Richard Hamilton : , by fattyramone on Jan 14, 2015 1:38:12 GMT 1, Anyone here remember the BBC show QED back in 1992 when they did a major retrospective of Richard Hamilton and his iconic pop-art Collage "Just what is it that makes todayโs homes so different?
then, invited the audience to write in and apply for one of the 5000 edition of the modern updated version of it.
The new version was laser printed using the Quantel desktop paintbox (all new technology then and certainly new to Richard) and hand signed and numbered.
I decided to write off to the BBC on a whim and a few weeks later got one through my letterbox which I promptly put away in a "safe place" and lost for many years only for it to unexpectedly resurface about 10 years ago. After which I then made sure I put it away in a proper "safe place" again and haven't seen it since!!.....I know it's here somewhere , but God only knows where!
Anybody else remember this show? ...or better still did anyone else ever apply and get one?

Richard Hamilton : , by fattyramone on Jan 14, 2015 9:04:05 GMT 1, I'm glad some-one else remembers this.
Those were different times then , can you imagine the uproar nowadays if the BBC picked up the tab for the printing of 5000 laser prints , 5000 card backed envelopes and 5000 x postage costs.
I wish I could find the bloody thing again

Richard Hamilton : , by jusdeep on Jan 14, 2015 9:27:41 GMT 1, I remember this also, although never engaged with the print. Always loved the original and remember seeing it at a massive Pop art retrospective at, possibly Tate Britain or RA, late 80's/early 90's and being a little disappointed of how small it was. Looks like there's a retrospective coming up at Tate Modern soon also: www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-modern/exhibition/richard-hamilton

I had been looking forward to it, with my pen at the ready to make a note of the address and details so I could write off to get a piece. It was so exciting, in a time before, well, everything we take for granted now. Anyway, 5 minutes before the end there was a loud noise of someone trying to start a car with a broken car exhaust outside my place. My car had a broken exhaust. Someone was trying to steal my car! So, I exited the flat with some haste, reached the car before it had departed, caught the kid, gave him a couple of slaps and when I went back in. The programme had ended. I didn't get the address and missed out on the piece. Gutted about it, and it has always stuck in my craw, so if anyone has one for sale, drop me a line, eh?

Richard Hamilton : , by fattyramone on Jan 14, 2015 16:19:34 GMT 1, Without being able to say for sure , I'm pretty certain the main reason I would have been watching it would have been his Beatles connection , with him having designed the minimalist "White Album" and me going through my beatles-with-everything stage.
Unlike others who have replied on this thread I don't remember (?) having any idea that there was going to be a chance to grab a free print at the end of the programme and must have just scribbled down the BBC address as the end credits rolled and forgotten about until it suddenly arrived through the post , so maybe like you it was (subconsciously) the beginning of my love of pop art too ...without me even realising it was happening?
