Out of interest, why the reference to "WE ARE PEOPLE" on the paste-ups?
What that could suggest is the following:
(i) being an animal is not good enough; (ii) the average viewer considers only humans to be truly deserving of respect; and (iii) the interest of elephants therefore requires they be presented in a human light, by using anthropomorphic terminology.

Elephantman street sculpture, by elephantman on May 1, 2017 22:26:05 GMT 1, Hi Met,
Why 'We Are People'? because an elephant needs to be re-classified as a person, a non-human person but a person nonetheless. Humans are under the illusion that they are separate from animals, that their sense of self is different to ours. The Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness says otherwise: www.newscientist.com/article/mg21528836-200-animals-are-conscious-and-should-be-treated-as-such/
Is it anthropomorphising? It is impossible to understand anything unless through one's human perception filters. Perhaps I am being a spokesperson on their behalf, but if they can be re-classified then they can have legal rights inaccessible to them as animals, which are no better than 'things' under the law. They are also refugees; without guidance they have been leaving the countries with the most poaching and finding their way to places where they are safer. Elephants, while being recognisably intelligent on human terms are also intelligent in ways we cannot classify or comprehend.
Being an animal is definitely not good enough. Under our noses we are overseeing an unprecedented attack on the natural world on which we ultimately depend. Humans cannot thrive unless we learn to respect the creatures we share this planet with. 90% of animals over a couple of kilos on this planet are domestic livestock, most of which are not living on an picture box farm but in horrible circumstances before their inevitable demise. Quite apart from animal agriculture being the single largest driver of climate change and deforestation, it is also the the greatest amount of cruelty inflicted by one species upon others in the history of the planet - something we will look back upon with horror. Being an animal, is definitely not good enough.
