How many prints should an artist release a year?, by Rouen Cathedral on Mar 8, 2018 17:18:46 GMT 1, Wonder what people think on this.
Seen Pose get slack for releasing 4 last year(I think). Now I see people saying same of Fridriks. Yet don't see many upset of Fairey releasing one a week.
So what are people's thoughts? Care to explain?

Yeah I guess price does play a big part. That may be for another thread though... Release price is instant secondary market price.

How many prints should an artist release a year?, by Art Fan 2011 on Mar 8, 2018 17:36:53 GMT 1, I would say 3 or 4 makes sense for most. Fairey is just a cash cow, you cannot blame him for knocking out prints every week when he knows that 1000`s want them, like taking candy from a kid!
Buyers want prints so give them what they want, but by doing perhaps 3-4 a year it keeps them interested and wanting more

But people do still complain about Fairy releasing too much. Agreed. Shep's prints are $45...Fridriks are ~$1k. You could buy 4-5 months worth of Shep's prints for the cost of one Fridriks. I do think the frequency of past print releases also plays a huge role though. I think the problem with Fridriks is that in the past her print releases seem to have been really spread out and then Avante released 5 prints in the past ~9 months--that's ~$5k in 9 months if you bought them all. Plus the more prints that are out there, the less money people seem willing to pay for prints on the secondary market and--as much as we'd love to think that it shouldn't matter--it definitely has an effect on whether or not people decide to purchase a print this expensive.
I'm one of the people who wishes that the releases were a bit more spaced out, but mainly because I'm a little jealous that I can't afford the new ones.

Maybe you donโt understand the goal of Shepard: cover the earth. Thatโs was the target since the beginning.

How many prints should an artist release a year?, by elberto77 on Mar 8, 2018 18:05:15 GMT 1, For me itโs all about offer and demand. If youโre a big fan of someoneโs work and you sit there on release trying to get a print you donโt want to have to wait a whole year if you miss out. So if the edition size is enough so I can get one for sure 1 a year is OK for me but if I have to be really lucky to get one I would rather have more than 1 chance every 12 months

How many prints should an artist release a year?, by Deleted on Mar 8, 2018 19:33:00 GMT 1, The question is impossible to answer as itโs homogenising a massive group. How do you even define a print? Is a Grayson Perry scarf in a box a print or what about a work with just one screen incorporated into an original work? Itโs such a broad medium.
I think the question youโre aiming to get a response to is how many prints, which are limited in number should a reasonably successful mid ranking urban or contemporary artist release at their market value before they saturate their market and damage their career? Again even thatโs practically impossible to answer. As previous posts have pointed out Faireyโs model is for everyone to have one, likewise Mr Brainwash is a kind of expensive Ikea approach to prints.
If I had to put a number, Iโd ask what does the print add to that artistโs work? For example does the print link to a new show or even a wall. Or is the print just another cash grab knocked up on photoshop.

How many prints should an artist release a year?, by ca on Mar 8, 2018 20:46:00 GMT 1, there's no real answer to this question, to me it's more to do with having a feel of your fan base and what you're trying to achieve as an artist hence the difference between Shep and others.

How many prints should an artist release a year?, by WOOF on Mar 8, 2018 20:59:57 GMT 1, As many as they want, because they're the artist. And if they need to sell prints to allow them to continue being an artist, all the more power to them.

How many prints should an artist release a year?, by h.dupa on Mar 8, 2018 21:44:43 GMT 1, Depends on multiple things.
In some cases (artist who want to keep a feeling of exclusivity) it wouldn't be smart to release more than one (small batch) print every two years.
In other cases (artist who depend a mass selling, like Fairey) one every two months can be fine.

Do you have any examples of an artist who only lists a small batch of prints once every two years?
I don't see how that is sustainable as an artist

How many prints should an artist release a year?, by soupy on Mar 8, 2018 22:02:26 GMT 1, way too many variables to answer ... it depends on:
(1) edition size of releases (2) price (3) artist fanbase / following (4) actual image / art (5) artist style / progression / themes (6) how active the artist is with new murals, exhibits, shows, fairs, etc
generally, it just boils down to supply & demand. keep enough people interested but don't oversaturate the market where there's more supply than demand. it's hard to argue with artists releasing too much when the releases sell out rather rapidly. i personally think less is better for established artists. some artists release too many meh or subpar images. prefer prints be of higher quality images that are more iconic of the artist style and a snapshot of where their work is at the time.

How many prints should an artist release a year?, by nobokov on Mar 8, 2018 22:19:07 GMT 1, I'm not sure what the purpose of the question is. How many prints should an artist release annually, to achieve what exactly? How many should they release to earn a comfortable wage? How many should they release so that the customer has a chance to purchase every print that they create without going into debt?
Is this a question about the saturation point at which demand may decrease and negatively affect the artist?

For some artists, and for that matter, some collectors, itโs not all about prints. Some artist make their living by painting or creating originals - commissions, having gallery shows or selling originals online.

How many prints should an artist release a year?, by Coach on Mar 8, 2018 23:06:17 GMT 1, I think an artist should release EXACTLY how many prints they feel like releasing every year. For some thats lots for some very few......'should'.... ptheeeh come to think of it, some artists are printmakers first and foremost..they dont create 'originals' and then sometimes make a print from it, they make original prints as their art. So in that case it should be many per year.
I donโt disagree with a word of this, and hope that you donโt think that my post was belittling the art of print making. I was responding to a particular question regarding artists who do few prints. Bottom line is itโs no oneโs place to tell an artist that they are making too many (or too few) prints.

How many prints should an artist release a year?, by Masong on Mar 8, 2018 23:19:25 GMT 1, And did this really need a poll?! Not really, but itโs interesting to see peoples expectations of an artists print releases. I personally would prefer to see quality rather than quantity but with a higher edition size so everybody gets the opportunity to own one without having to pay a premium off of somebody that has no interest in either the artist or the art.

Sure. I'd love to own originals but can't afford them of many artists. It would be a Shane for an artist to ignore a large amount of potential fans.

I agree. My question is to start some discussion which appears to have done which is good.
The question came in response to numerous posts ive seen call artists car grabbers, cash cows , etc etc. It made me wonder why such the negative comments.

My issue is the people that complain an artist is releasing too many prints because it's hurting the value of the prints they own. To them I say, deal with it. Be happy the artist has chosen to release any when they didn't need to.
