Donald Trump, by mose on Aug 5, 2019 17:56:13 GMT 1, For the sake of balance that's a fair point. Guns dont make people want to kill people and we should look at what the causes are. But access to powerful guns makes it all too easy for people to kill people and that is the point The thing is, is the least powerful gun can fairly easily kill someone. Guns are made to kill, that’s their whole point. It’s asnine to single one out and believe it will fix everything. If you guys want to march down the street demanding all guns be outlawed that’s one thing. But the argument is logically flawed when it’s all to blame on one single weapon. Aren't about 75% or so of gun-related deaths associated with standard handguns?
I mean, 'assault weapons' is great for headlines. Doesn't really reflect the truth on the ground.

Donald Trump, by touchdowntodd on Aug 5, 2019 17:57:07 GMT 1, Another interesting random fact is that depending on the source or study, only 1.3-3% of prisoners committed their gun related crime with a legally purchased firearm....
And being that I attend gunshows often, I can tell u that the other 97 don't all come from there.. its vastly vets, dealers, etc..
So if we're controlling legal purchases to where even let's stretch and say only 5% of crimes are with a legally purchased firearm, how do we change how the other 95% got theirs?
Only having this end of the topic because people keep circling back to gun control and legalities.. these aren't legal guns, or even owned by the assailant most times

Donald Trump, by k2 on Aug 5, 2019 17:57:55 GMT 1, In the same way the confusing the correlation between gun availability and mass shootings as the causes of them. That’s all we’re trying to argue. For the sake of balance that's a fair point. Guns dont make people want to kill people and we should look at what the causes are. But access to powerful guns makes it all too easy for people to kill people and that is the point Yes this is a good point.
I was in a Steak-and-shake in Ohio last summer, and a guy got into an argument with the waitress about his chicken tenders (we've all been there). He left without paying, then 10 minutes later he came back in with a handgun and waved it around a bit. No shots were fired and it was never pointed near me, but it was still pretty scary.
In the UK, someone would go home and write a passive-aggressive review on TripAdvisor.
I would rather not live somewhere where it's so easy for angry / emotional / unstable people to react violently in a moment of madness.

Hence why gangsters have to stab each other.
Right so what I’m getting at is, in the UK, the lack of guns has sent criminals to knives, but it didn’t stop the attacks. Here in the US if we eliminate “assault rifles” those who want to commit an attack would switch to a hand gun, or a different rifle. Banning “assault weapons” is just a temporary feel good solution. It won’t stop attacks but people will feel safer for a little at least 🙄

This circles back to the theory of most of these kids seeing Columbine as "the example" and handguns of course being a more accurate quicker method (as much as I cringe to type that)

Donald Trump, by WOOF on Aug 5, 2019 18:04:18 GMT 1, There's a psychological problem in all levels of society right now, but the poor are told constantly that they've got no chance and nothing to live for so they don't see "risk" they see only action they want to take There's a psychological problem in all levels of society right now. And guns aren't helping.

It'll make it more difficult for them to carry out these attacks. They are very rare outside that country of lunatics that can buy guns in the supermarket.

I see what's going on, and it reminds me of this chapter from Cornel West back in, I think, 1993:http://tparent.net/West_NihilisminBlackAmerica.pdf
"Nihilism is to be understood here not as a philosophic doctrine that there are no rational grounds for legitimate standards or authority; it is, far more, the lived experience of coping with a life of horrifying meaninglessness, hopelessness, and (most important) lovelessness. The frightening result is a numbing detachment from others and a self-destructive disposition toward the world. Life without meaning, hope, and love breeds a coldhearted, mean-spirited outlook that destroys both the individual and others. "

Donald Trump, by kuni on Aug 5, 2019 18:08:37 GMT 1, Having this conversation with someone who's not willing to acknowledge the relationship between easy access to guns, specifically assault rifles, and the incidence of mass shootings if pointless. Are there other factors at play? Sure, but to totally deny and ignore the link between guns and mass shootings means that we're not even speaking the same language.
Too much internet debating for one day, I'm out. Back to debating art, at least that's subjective.

For the life of me PLEASE explain why anyone brings Trump into this.. as though any politician has ever done anything to stop this... Unless u just feel that Trump is the easy out like many do. He's not the first president with these on his watch. Then I'll just blame Chicago on Obama lol.. same argument
Stop blaming politicians, and get out and work in the community, talk to your kids and others, etc.. do what u can REALLY do if you care. The guns aren't going away, it's not possible at this point

Donald Trump, by teabaggins on Aug 5, 2019 18:14:06 GMT 1, Another interesting random fact is that depending on the source or study, only 1.3-3% of prisoners committed their gun related crime with a legally purchased firearm.... Only having this end of the topic because people keep circling back to gun control and legalities.. these aren't legal guns, or even owned by the assailant most times Don't 99% of all guns start off as legally manufactured and legally sold to someone? That where they come from....

This didn't start in 2016.....
And u guys could really learn to stop assuming political party association. I can have these same points and vote Democrat, in fact maybe I did... Keep making it political, that only insures it continues because it divides.. keep leaving congressmen and senators who have immense power in the situation out, keep excusing parents, in fact keep excusing the shooters because according to you is not even their fault, it's Donald Trump and guns.. this never happened before lol.. this is insanity

Keep making it political, that only insures it continues because it divides.. keep leaving congressmen and senators who have immense power in the situation out, keep excusing parents, in fact keep excusing the shooters because according to you is not even their fault, it's Donald Trump and guns.. this never happened before lol.. this is insanity No democrat I know spouts the crap you spout. Just be honest about who you are.
And I've never said we should keep leaving congressman and senators out, or excusing parents, or excusing the shooters. But I guess it's easier for you to put words in my mouth...
If you really can't see why DT is being brought into a conversation about gun violence, you're either being willfully ignorant, or you're lying. Maybe u should get friends that aren't far left socialists... The middle or left leaning middle exists
Regardless of your offilIation, it's sad people keep blaming 1 man, guns, etc and not doing anything personally..
Most of you guys on here could sell 1 art piece and fund a children's program for 3-5 years. Work there also, and actually impact the future.
Or just keep sitting back discussing what's wrong and what others should do

Donald Trump, by Chris JL on Aug 5, 2019 18:46:55 GMT 1, Well we are mainly talking about mass shootings.. and no need all guns are thankfully already banned here.
Indeed, UK criminals have to use knifes. And that’s exactly why the homicide rate in the UK is only a small fraction (about one-fifth) of the US one (while other crimes are committed with similar rates).
(With all due respect, how one can make such dumb statements with a straight face really escapes me... would you rather face an attacker armed with a firearm or with a penknife?)

You don't know who my friends are. But no, I won't be befriending any far right nationalists anytime soon.
And you also don't know what I'm doing outside this forum to fight against gun violence.
You know nothing. Keep your assumptions to yourself.

UK: 1.2 per 100k US: 5.4 per 100k
Let me do the math: 1.2/5.4 ie about one fifth.
Source: United Nation Office of Drugs and Crime. A bit better than Metro 😉
But you can even check it on Wikipedia (same source): en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_intentional_homicide_rate

But the Metro article is right in that cities in EU/UK are way safer than in US in relative terms (relative to the countryside comparison). I don’t have an updated source at hand, but when a decade ago I was considering NY vs London as home base the ratio of the homicide rates was about one tenth!

Donald Trump, by coller on Aug 5, 2019 20:12:55 GMT 1, seems pretty obvious that gun regulation is the answer, just look across the pond. or at any other country except the united states.
and i bet none of these shooters would've even tried w/ a knife, because they all have no backbone.
