Art on a Postcard | Hepatitis C Trust | Charity Auction, by Deleted on Nov 13, 2014 22:45:48 GMT 1, Regardless of being a charitable organisation, and clearly a victim of there own success they really shouldn't just extend the time without letting bidders know in advance.
Bad form, even from a charity IMO.

Art on a Postcard | Hepatitis C Trust | Charity Auction, by jusdeep on Nov 13, 2014 23:23:23 GMT 1, I know it's a charity, but rules are rules. Although my computer was running like a dog I still managed to spread by bids and get the high bids on a few cards in time for the finish. What you get at that point is what you get, the luck of the draw. I missed out on a few I wanted but was happy with what I ended up with.

The only way they will be able to get out of this with any credibility is to honour the bids that were in on the original deadline and put it down to experience. They may lose a few quid but will have to put that down to their naivety, this time.

Its not like ebay where you put in the max bid ... I had some 'mike' guy in my sights to blow him out of the water ...

They should still honour the winning bids at 9:30pmโฆ as it still states this end time on the home page and FB page IMO.
Shouldn't have just let the time run out, we all know sites like this struggle with the traffic.

Art on a Postcard | Hepatitis C Trust | Charity Auction, by Coach on Nov 14, 2014 0:09:07 GMT 1, Ok, I'm going to make myself unpopular here, judging by the comments above. But c'mon people! It's a charity auction. In my mind, that means good people doing a good thing, for the benefit of people who need it. And so a few people may have to bid a bit more for a piece of paper. It's still some good people doing a good thing. Is there any reason to disbelieve their explanation? Site crashed, new end date set. Unpopular opinion? I suspect so - sorry.

No one is disputing the good work they are doing, to me it's a case of standing by your word.
I never pull my ebay auctions for the same reason.

Art on a Postcard | Hepatitis C Trust | Charity Auction, by hackenbush on Nov 14, 2014 0:34:41 GMT 1, The good people doing good things are the artists that donated their work. The charity is getting a lot of money for little effort. At the end of the day people are not made of money and the whole point of it being anonymous is the chance of getting nice piece of art at a hopefully bargain price. There are no losers. By extending the deadline it is making a mockery of the whole thing. Charity or no charity.

At the end of the day people are not made of money and the whole point of it being anonymous is the chance of getting nice piece of art at a hopefully bargain price. There are no losers. By extending the deadline it is making a mockery of the whole thing. Charity or no charity. I would hardly say the Charity are getting a lot of money for little effort, that's very harsh. Saskia and Gemma, not to mention all the behind the scenes people at the trust have put in a huge effort and sacrifised a lot of their own time for this event, a lot more time than a couple of cards take. Most people at the trust are volunteers or sufferers themselves. This as with any event for charity is not about 'bagging a bargain' as you put it, it's about raising money and awareness for a worthwhile organisation that is very underfunded. Stay on track newbie!
On reflection, I know the charity were under pressure and probably made what they thought was a fair decission when the server went down. But as far as I experienced it wasn't down for long and they could have stuck with their original decission of 30 minutes extra instead of extending for 20 plus hours. Obviously they are going to raise more money this way, which is the important thing, but the same thing could happen again later today. They were fully aware that the servers were going to be tested - I think the maximum the site had hosted previously was around 30 lots. Anyway I'm sure more people will get the chance to bid now, hopefully I'll still manage to get a few cards. Let's see how it all pans out today.

