Art Print Storage in Plan Chests, by Aza on Apr 16, 2016 14:53:36 GMT 1, Thanks for the info met
I didn't want to use tissue paper as it is a bit too 'floaty' for my needs. I would like to store prints in between the sheets, but also have them easily accessible, which is why I was thinking of glassine paper. Your suggestion of papers from Shepherds sound like they will do the job. Cheers

(i) plan to access / handle your prints on a regular basis; and (ii) have the budget for it,
I would recommend acid-free, clear polyester pockets.
Secol produces them in large format (e.g. 77.5 x 102.5 cm or 85.7 x 120.7 cm). The company also has bespoke service offering any other size of archival pocket you require.

Art Print Storage in Plan Chests, by Aza on Apr 16, 2016 15:36:01 GMT 1, Yeah I need to have a think about this. I don't plan on handling them as such, but just keeping them viewable. I currently have a portfolio, so that is not something I wish to use. I would prefer to keep them in this plan chest, but easy to view. Maybe keeping them in sleeves will be the way forward, now I've just spent ยฃ25 on Kraft paper

Secol produces them in large format (e.g. 77.5 x 102.5 cm or 85.7 x 120.7 cm). The company also has bespoke service offering any other size of archival pocket you require. From my experience, these are good if you don't plan on handling the prints regularly. As inserting and removing them can sometimes be a fiddle, risking bending, creasing or causing dings on large formats. All fair points, making me realise I failed to express myself clearly and fully.
By handling prints "on a regular basis", I meant handling them only after insertion in the clear polyester pockets.
Separately, the 100-micron thickness of the polyester is too thin for picking up large-size pockets in a careless manner. Unless held by their opposite far ends, the pockets risk flopping over and creasing the prints inside.
For this reason, I use archival stiffeners in the pockets. They are slightly smaller than the pockets themselves. Secol can make them according to customer specifications: material, thickness and measurements. The stiffeners allow for much rougher handling when moving the pockets around.
Inserting prints into the pockets or removing them becomes far simpler as well, because the prints can be slid in or out on top of the stiffener. The stiffener โ not the print โ takes the brunt of any resistance from the pocket during this process, thereby minimising any risk of damage. Each pocket can then also hold two prints: one on either side of the stiffener, its secondary role being that of a divider.

Art Print Storage in Plan Chests, by met on Apr 16, 2016 21:45:09 GMT 1, It's down to your personal preferences and needs.
The Trantec sleeves in large format are convenient for the ease with which prints can be inserted and removed. At 250 microns, they're substantial in thickness and weight.
My own choice, however, was for pockets โ which are welded on three sides. They offer slightly more protection from atmospheric dust and humidity. They also create a tighter overall vacuum seal, meaning there's likely to be less shifting and slippage of the prints if the pockets holding them are moved around.
I've found the telephone receptionist at Secol very helpful. It may be worthwhile having a chat with her about your specific requirements. Secol were happy to send me a complimentary sample of a Trantec sleeve (one of the smaller and thinner 50-micron sleeves) so that I could see how the flap lock worked in person.
If, in addition to storage, you're likely to be displaying or presenting work to be kept in sleeves, consider also Selwyns.

I ordered a batch of the 32x42 the quality is excellent and the centre board makes sliding the prints in an out relatively painless. They arrived in a really strong box which I still store them in.

Art Print Storage in Plan Chests, by agu on Apr 18, 2016 8:36:42 GMT 1, I modified an old desk to include a flat-file drawer, with a decorative piece on the top with glow-in-the-dark resin. Before: After: Art drawer: Desktop: Desktop glow: Uber impressed. This is "da bomb". Love the 2 tone surface and the glow in the dark is a nice touch. Storing art in side a piece of art. Gotta love it.

Art Print Storage in Plan Chests, by agu on Apr 18, 2016 8:37:56 GMT 1, Interesting thread. Also looking for an old leather chair for reading @coach Would love a plans chest but not enough room to keep one. Has anyone used a low (3 or 4 drawer) one as a coffee table? Or risky the kids spill something and it drips down / in the drawers? The only space I have for one is as a coffee table. I'll get round to getting one at some point I would not sleep at night...

