U2 collaborate with Urban Artists , by Deleted on Nov 19, 2014 18:39:13 GMT 1, Never really understood all the hate for U2. One of the few bands who have supported and championed workers rights, amnesty, make poverty history, Greenpeace, Mencap etc etc. And did it right off the bat. It's amazing what the steady drip of a right wing press can do to undermine socialist principles. Bono's idealistic activism should be applauded and emulated by everyone with the type of platform they have. Hmmm. I take on the point about the RW press, to a degree and the underlying fact that Bonio is mouthy doesnt help - I disagree however about his socialist principles- would a socialist ( or indeed a devout christian ) set up offshore tax vehicles to ring fence his money or work hand in hand with the Likes of Apple over the years ? ( Not going to go onto Apple, as its all out there with a quick google) He is an easy target that said. I would suggest that Bonio is smart enought to realise the value of PR either way, but have you seen the state of his charity finances- $20M in, 187K out - the rest on salaries and office admin. $20M in and 187k out ? serious, where is that listed ? that's insane, on a par with BNE averages

Thats why I don't give to these type of charities.
Geldofs ebola single is heavily plugged but the Chinese ahve given millions and sent doctors to Africa and USA promised a billion dollars.
Geldof knows plenty of rich people and celebs who between them could easily pay for a thousand small hospitals to be built quickly in Africa.

U2 collaborate with Urban Artists , by Schrรถdinger's Chat on Nov 19, 2014 22:28:50 GMT 1, I heard that U2 are re-recording their back catalogue without the lead guitar.
Critics are concerned it may lose its Edge.
Sorry-I'll get my coat

U2 collaborate with Urban Artists , by porkus on Nov 19, 2014 22:36:49 GMT 1, Something I read in Viz went something like "Lots of people complaining about that โpop starโ Bonio making himself available for the new Live Aid single. Fair enough heโs a complete f***tard with a high opinion of himself and a bit of a shortarse, but be fair, give the man a break.

um
Now theres the rub - yes, these people could sort out hospitals, but it wont fix much in the big scheme of things. China are involved in Africa for one reason only - expliotation of rescources- China are the new colonial power in the continent - different masters, same shite. We demand shiny pre planned obselescent electronics, China extracts the rare earths from Africa to do that. Apple by the way has $140 Bn in cash slopping about in its bank accounts.
Africa may get a few more roads ( usually to get the minerals to port) but still loses.Cuba has sent hundreds of medical workers, but this sorta falls under the radar as its not trumpted for PR as happens with western govermental efforts.
As much as the live aid situation has its detractors and supporters, it cannot get to the root of the problem, a temporary localised sticking plaster. Its (in)tangible benefit is raising awareness if you strip out the PR for the various incumbents/ participants.Ebola is an an issue, but in terms of true economic impact, it is insignificant when compared to the fallout from HIV/ Malaria/ Corrpution/Catholic church etc in the continent.
and short of a global revolution of some kind, I dont see things getting any better very soon
sorry for the divert. I may be unemployed at the minute, but I still think of things in economic terms. meh

U2 collaborate with Urban Artists , by Deleted on Nov 20, 2014 0:06:39 GMT 1, Sometimes celebrities hijack causes or issues and distract people from looking in the right direction. I detest bono ( more for the turgid stadium rock they ejaculate than anything else TBF ) but I do believe he thinks he is doing good on the whole. Problem is, he has been co-opted by the G8/G20 / Bildeberg/ WEF boys to be wheeled out on a regular basis, which doesnt do his credability any good in the eyes of critics - I think he has been outsmarted here but hangs in there, still beleiving he can sort it out.

U2 collaborate with Urban Artists , by sin on Nov 20, 2014 1:32:43 GMT 1, I liked that this thread started of negative with an argument for the positive vs the other away around.
It's pretty hard not to give U2 some tip of the hat for their work up to achtung baby. Pretty solid catalog. After that, compete shit. I've seen them live a few times and its a hell of a production. Their current work and their individual talent is getting pretty week.
Personally, I could care less about celebrity politics. It's easy to champion efforts when you can't remeber the last time you had to think about the reality of money.
All that said, I think its cool that a group of artists are working on something, i hope they do great work and it turns out good for everyone.

U2 collaborate with Urban Artists , by agameof2 on Nov 20, 2014 17:55:44 GMT 1, I was thinking about this the other day and while U2 were a relevant band with options and causes. They just aren't anymore. While once they got stuck in and named and shamed politicians etc - calling the president of france an asshole for bombing of Greenpeace ship etc Over the the past 15 years they rarely have an option. They have never critized any of recent wars in the middle east or even supported Obama in his election run. They have become insiders and just don't achieve alot. And ultimately people feel they can't trust them anymore.
The new streetart film is a good example of how tame U2 and streetart has gotten. No real danger here. Very safe. But more importantly these artists are a multinational spread
Oliver Jeffers - Nth Ireland Robin Rhode - South Africa DFace - UK Mode 2 - UK Chloe Early - UK & Ireland Ganzeer - Egypt Vhils - Poland Maser - Irl ROA - Belguim DALeast - China Todd James -US
Most will get U2 that extra bit of local hype in each area. They're smart. U2 always get paid

U2 collaborate with Urban Artists , by nrgball on Nov 22, 2014 5:30:23 GMT 1, Of the videos I saw, Daleast, ROA and Cloe Early crushed it.
ROA told has a fascinating commentary of life on this planet. I've never seen him draw like that. Very well produced and executed. He really took my thought process to a contemplative state.
Chloe told a beautiful story with great imagery. Her ability to blend the terrain, her perspective and art way transcendent.
Dal delivered a masterpiece. He was patient and creative, imaginative and revealing. The work shows his range as an artist while offering insight into his character as well as his perspective. The film was tight. I hope he produces more film in the future.
The venue was exactly what you thought NYC has the potential of offering. Hidden, storied, stunning and chill. It was an honor to be included.
The films are well worth the few bucks it will cost to download inspite of the bashing of thread.. Though I'm sure you will find it for free shortly after the release.

U2 collaborate with Urban Artists , by Deleted on Nov 22, 2014 9:12:18 GMT 1, Can't stand U2's music post The Joshua Tree. It was Achtung Baby which (imo) marked particularly Bono's descent into a level of patronising behavior where there is no mitigant. That he's got the audacity to deliver sermons around what is effectively wealth sharing whilst allegedly sheltering his in breath taking.....
Any association with Bono is cringe worthy, yuk.

Bit of a tough one really but I'm sort of with the not very keen crowd. would be nice to see him lead a very simple life as I imagine he lives the very opposite. Practice what you preach springs to mind which I feel quite strongly about.

U2 collaborate with Urban Artists , by Artie Reyt on Nov 22, 2014 12:21:36 GMT 1, If you are interested in finding out why Bono and U2 are so compromised when it comes to preaching about what's wrong with the world, you might want to take a look at Harry Browne's book:
www.versobooks.com/books/1419-the-frontman
Extremely well researched and persuasively argued. The key point that stuck for me was how the Western ideas about how the 'developing world' should develop essentially amounts to toeing the line according to the WTO: i.e., liberalise your markets, allow global corporations in to invest - precisely the same system that has seen Africa ripped off for its natural resources and disastrously polluted in the process in the past 60 years.
There are also some eye-openers about U2's income - their concerts between 2009-2011 netted them $736,137,344. In the light of those kinds of figures, there does seem to me to be something regrettable about figures from urban art taking the U2 shilling when the latter is getting just as much out of it in the form of kudos/credibility than the former are in terms of 'career-enhancing' publicity. It doesn't seem to fit very comfortably.
