Secret Santa '17 - any changes? , by Coach on Sept 28, 2017 11:11:30 GMT 1, As its now less than three months to chrimbo, and as we have to allow time for international shipping, I will soon be starting the secret Santa thread. Are we all happy with how it has been working over the last few years? Any recommendations for changes? For example, every year we have a few non-senders, which is very unfair to the recipient who will have sent a gift (though we usually try to sort something out for them). Do we want to have a minimum post requirement or minimum membership period? Sometimes recipients receive a gift which is not quite of the quality that most send (FR often jokes about flyers and SOS stickers). Should there be a minimum (or maximum) value? Any other issues? Or is it just fine as it is?

Secret Santa '17 - any changes? , by highflyer on Sept 28, 2017 12:02:14 GMT 1, Could we please set it up like UK to UK. US to US Asia to Asia Ect That way you spend less on postage and that money saved can be spent on gift. And there will be less chance of the gift getting lost or damaged. And no customs fees.
Good idea that.

Name and shame list of names and small part of address of previous timewasters in case they have started new accounts since.

Secret Santa '17 - any changes? , by Coach on Sept 28, 2017 18:37:30 GMT 1, I'm not keen on the idea of having different lists for different parts of the world. It would be more difficult to administer (though not impossible I concede). Moreover, to do so hardly adds to our inclusivity and multiculturalism. It's not that expensive to send a parcel accross the ocean. It might just dictate that you send a tube rather than a large parcel.

Secret Santa '17 - any changes? , by Coach on Sept 28, 2017 18:41:45 GMT 1, I think a minimum post count might be a good idea. I'm not concerned that members might make pointless posts to qualify. I think most that didn't send were new members who added themselves to the list, perhaps intending to partake, but then stopped posting for one reason or another. Someone who makes the effort to qualify might be more likely to send. Maybe 100 posts at date of adding their name?

Secret Santa '17 - any changes? , by Coach on Sept 28, 2017 18:44:38 GMT 1, I tend to agree with @freerange regarding minimum value. People should send what they can afford. I don't want to exclude people who might feel they can't afford to take part. However, I tend to think that unless it is genuinely all that you can afford, as a general rule sending a few stickers and flyers is likely to be falling short of the mark.

I get your point! It is recommended that you ask your recipient which artists they like, so you get a feel of their artistic taste.

Secret Santa '17 - any changes? , by turntored on Sept 28, 2017 20:58:16 GMT 1, I understand where you are coming from with the minimum post qualification Coach but at the same time if the forum is looking for new members to participate positively then perhaps it should be open to everyone?

Of course it's great when new members and lurkers start posting. There's still plenty of time for people to get to 100 posts. I'm trying to pick the lesser of two evils, and my biggest concern here is people participating not getting something sent to them. And my experience, organising this for a few years, is that those that don't send tend to be new members who stop posting before Xmas.

100 isn't set in stone. Could be 50. I'm just trying to reduce the risk of people not sending a gift by avoiding including people who never post on here.

Secret Santa '17 - any changes? , by chevyav53 on Sept 28, 2017 22:37:21 GMT 1, +1 for minimum post count/ registration date I completely understand this part but if price is reasonable I would like to participate. Possibly add a clause of those who donate to the forum as a means of authentication. Or check their previous comments to see if they fall into that, will send a rubber chicken category?

Let's just say a certain member had to create a new account for some reason. The old account had over 1,000 posts but the new one doesn't. Also if you're going by the year the account was created, that one said account was from 2012 and the new one was from 2017. And that person has participated in the past and sent quite good gifts. Does that certian person have to start over? Asking for a friend.
