New Penny release, by yorkie on Feb 17, 2017 21:26:06 GMT 1, I love the print and normally I would be all over this but the prices are way too high in my opinion and I cannot justify that spend on this.
The two original 'butterflies' are still available at 1900 dollars with the discount code working if anyone is interested.

Yorkie I don't think these prices are high at all. I've been on this board for 6 1/2 years, Penny has developed nicely with his prices rising steadily since I've been here. I would think we'd all be thrilled to see this type of growth and success for any artist supported here, and for those that bought into Penny early a rise in the valuation of their respective collections.

New Penny release, by Deleted on Feb 17, 2017 23:07:30 GMT 1, Did you use the "howdy" discount code for 10% off?
Also in the panic didn't use the code. I didn't mind though. It's my first penny and am pretty pleased with the image.

New Penny release, by Poly Mindset on Feb 18, 2017 3:33:08 GMT 1, Surely the American dollar would have worked better with the Cuban connection......... Agreed. I like most of Penny's work but a US bill would have made more sense. It's still a nice work and I bet looks great in the flesh/paper. I have to wonder if the meaning is more historical with this piece. Just a thought, but perhaps the thief is coming back to steal all the money that was taken from Cuba in the "Battle of Havana" or something on that level. I think there has to be some back story behind this one. I'm sure it's not just a random design especially with the two different currencies. Thoughts anyone???

A large part of the slave trade made it's way through Cuba to England. England's Industrial Age was largely accomplished by the plundering of Latin American resources and slaves.

New Penny release, by kultur on Feb 18, 2017 17:43:15 GMT 1, Someone please tell me how Penny gets a free pass with all of his magically appearing APs and editions of 1 that get turned into hundreds (i.e. smash and grab).
"Time is Money" (I have one) was not a numbered edition and we were told verbally and in the COA that there were no APs... now we see AP1 meaning there are more. He continually does this and no one slams him like they do other artists(Eelus gets slammed for all the APs of prints but these are magically appearing original HPMs). HE PULLS THIS SCAM CONSTANTLY. LITERALLY PRINTING MONEY.
If you have a "limited edition" piece by Penny you may be shocked as the actual number that are out there. Only person who profits from this is Penny and he obviously does not care about his collectors or being credible.
Sad as i kept on giving him the benefit of the doubt for years and probably have one of the largest collections of his work out there, but I refuse to support him anymore.

I get where you are coming from, but it seems to be the norm these days. Not just prints, but editions on canvas too. Generally ap's should make up to 10% of the edition, but doesn't seem to be the case in urban/street art. I suppose if the artist can see there is a demand for a piece, then they will keep releasing them. It's shit for the fans, but in the end it's up to the artist and they need to put food on the table.

New Penny release, by nobokov on Feb 18, 2017 19:21:41 GMT 1, I wonder if he would be able to make his images larger on some large counterfeit currencies. I can't justify paying that much for tiny artwork, but definitely recognize his talent.
On another unrelated note, are there stencil artists out there that use laser cutters?

I suppose if the artist can see there is a demand for a piece, then they will keep releasing them. It'ss**t for the fans, but in the end it's up to the artist and they need to put food on the table. I disagree, as artists should have integrity. If there is demand for a piece they should just let it ride and reach into their creative consciousness and develop a new piece. This is how artist increase their notoriety and following. Otherwise their so called fan base will shut down and feel just like Kultur does and it becomes counter productive and a bitterness towards their name. This is especially true with artists that are in demand. I'm sure Penny isn't hurting for cash and has plenty of food on his table. STOP THE MADNESS all you in demand artists!!! Keep moving forward and create new pieces and get off the gravy train.
I agree, I would much rather see an artist move on and better themselves. I was just pointing out that it's not just Penny or Eelus that's doing it. A lot of artists either release further editions or try and recreate similar images of popular pieces. I'm not saying it's right, but just giving a reason as to why they would do it.

I bought this original Irina piece during a benefit auction. Then a year later she releases 10-20 of the exact same image on same material. ( Just a different background material would have been fine ) -anyways, I sent them a polite email and they pretty much just said "sorry". After that, I did notice they were very particular on how they labeled the original artwork. Original art on varied background no more then 30 for this run etc... great for the new buyers, not so much for me... lol. I just stopped buying her work at that point. Plenty of great artist out there to choose from. ec

New Penny release, by sl on Feb 18, 2017 21:41:25 GMT 1, I think it sucks that artists release and re-release the same image over and over. Yes, they need to put food on the table but when you devalue an artwork by making more of it you are hurting the very people that believe in and support you. In the long run you will only lose supporters. Changing the size of image or small color variations touted as new release is wack. Start talking about new AP's and bs EE's and the greediness seems out of control.

New Penny release, by Poly Mindset on Mar 1, 2017 19:11:39 GMT 1, My Penny Flashpoint arrived in the UK today (with no import duty ) Amazing piece of work and really happy I grabbed one. This really is a very well thought out and very skillfully executed piece. I love the concept of using a thief to embolden England's role in history and the use of the flashlight to illuminated the underbelly of the Cuban currency solidifying the message of imperialism and the exploitation of weaker countries by more powerful ones over the course of time. I think global bullying was more prevalent in the past but I'm sure it still exists today on numerous levels. This worries me because I think it makes a case as a direct connection to nuclear armament of smaller countries like Iran and North Korea. At some point the scales get tipped and self preservation escalates to the point of saying f**kYou...KABOOOOM. It's such a dangerous chess game and I often pray that the people in power making the moves have current information and consider all the ramifications of their next move. However, in the end I think we're all screwed unless we learn to respect one another as people.

Agreed. There is an amazing book, The Open Veins of Latin America, by Eduardo Galeano, that is a fascinating read.
