TOO! But we humans organise ourselves in such ways that we need to do what others do, I HATE THAT, in order not to loose out. Sort of 'Freerider' effect; if you are the only one avoiding, you will loose, if everybody avoids, everybody wins. Suffocating human stupidity. I say that a group of humans are behave more stupid than the average IQ in the same group.
5 forgot this, but was probably the least important one anyway....
I used to be all: let the market solve the problem because they are more efficient, but we have so many examples where it doesn't work and the key reasons is the size of the companies, they can now force governments to do stuff... why, because they often have a budget the size of a small country. All a bout power people, like it has always been!

Amazon Art , by robdog on Aug 15, 2013 13:22:06 GMT 1, Oops think you made a mistake there DD. OK now it's fixed. so anyway...... let's just leave DD and his trolling to one side for now!! I wish Pure Evil all the best with this. Artists do have to look for new avenues to sell their work and make a living. Amazon is a company that almost everyone knows so hopefully by using them he will be able to reach out and be seen by people who otherwise would not have seen his work. To anyone who doesn't agree with Amazon then it's simple - don't buy from them! This is your right and nobody is forcing you to buy from anyone although obviously you should then never buy or sell on Ebay again either.
I can't wait for the day I come on here and amboguy isn't arguing with someone!

Yes being such an active member and contributing so much yourself to the forum it must be very frustrating for you.

When you have no real response and nothing to add to the discussion you can always copy and paste a photo - it's easy eh?
But I do appreciate the time it took you to do the Google search......

Amazon Art , by curiousgeorge on Aug 15, 2013 17:05:39 GMT 1, Ambo...
From the outset the op posted 'winge away'
Perhaps suggesting it might not be a popular opinion with some members
Can members share different opinions, without you becoming shouty and talking down to people? Some say the minute you do that, you lose the arguement/debate.
People are probably commenting about Amazon because it's a thread about them! Start a thread on other tax avoiding blue chips and I'm sure the same people will chime in?

Yes they can whinge all they like ABOUT AMAZON (which is what this thread was all about)
When someone comes on like this robdog character just to take the piss out of people and get personal then that's a different matter. OK I expect this from DD but not from this joker.
I was having a resonable debate with Happymeal until DD and robdog decided to get involved and start getting personal. Maybe you feel that this is OK but I don't.
Now maybe you should read this thread again and look at where it all went downhill.

Amazon Art , by freakinstyle on Aug 15, 2013 17:48:17 GMT 1, Ok, let I add this, specifically for those that think that all the complaining types need avoid all the companies. It does have a very logical ring to it, doesn't it? But this reply is a request for consistency in someones behaviour towards unethical companies. I admit, I complain about them a lot and are by far consistent in my choices because you CAN'T avoid them. The only way to do that is to live in Siberia in a wooden cabin and grow your own food, but being away doesn't change anything.
This is not extreme; where would you buy your food? How would you search for a job? Which medicines would you buy? Hell, where would you buy vegetables that haven't been profited by Monsanto?
And so, I actually agree with people thinking it isn't right to judge PE on this. Yes, I would like to see otherwise, but I would like to think he struggles with this consistency too and compensates in different areas, just as I try to do!

Thanks for proving my point is that there are some people on here that don't actually have anything to say about the subject they're supposed to be commenting on.
Now do you have anything you would like to say about Amazon Art or are you just s**t stirring?
Thought not. Now come back when you have something proper to say.

I read this forum more than I post on it but I have noticed that lots of people just like to yry and get a rise by winding people up. These people are obviously just trolling so just don't give them the satisfaction and ignore them.

Amazon Art , by Deleted on Aug 15, 2013 20:37:37 GMT 1, Thanks for proving my point is that there are some people on here that don't actually have anything to say about the subject they're supposed to be commenting on. Now do you have anything you would like to say about Amazon Art or are you just s**t stirring? Thought not. Now come back when you have something proper to say. ok Mr scary man My little bit on amazon art, or, if You'll allow me, amazon itself. In short I will not support any business that I am aware implements Zero Hours work contracts. There, done Free postage, but a decimated arts sector, lol. Not a good trade off really hey. A shame, because they made buying books and literature a whole lot easier. But f**k em, they could quite comfortably afford to pay the tax instead of spending millions lobbying against changes to corporate tax avoidance schemes. For new releases I switched to Guardian Books. For some titles, it's difficult to avoid using Amazon. Doesn't mean you have to actively support or defend their right to screw the populace over though hey. Unless you're in the "shareholders" class I guess. Good luck to PE, he's hardly a corporate shill, Amazon, only when other alternatives fail.

Amazon Art , by Deleted on Aug 16, 2013 8:59:46 GMT 1, So do people here not use eBay to sell and buy art due to their tax avoidance? okay so here's the thing, there's many things in life and in consumer society that are done badly, for our bodies and for the people who work in those industries, all anyone can do is try their hardest to make the choices that fit their moral compass (which will obviously vary on knowledge and intellect)...so ergo to bring it down to a simple yes or no isn't easy nor does it actually discuss what this thread is about which is Amazon Art and PE's use of it...the more intriguing question would be, will you buy his art from this source or in fact Ebay?

Amazon Art , by Deleted on Aug 16, 2013 15:43:03 GMT 1, This'll be my last post in this thread I promise. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Big thanks to those that did post in this thread. I've learn't more. I wish it didn't have to include PE so much. What gets me so much about this whole thing is that despite the knowledge that bad/wrong things will happen, with regards to our choices of who we do business with, we will still so easily ignore that knowledge if there's something in it for us personally. I'm new to thinking about the consequences of my actions. It isn't easy. I personally just can't ignore these things so easily and I'm getting better at doing the right thing the more I understand. It's about knowledge and education as most things are. I just want to put the way I feel about it out there and with the help of other members that feel the same way maybe 1 other member will start to think the right way about others and not just themselves. The corporate scale of wrong doing is just so massive that it should be on the top of the list of things to change. Google generated earnings from the UK of $18 billion between 2006 and 2011.During this same time period, Google paid the UK Government $16 million in corporation tax.Do the maths on that. Amazon use the same complicated tax systems, which are legal but are just not right.

Amazon Art , by Agent Provocateur on Aug 18, 2013 13:01:43 GMT 1, Didn't know the Saatchi gallery did the same thing online as well... artists register and control their own mini-mart where they can upload and manage the work they want to show.
www.saatchionline.com
Tried to read through the T&Cs but gave up.

Amazon Art , by johnnyh on Aug 20, 2013 0:01:08 GMT 1, . Saw just the other day that they had changed the law to make hogging the middle lane or tail gating illegal. Yet since the news coverage told the public about the tax these companies pay outrage from the public and the MPs including the Pm. Not one tax law to my knowledge has been changed.
ps I do not use amazo or eBay (although I have done), Starbucks so not defending their product or concept.