Art on a Postcard | Hepatitis C Trust | Charity Auction, by johnnyh on Nov 14, 2014 8:18:32 GMT 1, Good points jusdeep. Easy to see why and how they made the decision amongst all the chaos of the server crashing and wanting to raise the max amount Likewise easy to see why people are a bit pissed. In many ways the charity in the cold light of day probably made a bad decision but I think it is what it is and no one should get over wrought on them as it is for a good cause. Pretty sure they will put the additional funds to good use. You never know it may help someone you know in the future.
The worst thing that can happen is you get out bid...you only miss out on a small card piece
....rumour has it the Supposed Harland Miller at ยฃ7.8k is actually Martin Whatson he just hasn't tagged it yet.
So would not worry too much unless you bid 7.8 of course

Art on a Postcard | Hepatitis C Trust | Charity Auction, by skendo1 on Nov 14, 2014 8:18:34 GMT 1, Many thanks to Agent Provocateur for posting about the charity auction.
Also, thanks to maroom and dashboll for introducing me to two new artists whose work really caught my eye.
Learning about new artists and different venues is one of my favorite things about the message board and I'm quite appreciative.

Art on a Postcard | Hepatitis C Trust | Charity Auction, by Dungle on Nov 14, 2014 9:47:01 GMT 1, We're sorry about the trouble you had with the bidding in the closing minutes of the auction. Unfortunately, due to a massive surge driven by high levels of interest in the art postcards the website slowed to a level that made it impossible for too many people to bid.
We've raised an astonishing ยฃ37,000, so please do continue to support us today daytime until the auction closes at 17:00 Friday 14th November.
We'll be in touch again in the morning and sorry again for any inconvenience.
Kind regards,
Your Hepatitis C Trust and Giving Live Team

Just caught up with what happened last night. Shame the servers couldn't take the strain of so many people wanting to bid. I have to say though if you set a finish date you stand by it. Regardless of the charity aspect some people were willing to spend a fare amount of their money for a piece they most desire, for the organisers just re-setting a finish date because of their hardware/software couldn't handle it. I would be pretty annoyed if I thought my bid was successful only to find out the auction was going on for another 20 odd hours. What happens if the same thing occurs today I wonder, are they going to give it another 20 hours! Saying all that I genuinely hope the Hepatitis C Trust does really well out of this auction and hope there'll be many more. I've followed this with great interest, just wish I could afford one of those Hirst sketches.

Anyway I'm sure more people will get the chance to bid now, hopefully I'll still manage to get a few cards. Let's see how it all pans out today. You seem to know the people involved and the effort they have put in so I take what I said back. Believe me, I know how much charities rely on the good will of people both for donations and help. Up to now they have earned ยฃ37,000 so it is a lot of money. There are different types of charity auctions, the type were people are well off and will pay over the odds to buy things they may not necessarily want. There are also auctions like this one which rely on the generosity of people who donate things to be auctioned and the people, who may not have the spare cash to spare but want to help the charity, and at the same time buy a piece of art that they would really like. Although a lot of people, myself included, will know who a lot of these artists are because they have been collecting for a long time. Not as you seem to think are 'newbies' While people still want to help a good cause they still hope to 'bag a bargain' as well as buying something good from an artist that they are not familiar with, which surely is the whole point of the auction and them not releasing the names of the artists involved.
The issue actually is the extension of the deadline, which I agree with you, would have been better being extended by 30 minutes and not 20 hours. As far as I can tell there haven't been many bids since 21.30 which would suggest that people will be waiting until just before 5 pm to do the same thing but I suspect, with less enthusiasm.

Art on a Postcard | Hepatitis C Trust | Charity Auction, by T-Bro on Nov 14, 2014 10:15:42 GMT 1, Some big name artists and an opportunity to get a bargain = major load at close of auction.
Its not rocket science to set up a CDN or load balancer or something similar to handle the load - their "web People" as they put it should have sorted this.
Moving the goalposts is in poor form. Once bitten and all that

Art on a Postcard | Hepatitis C Trust | Charity Auction, by Dice on Nov 14, 2014 10:51:29 GMT 1, In this day and age where megaterabytes are cheaper than ever and tech people are more savvy than ever I really don't understand why no art websites can manage to prevent server overload at crunch time. It can't be that difficult can it? Anyway I totally missed the deadline last night anyway so at least I get to bid today
