O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM, by digdog on Dec 6, 2007 16:39:51 GMT 1, gozgoz have pm'd you.
Thanks Becksaboo, I tend to follow the rule that if I don't have anything worth saying I keep my mouth shut, but the experience was enough to overcome my shy boy instincts...
Vazie
Good tip about time of day to visit. Apart from the ghetto being closed I had to shout at the checkpoint for someone to let us in...
Look forward to seeing who got what if anything after 24th. I was concerned that Simon said the auction wasn't sealed bids, but having read the site it looks as though it should be so don't know exactly whats going on???

O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM, by krazy on Dec 6, 2007 23:56:54 GMT 1, Great posts, thanks for all the info. I wish I could go!
My friend in Bethlehem said the starting price for artwork there is $100,000... is that true?? I would love the Aiko painting, but I'm a long way off having that amount of $$.

NOT True not on on my price list which was not complete as not all the art had arrived when I was there. the lowest price I could see was $200 US dollars for a Gee Vaucher piece
However these are only starting prices and I am sure will end up at the high end After all it is for Charity

O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM, by krazy on Dec 7, 2007 0:45:25 GMT 1, Thanks Vazie! Do you know what the starting price of the Aiko is (PM me if you want).
Perhaps my friend was confused, and only asked about the Banksy pieces .

O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM, by becksaboo on Dec 7, 2007 1:54:55 GMT 1, yeah frankie as i said in the other thread, the art i'm impressed with is on the wall not what's in the show. I think the artists have put my thought into what's gone out onto the street and is viewed by thousands rather than what's going to be viewed by a select few.
although i don't know what prints are going to be released, i think banksy is making a statement by not releasing a new image (am talking about the trolleys and the flag) as that way it focuses the attention on the actual point of the show.
the best work in the show is by the local artists in my opinion but i do like the bast and insect stuff.

O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM, by Cocteau 101 on Dec 7, 2007 1:58:51 GMT 1, Hi Frankie
I like bits and pieces but not all. Good to see some local representation. Not keen on the Dove to be honest, I like the message just not a massive fan of the image. I like the Angel Throwing Hearts best and the Slingshot Rat - a rat is always a classic.
However, I really admire POW for doing this in Bethlehem, despite all the comments posted on here about the politics of the situation, the need to help locally is important. It must be a fuckin nightmare for the kids growing up in that environment.
But yeh I like bits but not all.

O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM, by gozgoz on Dec 10, 2007 12:45:41 GMT 1, Gozgoz here. Writing from the beach in tel aviv.
Will write more when I come back and not having to type with my thumbs.
All I wanna say is that the art really is overshadowed by everything else here. The people, the life, the desert, the political situation. Come here talk to the people, talk to the taxi drivers, go to the desert. I spent 6 hrs doing all that and at about one, my driver asked if I wanted to head to the ghetto. And to be honest, at that point in time, I forgot that the ghetto was why I came here.
I didn't like any of the art in the ghetto and all the art on the walls of the street, its all been posted around.
But I'll urge anyone to come over just for the experience.
And the fantastic kebabs.

O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM, by alsbabar on Dec 10, 2007 12:53:34 GMT 1, Frankie and Becksaboo - have either of you been out to the Ghetto, to make such remarks? Or are you basing your opinions on what you have seen online?

O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM, by gozgoz on Dec 10, 2007 13:04:54 GMT 1, I hope I don't get negged for this but I really didn't see anything I liked at SG. The faile was disappointing. The banksy was well... Banksy. Micallef I've never liked. Erm. Nothing.
I like ericailcaines and sam3's works on the walls though.
But as I said, the art ended up being really secondary in my visit.
Tried looking for other forum members but didn't see anyone there save for an italian news crew.

O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM, by gozgoz on Dec 10, 2007 13:53:19 GMT 1, I think you deserve a plus one for inspiring me to go.
I think I went also at time of my life (ie now) where I just broke up and some other krap stuff are happening to my life. And going there really did put my life into perspective. And I'm not usually very religious but seeing the church of nativity did strike a chord in me.
And yes. I'm dead tired. I slept for 16 hours last night! Gonna head to the airport now...
I'll plus your one when I get back. I can't seem to smite/exhalt on blackberry.

i wish i could go.....
so yes i am basing my opinions on what i've seen online which obviously isn't going to do the work justice.
all i'm saying from what i've seen is that the most impressive thing is that they've gone over there- the art is secondary. the stuff on the street is the most impressive thing to me, the stuff for sale is secondary which is how it should be. i'm sure if it was in a different context i'd feel differently about it but for me the art pales into insignificance considering the situation.
i really like some of the work but not all of it- but then everyone has different tastes.

O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM, by alsbabar on Dec 10, 2007 14:22:34 GMT 1, ok so you dont like some of the art, that is your opinion, and one that i respect, however, when you look at the art in its environment, like the Dove on 10 by 15 foot wall on a prominent street, in the middle of Bethlehem, you cannot help but feel it is actually a beautiful piece of work, not because of the aesthetics of it, but also the message - and I guarantee you this, all of the work have the same impact. Lets not forget also the art for sale is primary, as the money raised goes to help the local community - and that is what this project is about

O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM, by becksaboo on Dec 10, 2007 14:33:15 GMT 1, alsbaber- i said i loved the work on the street for exactly those reasons! i also hope they sell all of the pieces to millionaires who will pay top whack for it all.
in no way was i criticizing what they're doing out there, i think it's amazing and i hope they make as much money as possible as well as raise awareness.
