Art collection as a % of house value, by kimble on Jan 15, 2015 16:15:12 GMT 1, If being paranoid is openly posting that my art collection is worth 200k...then yes as it is SO easy to trace someone's ID...dooooohhhh What's my exact address? Besides it's a percentage, which doesn't say anything about the value of the home or the collection therein.
Anyone can view the forum, find someone in london (average home ยฃ500k) art ratio say 10% so possibly 50k worth of easily removable goods. Wait for them to sell something and get their address.
A number of threads about people being robbed on the forum and I doubt everyone that gets robbed from posting too much info comes back on here to talk about the experience. Maybe overly paranoid but there is a risk.
Quick update for you all on my stolen print. Basically the Poilce did have a suspect, but sadly could not place them to the crime, and yes they've been to my house and are on this forum and will be even reading this, beware folks.

Art collection as a % of house value, by ABC on Jan 15, 2015 17:18:20 GMT 1, Why would you openly promote how much your collection is worth, even if itโs a percentage? Firstly in my opinion itโs a little crass, itโs a bit like the guy at the bar in his red chinos and cravat nudging his keys around to his Ferrari for all to see. Having spent a number of years working in the Cyber world, I could assure you that with just a few clicks and you can find a great deal about a person, where they live, work, eat and what they drive etc. etc. So yes, people should be cautious, as oppose to paranoid about what they post.

Art collection as a % of house value, by Deleted on Jan 15, 2015 19:34:00 GMT 1, If you add up the approximate value of your art collection, what is it as a percentage of the value of your home? I think it's crude and inappropriate to say "My house is worth X and my art collection is worth Y" and therefore I'd like to keep it to percentages if anyone is interested in contributing to the thread. I'm wondering what constitutes a 'normal' ratio. Mine comes to ~6.1%. mines .00001 percent, but my collections only worth 7 figures

Art collection as a % of house value, by Oski on Jan 15, 2015 19:36:59 GMT 1, I think this is just innocent fun. It's interesting to gauge the amount one allocates resources to our collective passion for art relative to our basic need for shelter. It's fairly abstract, as people are talking percentages (with the actual value of their homes as being a big unknown).
This is no worse than the "Show Me Your Latest..." or "Show Me Your Pimped Out Pad". Heck even in the FS forum, one outright declares to everyone what they have and it's right there in black and white what it's worth. What's the point of discussing any art in such a visible public arena if one is afraid of being too ostentatious or fear theft.
While advice of caution is certainly warranted and appreciated. Participation here is voluntary and based on what one is inclined to share. I'm personally abstaining, but let people have some fun!

Which is exactly what I meant when I said weird thread! Attention seeking look how much I'm worth. My interpretation of this thread is somewhat to the contrary. I read it as an insight into how much we metaphorically 'overstretch' ourselves, in order to carry on this art addiction, that in some circumstances, can be to our detriment.
There is quite a debate in the art World, not only from artists; also society at large, about how much we 'consume' in this modern era.
Some important questions and answers could be determined if we had some proper analysis, for example: Is there a safe percentage that one should keep below? (akin to how much one is allowed to borrow as a mortgage to the amount one earns.)
Unfortunately, the amount most of us spend on art is, by any definition, quite crass when we think about the genuine inequities in this World...
If the artists we are buying from are producing art critiquing 'consumption', it makes perfect sense to discuss that here...
Seems a bit ridiculous that the same members on here that post in the "Latest Buy" section, then don't want to post on this thread for fear of being robbed! Seems a bit contradictory don't you think?

I would like to acknowledge your perspective and I know where you are coming from Dungle - recently there have been lots of silly discussion over prices and hyping - more so than usual - so understand that you are sick of it.
I do really think that a discussion regarding "art addiction" would be an interesting one - of which this thread is a light-hearted precursor.

Art collection as a % of house value, by I like pictures on Jan 15, 2015 23:03:06 GMT 1, don't really get the thread, over stretching blah blah blah. I have art that I like on my walls couldn't put a value on it or my house as I don't know what current market values are. I buy it because I like it not so I can claim to have a collection worth a % of the value of my home.

Theyre fun facts only, and the percentage really isnt relevant to any REAL information.
A better question for me to know is how long folks have been collecting, and where their collections started, in relevance to where it is today? much better line of info.
