Shepard Fairey Details How to Start an Art Collection, by davievegas on May 19, 2015 22:36:40 GMT 1, Amazing read!!!! I found this part quiet interesting.
www.highsnobiety.com/2015/05/19/shepard-fairey-art-collection/
What would you consider a โred flagโ when making a purchase?
"When an artist is raising their prices very, very quickly โ even if their work is strong. Like I said in the beginning, I think that if you like it and you donโt mind parting with that amount of money to get it, then โno regretsโฆโ But, sometimes I think a gallery has gotten into someoneโs ear, or theyโve had a little bit of press attention and theyโre maybe growing with their prices in a way that is not necessarily going to be legitimized over time. Frequently when that happens, I say, โoh, well, I can either wait and see if things settle and if this person actually puts their prices back in a more moderate place or maybe they really are going to become somebody on the rise [and they] are headed for a bluechip career and even though knowing what their work was just a year or two ago I was foolish not to acquire work then. If somebodyโs prices are jumping up too quickly it could be a temporary bubble, so thatโs a red flag. Thatโs a warning sign to proceed with caution."
For discussion purposes who can name artists that are doing this right now? Raising prices very fast? Maya Hayuk comes to mind for me because everyone is talking about her new soon release being way higher then normal. Thoughts???

As I understand it, it was Maya's choice to raise the price on her latest edition, pricing it at what will likely be market value to combat the flipping. If people are selling her other works at those prices, why shouldn't she sell them and enjoy the profits of her hard work?

Shepard Fairey Details How to Start an Art Collection, by davievegas on May 20, 2015 1:36:42 GMT 1, I understand sticking up for her and her work because you own it. Like I stated, this was for discussion purposes in response to the article and people's feedback to her prices being raised. Personally, I dont own MH work. Therefore, I have no response to her wanting to charge more. If she is doing it to stop flippers from buying her work as you stated then I personally can see the irony in it.
Not saying she's doing this but for discussion sake It could be a chance for her to benefit and use flippers as a possible scapegoat. Flippers wont suffer. Flippers only benefit when people want a print/release bad enough. Her hike in prices wont change anything. Flippers buy art trying to predict a financial gain and they will still make one with this release. Same amount if not more as long as people want her work. Problem I can see her running into is the fact that while trying to solve the flipper issue, she is attempting a risk/reward here.
This is a lot for a print from what others are stating and according to her value/market. What if she doesn't sell out because she scares off her current collectors with the price? Whats scarier is what if this is one of her most liked images yet? If flippers are not scared off then they have a very good day. All for good discussion of course. Not meant for anamosity.

Shepard Fairey Details How to Start an Art Collection, by Black Apple Art on May 20, 2015 4:02:15 GMT 1, Have no idea how anyone extrapolates that raising prices would help prevent people from buying to re-sell. One must conclude that the price increase some how stretches the purchase price beyond the budget of the reseller which makes zero sense. Prices are raised to bring in more income....period. The reason for the desire for more income is another issue all together.

It is up to the artist. There are pros and cons. Selling at market value does cut out the flippers. But it puts her work out of reach of many collectors. I believe that that is why Banksy continued to sell prints a few years ago for a few hundred quid knowing market value was a multiple of sale price. I appreciate that to many many people even that was too much to spend. I guess it's a question of balance, and it's up to the artist where he or she pitches it.
