Behind The Scenes Of Producing A Screen Print Edition , by European Bob on Jun 14, 2015 19:52:51 GMT 1, Hi, I hope this finds everyone well. As someone who originally began painting stencils for enjoyment and show casing them on this forum, I have gained a vast amount of support from the forum community so as a thank you I wanted to start a thread showing the production of a screen print edition coming from my personal point of view. I will document every process involved in the creation.
Choosing an image to produce into a screen print edition is extremely difficult. I myself have looked at other print releases and questioned the the image choice but I always respect the artists decision and understand that people will love images and others may not. That is the beauty of it. When deciding I followed my heart and the piece that I loved the most. I originally created my โDuck Huntโ piece in 2012 and it is an image that I keep coming back to. For me the image provokes some nostalgic emotions; playing Snes with dad and having fun. To be honest thats all I want the artwork to do. Right choice? wrong choice? I simply love it and hope you will too!
I went back to photoshop to clean up the original image, making sure all the lines where as good as they could be. Keeping as much detail as I could for the print size and separating all the layers ready for print.
The next step is printing the layers onto paper. I use an application called โPosteRazorโ to print my images to the desired size. 8 Pieces were printed in preparation for cutting.
For my stencils I use Snowdon Cartridge Paper 300gsm. I have tried several different cards and for me this is the ideal stock, it is extremely durable and also good value for money. Sticking the printed paper onto the card the cutting process begins. Cutting 8 stencils is quite tiresome but it is actually something I enjoy and theres something therapeutic about it!
I use the stencils to produce several test pieces. I like my pieces to look a bit โrough' I love the rawness of using stencils and I Iโm not a fan of everything looking so perfect. I keep important details clean but I love the roughness of the overspray compared to the crispness of the black lines creating some life and movement in the image. I'm probably the only one who thinks that but hey. I then measure everything to make sure that the piece will work on the desired paper size, and mark up background/border dimensions.
The next step is probably the most important. I prefer to hand paint everything I release myself so when making a screen print edition I want to craft as much as I can by my own hand. To do this I get some clear film.
There are several ways to transfer your image onto film. For me the most personal way is to actually paint each film. This process captures the most authentic reproduction of my work, it is the closest I will get to hand spraying each piece. Some may ask why did I not just release a hand painted edition. The answer comes back to my love for screen printing, collecting screen prints and the relationship between screen printing and stencil art. Screen printing in itself is a piece of art. The time, effort and attention to detail undertaken reflects extremely well in stencilled images adding to the overall quality of the piece. Knowing that you have created a piece of work to the highest quality is the main reason.
Once the films are hand sprayed I would go back over them them touching up or removing blemishes and making sure everything was as good as it could be.
Im fortunate enough to have worked with a talented artist and master screen printer. Knowing that they're extremely knowledgable and using the best equipment I am proud to have them working on my pieces. For me they are the best print studio and produce amazing stuff. Please check there work out if you have a minute www.hipposcreenprinters.co.uk I could not recommend them any higher!
I am taking everything to Hippo Screen Printer this week so I will update this thread as soon as I can.
I hope this may provide a glimpse inside the world of something you and I are passionate about and hopefully shows some of the work that is involved. If you have any questions or request I will do my best to answer or I can have a chat with someone that does.
Thanks for reading this far and joining my journey to create a screen print! Cheers Bob
**Disclaimer. These are my personal views, they are by no means correct. Im not a blogger so I apologise for the full essay vibe

I convert my images to PDF and use Acrobat reader to print them across multiple pages, seems to work best in my limited experience.

Behind The Scenes Of Producing A Screen Print Edition , by European Bob on Jun 18, 2015 21:33:09 GMT 1, A quick progress update after visiting the screen printing studio Paper! how many types of paper are there??? White? Off white? Cold Press? Hot Press? Fabiano? Somerset? Deckled? Straight? So many choices! I simply love the Somerset paper with a deckled edge, float mounted in a white box frame. Could there be anything nicer?
The never ending rainbow of colours! I create several colour mockups on photoshop before speaking with the screen printer to finalise colour choices but it always choosing that perfect hue thats difficult.
Making something unique is always exciting so when I was shown the Diamond Dust I just could not resist! We ordered some outrageous colours that will create some equally outrageously gorgeous pieces!
Oh and before I forget we also managed to get hold of some perspex fluorescent edge glow sheets. Mounted near a light these beauties just POW!!! Im extremely excited to see how they turn out!
The fun begins! Ill be back at the screen printing studio again to update everyone with the progress.

Behind The Scenes Of Producing A Screen Print Edition , by Fake on Jun 24, 2015 12:04:36 GMT 1, This is a great post! It is always nice to see how other artists use different techniques and most of them they discover them selfs how to do it the best way.
I especially love the way you go about the screen printing! I am not that experienced at it but this is very clever ;-) (Making the films I mean)

Behind The Scenes Of Producing A Screen Print Edition , by European Bob on Jun 24, 2015 17:11:42 GMT 1, Great thread, will be even better when I get home and can see the images!. Not sure how I missed it previously. Am going through the same trials and tribulations. I use posterazor although it's playing up on my mac. Am on the lookout for an A1 printer. Bob how do you apply the diamond dust? thanks a lot mate. With regards to the diamond dust a layer of varnish is printed and then the diamond dust is applied by hand to the wet varnish.

I don't think a lot of people like to share their processes but I only started using a tutorial from stencil revolution many moons ago so hopefully if my way of working helps anyone else I'd be extremely happy.
I find this way of producing films works extremely well, i originally used this process on my 'life is better in colour' and 'Mickey Mouse' prints and to be honest i was amazed how much of the detail was captured on the screen.

Will be interesting to see what background colour you go for. Sometimes lots of different bright coloured background cheapen a print a bit for me, always quite like just one or two colourways at most.
What about something that stays true to the packaging back in the day. Black or pastel blue?

Behind The Scenes Of Producing A Screen Print Edition , by European Bob on Jun 25, 2015 20:52:00 GMT 1, rjf76 I enjoyed painting my cartoon character pieces and will definitely be revisiting some of those pieces again!
jayTown You have read my mind and the edition background colour will be a pale blue. We tried to match the cover artwork as best we could but I wish I had the original packaging to work off. We did discuss a black but I felt it was a tad too dark so we will be doing a couple of other unique colours which may/may not work well but in my experience its always the colours you least expect that turn out to be the special ones! I can't actually wait to see the colours myself.
telsin Much appreciated!

After downloading the OSX disk image, double click to mount it if it doesn't mount automatically. You can start the contained PosteRazor application directly by double clicking it or drag it into a location of Your choice.
