Book Jackets by artists, by trapnel1 on Apr 2, 2016 20:24:38 GMT 1, I'm currently getting my books shelved after a house move. I've collected books for years, long before I purchased any significant art - mainly first edition literary fiction (surely there must be one or two other collectors here?).
With first edition fiction, the cover is a critical part of the package (and condition makes a huge difference). I'm interested in compiling a list of covers designed by the artists we talk about here. Not catalogues or art books, just fiction. I don't think there will be many (why not?), but I'm ready to be surprised. There's a wealth of knowledge here to be shared...
I'll kick things off with the cover to Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell, which I only recently found out was designed by Kai and Sunny. Published by Sceptre in 2004 and shortlisted for the Booker Prize - also a good read, which is definitely not always the case! Not a particularly rare book, but £100 plus for a fine first edition....

Ah, a fellow book lover, I have quite a large collection of modern first editions, I too have collected books for many years and it is the same for me, the jacket illustration is a big part of it.
I prefer post 1980's for some reason, mainly because they are accessible (becoming less so though)
I hope some day to be able to get them all out of their boxes and have floor to ceiling bookshelf's all the way around one room, something I think about far too much .
You starting this post has again reminded me how sad it is that I cannot have all my books on display
My twopenith worth:
Bret Easton Ellis, American Psycho, cover illustration by Marshall Arisman

I have just that, floor to (almost) ceiling shelves in one reasonably large room. That room was why I wanted to buy this house ten years ago. Sadly have to sell it now. But providing the sale goes through ok I have set aside some funds from the mortgage to get a carpenter to do the same in the new house. Books are intrinsically beautify. I could never own a kindle. I would miss the feel, smell, cover art etc of a real book.

Book Jackets by artists, by Feral Things on Apr 3, 2016 10:28:28 GMT 1, Back in 2001, Banksy did the cover for the reissue of Nick Cave's 'And the Ass Saw the Angel' and Shepard Fairey also did covers for reissues of a couple of Orwell novels. But I think my favourite (given that he's been painting illegally since 1989) was Stohead doing the cover for an edition of the French penal code! Sickboy, Smash137, Violeau and Mist also did covers for other sections of the French legal code at the same time. Before the Penguin street art covers were published (which Schrödinger's Chat posted above) it was very confusing why Bristol graffiti had suddenly taken a very literary direction.

Despite this being a major American Novel, it was only published as a paperback in the US so this was the first hardcover edition in English (Picador, 1998) which definitely boosts its desirability. The first printing is currently over £100.... There was a 2012 American Hardcover from Centipede Press (200 copies only) which is significantly more expensive.

Book Jackets by artists, by trapnel1 on Apr 3, 2016 12:28:31 GMT 1, DOWN WITH THE KINDLE!!!!!!!!! Despite my overwhelming love of books (as objects), I do use the Kindle App a lot. The vast majority of my books are hardcover, and travelling with them was always inconvenient, as well as the difficulty of not causing any minor damage. Indeed, sometimes nowadays I buy the Kindle version as well as a hardcover, the first to read and the second for the collection (I'm sure I'm not alone in this).
There are a lot of similarities with prints - not least that the vast majority of books are destined to be almost worthless, while a small number will have sustained value far beyond their purchase price...... And just as I won't buy a piece of art that I don't like, so I won't but a book I don't want to read!

Book Jackets by artists, by trapnel1 on Apr 4, 2016 21:41:42 GMT 1, Another Kai And Sunny cover using their Just an Illusion image Kai & Sunny seem to have a sideline in book cover design.... they list quite a few on their website.
They have done a few of David Mitchell's and there was a letterpress edition of a new short story by him (now sold out) at their recent Stolenspace show.
Mitchell lived in Japan for a number of years, and as well as writing an introduction to this book translated it from Japanese with his wife. He also has a son with autism, so has a special interest in the subject.

Book Jackets by artists, by loother on Apr 5, 2016 11:37:34 GMT 1, I really like Kai & Sunny's book covers, having first discovered them from Cloud Atlas, and my search for some prints by them is what led me here in the first place. The rest is (expensive) history.

Book Jackets by artists, by trapnel1 on Apr 10, 2016 12:01:35 GMT 1, Back in 2001, Banksy did the cover for the reissue of Nick Cave's ' And the Ass Saw the Angel' So this is the only Banksy novel cover (unless someone suggests otherwise!), done for the Penguin paperback reissue of Nick Cave's 1989 novel. Anyone know how this came about? Was the image done specially for the book? Is Banksy friendly with Nick Cave? Where is the original? (With Nick Cave?)

Book Jackets by artists, by Feral Things on Apr 10, 2016 14:25:43 GMT 1, I think they might have got their dates a bit mixed up. Nick Cave did play Glastonbury in 1998 but the 'And the Ass Saw the Angel' reissue wasn't until three years later. And likewise, the first Blur releases featuring Banksy's work were 'Out of Time' and the 'Think Tank' promo which were released in 2003.
There are a few variants but this one was sold at Bonhams back in 2007. Bonham's called the piece 'Horse on Steel' ('horse' rather than 'ass') which suggests they didn't know the background of the piece (or what a horse looks like ).

Book Jackets by artists, by trapnel1 on Apr 23, 2016 20:29:31 GMT 1, Limited edition of Boogie-Woogie, a novel about the contemporary art word by Danny Moynihan (Duck editions, 2000). It was subsequently made into a film of the same name which I haven't seen. The jacket designed by Damien Hirst, paying homage to a number of his contemporaries. Signed on the back of the jacket by Hirst, and the book itself signed by the author.
An unusual signed Hirst limited edition, which you should be able to pick up for £100-150 in fine condition. I have seen the jackets framed, but this one is sitting firmly on my book shelves.....
