ADVICE FOR NEW COLLECTORS, by Iqra'a on Mar 6, 2017 16:23:15 GMT 1, A few points I've had to learn (sometimes the hard way) over the years:
- If you feel hesitant about a purchase, whether price or image, hold off for a couple of days and come back to it (even if the matter is time sensitive). If you still feel the same way and are willing/capable of spending money, then go with it - otherwise, nothing is worse than spending hundreds and even thousands on pieces you wish you never got. I realized this after being tight on funds and noticed the amount of art I was more than willing to give up in order to, for instance, pay for framing of another piece.
- If a piece is not hang-up ready, realize that framing (if done right) can cost as much as double the cost of the image. Framing is expensive. If tight on funds, realize this is a very real expense and weigh out the real cost and value. My rule of thumb is if anything is below $500, assume that framing will at least double the total cost.
- Which brings me to: Archival frame as much as you can - make sure everything is acid-free and UV protected and done professionally. For you DYI framers, there are always small details you wouldn't pay attention to unless you've doing it for years. Most important is maintaining space between the actual piece and the glass/acrylic because humidity and moisture will get in and possibly cause the paint/hand-finishing to fuse to the glass permanently. Unfortunately I had to learn this with my most expensive acquisition.
- If you're not framing it, store flat and acid-free. My recommendation, especially for people looking to invest in prints, get archival sleeves with acid-free backing. They come in all sizes and are very affordable.
- Talk to your favorite artists directly - even if you aren't interested in buying at the moment. Artists nowadays are very accessible via social media/websites/exhibitions and establishing some form of communication can lead to awesome things. In most cases where I missed a release I really wanted, I was able to get APs by simply reaching out to the artist. Of course I'm not advising to suck up to an artist in hopes of getting a favor in the future. I'm simply advising to consider reaching out because artists really appreciate genuine interest in their work and great friendships can be formed. I've had plenty of artists that I've purchased from crash at my place during their travels and vice versa.

ADVICE FOR NEW COLLECTORS, by 19818914 on Aug 16, 2019 4:16:41 GMT 1, The best piece of advice for a new collector is to forget about this forum. Before you know it youโll be buying postcards and shitty posters and pin s.
Go to events go to galleries. Scout Instagram. Donโt fall into the trap of buying the same artists as everyone else. Thereโs a whole world of art outside of this place and donโt get too caught up in the investment side of collecting.
Lmao just noticed how old this thread is.

ADVICE FOR NEW COLLECTORS, by iamzero on Aug 16, 2019 6:41:26 GMT 1, This whole place has been infiltrated by hedgefunders speculating on who the next flash in the pan artist is or if Banksy is making work under a different name.

Easiest place to get the heads up with all print drops , gallery exhibitions in one place rather than trawling the net.part of the hobby learning from mistakes .

A better way to describe it might be that this forum is a good place to get the heads up on print drops and gallery exhibitions from the small subset of artists that are endlessly discussed on this forum. That's very different from *all* print drops or exhibitions.
There's plenty of art and artists that get absolutely no attention here, and similarly there is plenty of art and artists who seem to only have interest/relevance within this bubble.
It's a big world out there - just because there's no "Post your ______ for sale on eBay" thread for a particular artist on this forum, it doesn't make them irrelevant.
(I know that wasn't what you were implying at all - I'm being slightly facetious to make a point)

Reading a bit too deeply into my post , was just a quickfire response ..urban art market , niche market , just easy to use forum to get quite a wide spectrum of information here .spending / buying habits are down to individuals , mostly adults here that can make an informative decision with research if chose to or just follow the threads with the largest amount of praise / hype around an artist : new release

ADVICE FOR NEW COLLECTORS, by k2 on Aug 16, 2019 16:23:44 GMT 1, I wish i joined this forum before i started collecting.I certainly wouldn't of payed flip prices like i did I thought i'd learnt a lot to what i 1st knew,,but was wrong cos I've ended up with a Ted Patrick,so i'll never learn ๐ A slightly radical strategy might be to never buy anything at all at release time, and to completely detach yourself from the hype of new releases and the 'fear of missing out' that they seem to generate.
If there's a particular image/edition that really sticks with you, and that you find yourself coming back to time and time again, then consider purchasing it on the secondary market once the dust has settled.
Yes it may often cost you more (although not always), but overall I suspect that you may be financially better off. And of course you wouldn't end up with a house full of prints that, on reflection, you have no idea why you bought in the first place.

You have ! You bought at release cost! Not at flip prices that it will achieve! Now just have to sell within 1 month bubble of hype when they list on ebay! Otherwise unfortunately not learnt๐ต๐

Yes. This place will cost you more than it will save you. And it will retard your growth as a collector.

ADVICE FOR NEW COLLECTORS, by Express Post on Aug 17, 2019 1:28:16 GMT 1, My advice would be to buy the following for cost to flip.
Pejac editions, Oli Epp originals and prints, Damien Hirst Heni editions, KAWS museum edition prints, Harland Miller editions, Paul Insect glitter editions, Javier Calleja originals, toy and print editions and Martin Whatson editions.
Sound about right children?
