Bitcoin, by sparky999 on Oct 5, 2017 10:30:18 GMT 1, I dont understand? There seem to be bluechip companies embracing Ethereum. I am no expert but it seemed a better solution than Bitcoin. the only thing bitcoin appears to have is a known brand, and that seems like an empty promise. Can you put it in laymans terms please? I did a bit above, it's marketing/ handwaiving/ second hand car salesmans**t. Ethereum might be something mega one day but it's just not there yet, it's valuation is absurd for the state of the project. I'll be a buyer below $80, I've been short for a while and still am.

Bitcoin, by cogitobcn on Oct 5, 2017 10:35:12 GMT 1, Does anyone have an opinion on XRP? An opinion on Lumens? I have a few Lumens, but only because Kraken give them out a few last year, I bought a few more expecting to multiply, but they skipped the last month's bubble, so not especially interested in them.
I'm also more interested in the XRP, I bought a few thousands of pounds some months ago, they are supposed to be used as a future replacement of the IBAN wire transfers and many strong banks have invested in them, but some people say that the banks can use XRP technology to replace the IBANs without XRP themselves, so I don't know.
My naive approach was to invest mainly in BTC+ETH as core tokens, and speculate with XRP (banks' side) and MNR (anonymity side). Not sure who will win, the "legal system" or the "illegal system", so I bet for both.
Anyway, after multiplying x5 in the last 6 months I have sold half of my tokens and plan to sell up to 2/3 to consolidate gains, expecting to rebuy mainly BTCs before the next 30%-50% fall that can't take more than a year. At least this is my guess.

Bitcoin, by gd79 on Oct 5, 2017 10:44:53 GMT 1, There is a huge problem with thinking crypto is a good fundamental investment. For it to be worth something, it has to be useful as a means of exchange. For that to be the case, it cannot be volatile. If it is not volatile, it won't offer you the stunning gains that we have seen so far. For it to keep delivering such gains, it cannot be useful anymore. Anyone investing is treating it as purely speculative. A speculative currency is entirely non functional for transactions. None of this means you can't make money, just don't swallow the line that it will keep going up forever for fundamental reasons This is entirely false - volatility does not affect the ability of a medium to act as a value transfer system. It does increase the cost of carry - not the same thing.
Then tell me a medium of exchange that demonstrates the same level of volatility? There are none, outside of Zimbabwe or the Wiemar republic.
And obviously you cannot buy all the ETH in the world. The point was one of context and materiality. The point being that even if JPM had a meaningful share of the ETH market, it would be chickenshit to them.
Boost as much as you like, I'm all for it. I'd happily make money trading it. It will never be a viable currency though, just a speculative vehicle and the vast majority of funds put to work in crypto will be lost.

You were smart enough to take some profit though and your waiting timeline seems reasonable.
Honestly kudos most people are too dumb to take profits.

Historical charts of any currency/gold etc will show you periods of insane volatility particularly in their infancy. Gold was highly precious in Europe whilst worthless in South America during the 14/1500's.
Yes the vast majority of people will lose money in these markets, currently it is a very speculative market but if you think money won't be fully digitized with all transactions recorded on an immutable digital ledger in the future then you are blind to the world around you.

It certainly won't be to the benefit of anyone whose entire knowledge is based on a side conversation in an art forum... (I am not referring to you sparky, there are a few that at least realise that you need some knowledge as well as pure luck)

Bitcoin, by Deleted on Oct 5, 2017 14:35:17 GMT 1, Also: what would your ideal portfolio look like if you weren't planning on doing any trading at all. because you don't have the time to stay up to date with all the news, and you'd want to lock away your ledger/trezor for lets say a year or two?
Or would you just stay out of crypto in that case?
When people ask me this question I mostly give them the second answer tbh.

Keep the shit coins to 1% max if they really go somewhere it won't matter one bit if you had 1 or 5% but if they die it will.
If you hold for a few years you should do well with this but you'll take a big downswing somewhere during that period.

Its an investment forum, art is just a byproduct as are these new coin things that the puppies are into.
I'd like to get into it but don't know where to begin, plus truth be told I am a bit thick

You missed the point. Much like this whole thread.

I only know about chaincoin. If you got it early on under a cent the you're doing ok. There was a big pump and dump in mid July. Got to $6.59 that would have been the time to sell. I read a lot of people got burned with this coin. They all FOMO and bought high thinking it will keep going up. They were wrong and it crashed hard. I don't think it'll get that high again. If you're making a profit I'd cash out and possibly look into another alt coin like OMG or NEM.

"It's an investment forum" - I hope that bit was a joke!
I'm wondering whether the forum needs to change its name. There's more posts about Bitcoin than anything else at the moment. Its an investment forum, art is just a byproduct as are these new coin things that the puppies are into. I'd like to get into it but don't know where to begin, plus truth be told I am a bit thick Thick and happyย "It's an investment forum" - I hope that bit was a joke!

The majority of newcomers on here seem to have more interest in pricing/making $$$ than actual appreciation of art. Would be nice if managment created a BLOCK THREAD button but he has no interest.
