What A Difference A Decade Makes , by trax51 on Jan 14, 2015 12:52:22 GMT 1, if this wasnt Banksy & worth ££££ now, would you actually have paid money for this ? struggling here, throw me a bone someome ? Actually, did anyone on here buy one of these at the time? If I was one of these people, I would probably be drinking Mojitos on my private Bali island, bought in 2008 with the proceed of one canvas sale....

Yes, but who's to say you wouldn't have sold when they hit £5k or £10k or £25k? I probably would have to be honest!

I actually really love the image. That said I would argue that the pleasure that someone gets from a piece of art can be heightened by the complete body of work that represents that artist. IMO the experience is not just about one single image for artists who have a large body of work and associated impact in the art world.
A Basquiat is a Basquiat, even an inferior one. Impossible not to enjoy at some level.
but at the time, the mythology of Bnashy had not really started, it certainly had not gone mainstream. faced with a choice of canvas that makes no sense to me ( and if anyone wants to tell me what it is all about, please do) or a handful of cheeky prints I could get framed up to fill the walls of a big house we had just bought, it was sorta a no brainer. I bought initiually cos I liked , not for any kind of reverence/ fetishment of Bnashky
as is my mantra, buy what you like, not what you think will rise in value. if I had gone for the canvas, I would surely have dumped it when they were going for a grand or so. Whereas I still have some of the prints

noun (especially in former times) a person who makes a living by travelling from place to place mending pans and other metal utensils.

A agree about pieces representing a body of work, which has obviously increased exponentially over time for Banksy. But, for me I think Basquiat's pieces in contrast represent him, where he came from, who he kept company with and ultimately his demise, but usually not the work its self.
