SANTAS GHETTO, 03 DAYS TO GO., by manty on Dec 3, 2007 0:45:23 GMT 1, You were saying :-)
Or do you still think this ? ;D
tues or weds? 3 days from now is weds Their lack of professionalism does annoy me: they don't know themselves when the Ghetto will be ready, they change the 'days left' graphic late in the day or not at all some days (like yesterday). I wish they'd pull their finger out.

SANTAS GHETTO, 03 DAYS TO GO., by shavemysoul on Dec 3, 2007 1:02:52 GMT 1, Now the question is...is this for real?? I can be there tomorrow... flights no problem.. Is there actually a ghetto there, or is this some sort of piss take using loads of talented photoshopping?
I would has at a guess it's a very elaborate piss-take... looks like it's an online thing. Gonna be great though!

SANTAS GHETTO, 03 DAYS TO GO., by shavemysoul on Dec 3, 2007 1:06:41 GMT 1, The Conor Harrington, Mic. and Kelsey Brook pieces look top notch. If these are released as prints (may well not be I guess) and I can get near them, my CC is already screaming 'ouch'.

That was my first thought..... I can just see POW having a webcam set up and lauging at anyone that turns up to an empty store and non existant ghetto.
I'm not sure, the bit about donating all proceeds to the local community seems genuine.

POW are notoriously tongue in cheek and great at it. I think that part may have been a sly shot at the expression and its flippant use.... maybe.

SANTAS GHETTO, 03 DAYS TO GO., by monstris on Dec 3, 2007 10:37:10 GMT 1, West Banksy.... Cryptic clue for all of you....
Why did no one listen to me?
Anyway...Bethlehem isn't that hard to get to tho you will have to 'dirty' your passport with an Israeli stamp...that makes going to certain countries a tricky affair, impossible in some cases. I have two passports. A 'clean' and a 'dirty' one. But I've got friends in the area who will get me things.
And what's brilliant is getting some Palestinian artists in on the act. Now THAT'S important.

SANTAS GHETTO, 03 DAYS TO GO., by alsbabar on Dec 3, 2007 15:05:12 GMT 1, OK there seems to be a lot of talk of the ease in how to get to Bethlehem. Let me make one important fact clear, Bethlehem or parts there of, are described as a war zone, and anyone going out there thinking they will walk away with tubes of art, is a fool. I tried to go there only a couple of months ago, and was strongly advised against it. The foreign office, even advise against travelling to the West Bank, check out their site www.fco.gov.uk/servlet/Front?pagename=OpenMarket/Xcelerate/ShowPage&c=Page&cid=1007029390590&a=KCountryAdvice&aid=1013618385504
Pay particular attention to this statement "Travel within the West Bank is not possible without passing through multiple Israeli military checkpoints. These checkpoints are flash points for violent incidents and have been the scene of several fatal attacks". If POW are encouraging people to travel out to Bethlehem to boost tourism, then poor shame on POW, as they are asking people to risk their lives in the pursuit of art.
My own personal opinion, no art is worth risking my life for, but hey each to their own

There are people who make a habit of going to the west bank...if you're not a journalist, there are other ways of getting to Bethlehem...particularly at this time of year. There are tours leaving from Jerusalem via sherut (a taxi/van thing), there are coach tours, and there is the ISM (international solidarity movement). Yes you will all undergo a form of checkpoint so don't go in with your eyes closed. If you're flying into Tel Aviv, you'll be interrogated on arrival and on departure. If you're coming by land over Jordan, you'll be interrogated on arrival and departure. The more trips you make to Israel/Palestine, the more you get used to it. If you're after advice, PM me.
The WB isn't as dangerous as people would have you believe, but be prepared for a shock. Palestinians live in poverty, particularly in refugee camps. The settler zealots nearby have guns and don't like having you there. Every car is identified as Israeli or Palestinian depending on the license plate. If you're expecting a pissup, it's possible. There are a fair few Christians knocking around who drink, but being drunk in the street is frowned upon...and if you're a girl who smokes, doing so in the street will get you some funny looks. Also respect the dress codes ladies. Cover your shoulders in the street, cover your head in a mosque.
You'll find lots of photogenic kids running around the street wanting their picture taken in front of...well...anything.
Things are cheaper in the West Bank than in Israel but the currency is the same. Unlike places like Nablus, Bethlehem isn't under a shoot-on-site curfew because of all the tourist interest there.
And if someone invites you for a 'smoke' they mean from a shisha...not hash.
It's a great place to go and you'll make some firm friends quickly. And you'll gain a perspective on your own life you'll not get anywhere else. But DO NOT go expecting things are the same as anywhere else vaguely 'poor' that you've been (India, Thailand, etc). There is a war going on. And although the hospitality you receive will make that seem like it isn't, the sight of APCs, Caterpillar bulldozers and the the sound of Apache helicopters overhead will quickly remind you. And don't turn up acting like an arrogant t**t...the Israelis at the checkpoints are 18yrs old, on national service, with guns...the ones with the yarmulkes and american accents really do believe this land is theirs. The rest are so f**king bored they may shoot at you to alleviate this.
I've been back and forth from J'lem to the West Bank to Gaza a few times. Although you get used to the checkpoints, you never get used to having a little red laser from a gun to your head.

I guessed the answer to your clue, but couldn't believe it and thought it was more likely to be west as in west of england - Bristol.
