New book out now - "The Street Art World", by Agent Provocateur on Aug 18, 2014 18:24:38 GMT 1, Peter... surprisingly I managed to read the whole thing, as you said the first chapter was the most academic, but then it got easier! I'm definitely not going to try and be all knowledgeable and critique anything... at least 'til I've read it again.
But it's safe to say you raise some very pertinent points, and your use of quotes from the forums (incl. this one) to quantify qualify highlight the points were very interesting (there was quite a bit of chuckling at some of them... and relief that I managed not to post on the threads used!).
I can't remember the phrase you used to describe the people in 'the street art world', where you explain about a hierarchy based on time within the community and perceived knowledge and expertise, but it's made me read posts in a different light now.
And the ending gave me hope...

Thank you so much for this comment. It is great to get feedback on the book, and I am of course very glad to hear that you enjoyed/got something out of the read.
Judging by the discussion about scamming over the last few days, the point about the hierarchy based on time spent within the community seems to be more topical than ever.

New book out now - "The Street Art World", by Deleted on Sept 24, 2014 11:45:00 GMT 1, Looks like a labour of love, and an interesting read, although my tendancy to go for books with more pictures than words might mean it may take me some time to decipher... especially with phrases like 'empirical considerations' and 'a methodological travalogue'! Joking apart, I'll definitely buy it when I get some spare rubbles, as I haven't read anything academic/serious on the subject of street art. Yes, the first chapter is by necessity quite academic. It is important to note, however, that the book - while serious about its topic - has been very consciously written with a non-academic audience in mind. whats an academic?

New book out now - "The Street Art World", by Deleted on Sept 24, 2014 11:51:05 GMT 1, Street art has been part of popular culture for dรฉcades.
It's only because of technology and the internet and eBay and flippers and hedge funds and greedy fat bastard dealers and galleries who sell to rich clients that they jumped on this art form to make fast bucks.
The sanctioned so called street art on walls is just murals given the trendy name of urban or street art.
If anything the late 60's and 70's custom car and hot rod scene in the UK and Sweden and USA etc where people put art on vehicles was an early form of street art and now instead of vehicles, walls are being muralled and custom painted.
It's always existed and technology has just made it trendy.

New book out now - "The Street Art World", by Peter Bengtsen on Oct 4, 2014 11:46:39 GMT 1,
I usually only post my own photos on my Instagram stream, but this is a repost of an image by fellow art historian Gustav Thoresson.
The photo was taken at yesterday's opening of Sam3's show Monumental at Wunderkammern Gallery in Rome, Italy. It depicts a critical essay I wrote about the Spanish artist's work.

Good timing, currently a hot debate on the other "forum" regarding the Street Art & Public Art issue that the "Open Source" event in Philly is setting out. I posted it over there, cheers.

New book out now - "The Street Art World", by Peter Bengtsen on Nov 24, 2014 12:54:27 GMT 1, I am currently sketching out a new research project. For this purpose, I would very much like to get in touch with the owner of these Bast paintings:
The owner used to be a member here, but is no longer active under their old username.
If you are the owner of these (or similar parts of the 2011 Faile/Bast NYC aluminum door) or if you know how I can get in touch with the owner, please contact me by PM or by writing an email to peter.bengtsen@kultur.lu.se.
Complete anonymity assured.

Yep, those are mine and yes they came from the Williamsburg door. I thought I deleted those pics from my photobucket ages ago. They were replacedon the wall by a trio of Skullphones, and no they are not for sale

New book out now - "The Street Art World", by Peter Bengtsen on Dec 5, 2014 10:41:32 GMT 1, Two new reviews of The Street Art World have been published recently.
The first can be found on the blog Urban ArtWorks. I was happy to see the reviewer's comment that he has taken on board "the concept of The street art world, which [he] already [has] (quite intuitively) assimilated into [his] own vocabulary".
Image taken from review on Urban ArtWorks
The second review was published in Journal of Art History. It was written by historian Joe Austin, the author of the excellent 2001 book Taking the train. How Graffiti Art Became an Urban Crisis in New York City.
Austin begins his review by observing that The Street Art World "offers us an interesting, detailed, and accessible mapping of street artโs multidimensional terrain, and simultaneously lays out an important agenda for future debates". He ends by recommending the book "with confidence to all who are critically interested in the contemporary possibilities for art and collective urban life".
Sadly this review is not open access, but the first page can be previewed for free here.

You / the book deserve it. It's a great read even though I don't completely share all presumptions and/or conclusions. I read it during our summer holiday. I know it comes late but here's the proof.

A very interesting angle both on the topic and the ethnographic approach of the analysis.
