Back from the Ghetto, by numusic on Dec 10, 2007 20:13:02 GMT 1, I don't understand why people seem to have a problem with the high security at the airport going to and from Israel. Given the hijackings, 9/11 etc why wouldn't you be happy that the security is so tight? It means you are as safe as you can be when flying to and from an area where security is a huge issue. If I was flying to or from Israel, and the security wasn't tight as hell, I'd be very afraid. My advice - be prepared to be cross-examined and don't take it personally - be grateful that people are taking your safety so seriously.
Good point, it was nothing unexpected.. to expect a walk through is mad considering the history of El Al. Had worse interrogations coming from Amsterdam. All good, falafals here I come

Back from the Ghetto, by alsbabar on Dec 10, 2007 20:56:27 GMT 1, In my opinion, I thought the Israeli security at Tel Aviv was over the top and unwarranted. To treat everyone like a potential terrorist, what kind of paranoid country is that???
They dont have any comprehension as to why people would travel to Bethlehem for Santas Ghetto, more to the point they dont have any comprehension as to why anyone would want to travel to Bethlehem. The propoganda they use is echoed by the way the treat westerners who visit their country.
I echo also Scottyd's comments, if you think being honest is the best policy, then make sure you have no contact with any Palestinians, ie taxi drivers. We went with good intentions, kept an open mind about both sides, but I know which side of the barrier were the friendlier, more welcoming, and less paranoid.

Weird isn't it, Bethlehem is so important to Christians I'm really surprised that they don't expect it to be a massive attraction, I'm sure if the Western Wall (wailing wall) for the Jews or Mecca for Muslims was treated this way they'd be all out war.

Back from the Ghetto, by BONGO on Dec 10, 2007 21:11:29 GMT 1, BONGO UNDERSTAND, BUT AS EL AL SCREEN PASSENGERS AT LENGTH BEFORE CHECK IN, WALK THROUGH AT TEL AVIV WAS A FEW SECONDS ONLY.
SADLY, A NATION THAT CONSIDERS ITSELF TO HAVE BEEN UNDER SIEGE SINCE INCEPTION, SOME DEGREE OF PARANOIA IS TO BE EXPECTED.

I'm not religious at all, but even I realise that the Western Wall, Mecca, The Ganges etc are very important places for religious groups, and that should be respected.

Back from the Ghetto, by scottd007 on Dec 10, 2007 21:27:17 GMT 1, Bongo - getting in was very easy. Getting out when they have discovered you have visited The West Bank is a very tedious and at times humiliating experience. Sat in your pants in the "rubber glove" back room of an airport is not where you want to be - it's not a good look).

Back from the Ghetto, by alsbabar on Dec 10, 2007 22:13:47 GMT 1, I think its fair to say Bongo had a very different experience to what myself, Scott, Hoops, Ed, Vazie, her husband, and few others had, and that is not a bad thing. I guess the crux is to go with El Al, rather than with BA.
I also think the point is, and let us not lose sight of it, the SG is still worth the effort, irrespective if you get a hard time or not

So, jews imprison the palestinian race (which if they are a race would involve imprisoning Jordanian people amongst others) and now they've killed Jesus (known as god in western circles). Murdering god? You don't get much worse than that! This sounds like hating to me, above and beyond the call of duty. Okay, you don't like Israel. Thats one thing, but I think you crossed the line into some medieval argument here. I think its getting out of order and I'm sure I'll get negged and shouted down for this, but thats to be expected.

Back from the Ghetto, by gozgoz on Dec 10, 2007 23:28:04 GMT 1, I was in that rubberglove back room of the airport and I will continually praise the LOrd everyday from now onwards that they didn't perform a cavity search.
I was in my pants though but the bright side is that after being rubbed and searched by three goodlooking burly men, I'm now sure of my heterosexuality.

Gozgoz I cannot stop laughing Sorry don't mean to belittle your experience ;D ;D ;D ;D +1 for the post AND for making the effort to go
Well fellas just think what you have got to look forward to ;D You'll need more than the 2 pairs of underpants I fear ;D ;D ;D
What is it about you fellas that is getting the security so jumpy? Do you all have tight fitting jeans long hair and doggy looks ;D ;D
Personally I think the sudden influx of young men all wanting to visit must be a worry
or is it the Santa's hat white beard and red trousers ho ho ho thats giving you all away ;D