That also put me off getting one as a 'coffee table'.....spilling anything and also drawers just getting opened and prints taken out all over floor!! God, the nightmares I have!

Art Print Storage in Plan Chests, by agu on Apr 18, 2016 10:08:48 GMT 1, This is a fascinating thread. In all honesty I have only ever bought art to hang on walls, which puts some kind of brake on my buying behaviour. So some questions to the owners of these beautiful chests.
1) How many prints/pieces do you own? 2) How do you "enjoy" the art. Is knowing you own it enough or do you take them out to admire them from time to time.

Art Print Storage in Plan Chests, by Aza on Apr 18, 2016 10:12:55 GMT 1, I don't generally store art, so I also don't bother buying stuff if it won't go straight into a frame.
With this plan chest I'd hope to be able to easily and safely view the prints. So far the selwyn sleeves seem the best option.

Art Print Storage in Plan Chests, by Cutkillavince on May 2, 2016 6:18:11 GMT 1, After reading this post few weeks ago, I decided to buy a plan chest as well. I found a second-hand one on the local Dutch "ebay" and got it last week. It's a huge one (72 x 136 x 95cms - 189Kgs, 10 drawers) and I have to say, it looks nice and is very handy to store prints. Next step is to have all the prints framed

The flat file I purchased for $250 and the top cost me $200, hardware maybe 20$? so all in total like 470-500$. Fits 24x36" prints too which is great.

Art Print Storage in Plan Chests, by bejwee77 on May 4, 2016 21:14:09 GMT 1, Thanks! Ddog WILLYBKLN
Honestly I've never done much of anything like this before, and I fumbled through this one. Wanted a file folder, had a few ideas, found a cheap desk on craigslist, cobbled it together. The pictures make the whole process look much cleaner (and probably quicker) than it actually was - that's the real work of art!

Art Print Storage in Plan Chests, by kaotek on Jun 29, 2016 16:10:35 GMT 1, After purchasing a standard flat file cabinet I realized it looked more office than street, so I took it to a local shop and had them make some changes. They removed the powder coat finish, welded on some heavy duty wheels, and gave it a new life.

Art Print Storage in Plan Chests, by johntyyk3 on Feb 11, 2017 17:19:19 GMT 1, Hello everyone.
Firstly, forgive my ignorance.
I'm pretty new to collecting pieces, across the board from street art to movie prints. Passions lay in screenprint, stencil and letterpress.
My reason for starting this thread is that I am struggling at the minute to find a storage solution that can fit and work for the variances of print sizes that I am acquiring.
Based in the U.K., I really would like flat file approach (currently prints reside in tubes which I know is the worst!)
If anyone can point me in the direction of great storage solutions and methods it would be fantastic. I would love to have them all framed but that's not an option for me personally at the minute.
Prints range in sizes - up to just below A0.
Appreciate anytime or comments on this, Look forward to hearing for you guys! Thanks, Chris

Art Print Storage in Plan Chests, by Aza on Feb 11, 2017 17:25:12 GMT 1, Selwyn sleeves are probably the best, although can end up being very expensive. Cheaper route is just a decent art portfolio, just make sure you go for mylar sleeves to protect the art works. A0 will be difficult though, unless you have a lot of space to store. Under the bed is a good spot

Hi Daniel,
Yeah I was thinking an A0 plan chest like an architects sort of chest... but space is at a bit of a premimum in my current location.
That's what I would love at some point though!
Thanks, Chris

Hey Aza,
Thanks for that recommendation! I have to admit I haven't heard of them so will look them up.
Do you have any ideas of art portfolios that would work? I like the idea of being able to clip sleeves into a folder (portfolio) for quick viewing.
Thanks, Chris

Plan B could be 2 sheets of mdf or uncut mount card stuck together on one edge with Mylar sleeves for the prints in between. Tubes are not a good idea long term get them out asap
