Retna’s weekend meltdowns, by nighthawk on Mar 11, 2018 22:21:49 GMT 1, Agreed. With the social media networks that many live in, every move they seem to make is documented. That being said, Retna doesn’t appear to be a “nice” man, and also seems to bring most of this upon himself. However, as was just pointed out, some of the best artists of the past would have had very similar (and as frequent) “melts”, had the internet existed.

Retna’s weekend meltdowns, by sleazus1slord on Mar 12, 2018 4:13:59 GMT 1, I met Marq in 05 when one of my crew mates was staying with him for a few weeks to paint freeway spots when that was first starting to really blow up in LA. He is totally insane and unfiltered like a lot of the most genius creative minds were throughout history. Michelangelo, Pythagoras, Van Gogh, Beethoven, O'Keefe, Goya, Dali, and countless others were at least as crazy pre-internet.
Today most artist have to run the sales customer service marketing business admin themselves through their websites and ig. Very few people have the personality type and emotional intelligence to balance unbound creativity and personal responsibility. The pressure compounds at his pay scale and work rate, triggering addiction and mental illness symptoms.
It's charming how so many of you are quick to snap judge him personally, but wouldn't let that effect your reverence for him as an artist. I'm imagining how quick you would cue up for his autograph and to tell him how great you think he is. He'll be one that is appreciated 1000x more after he dies, which won't be long at this rate.

I didn’t snap judge him. I said he was a tool and unfollowed because I couldn’t be @rsed to read the rubbish.
Admiring someone’s art is one thing. Reading b0ll0cks is another.
So it’s not ok to criticise someone who is insane and unfiltered, as long as they are high up the pay scale and creative?

Should Retna really be held in that company?
Maradona, Best and Barton were all troubled footballers but they are not the same...?!

Retna’s weekend meltdowns, by Rouen Cathedral on Mar 12, 2018 12:57:21 GMT 1, Being a 'creative genius' and having an 'unfiltered mind' is nonsense.
There are plenty of truly talented and creative artists that aren't complete jerks to support.
Forget the loser and move to someone else.
Oh and putting him in the same sentence as past great artists is hilarious

Please! ::rolls eyes:: About a year ago he had a major meltdown on Instagram. Got pissed off at another artist, and made his thoughts known to the public via Insta. This was around the same time he beat a woman. He must have used ‘fag/faggot’ at least 10 times in his rant.
I have no respect for him and, as a gay man, would never ‘line up’ for a bigots autograph.

I think you have your retna meltdowns mixed up a bit. His meltdown a year ago wasn't around the time he beat a woman, that took place years before (as was his arrest after hitting a photographer)... www.tmz.com/2015/02/10/artist-rentna-arrested-slap-photographer-brittny-gastineau/ www.tmz.com/2014/06/11/brittny-gastineau-retna-marquis-lewis-black-eye-hit-attack-domestic-violence/
let's not forget the meltdown when he went into a gallery opening and smashed up other artist's work: news.artnet.com/market/359147-retna-tantrum-359147
funny how we aren't supposed to make snap judgements (have opinions) of retna yet he shows very little respect towards others, especially other artists.

Retna’s weekend meltdowns, by Deleted on Mar 13, 2018 8:08:21 GMT 1, In the day and age of pr advisors and strategists there’s something quite refreshing about Retna’s pretty much guaranteed weekend instagram meltdowns. Looks like another one has just started. Its not refreshing its sad ass**t, he obviously has issues mental/drugs and its not pretty. Such a bellend thing to laugh at. I view it as refreshing but not laughing at it. Most so called urban artists including Banksy have meticulous pr orchestrating everything. Just look at Kaws for example to see a former street artist now living a painfully dull blue chip artist life and so far removed from why most of us started following him. Retna just does whatever he wants. He reminds me in that respect of Tino Asprilla who used to play for Newcastle and for me that’s a good thing.
In the day and age of pr advisors and strategists there’s something quite refreshing about Retna’s pretty much guaranteed weekend instagram meltdowns. Retna’s weekend meltdowns, by NYart on Mar 13, 2018 10:56:45 GMT 1, He probably is bipolar, and potentially some other mental issues than that, but there’s clearly more to it than that. The whole gay slur rant posted above; mental illness is not an excuse for. Along with which the smashing of sculptures justified by “I don’t care I can buy them” shows he knows what he is doing is wrong, yet he continues to do it. After being arrested for assault, he certainly sought treatment. Either preemptively directed by his lawyers or court ordered at sentencing, if his issues are more mental health related he’s certainly had opportunities to address them, and that’s on him.

Retna’s weekend meltdowns, by Chancho on Mar 25, 2018 6:18:15 GMT 1, Most of the time I don't understand what he's talking about, other than that it's overly aggressive. Its like he's using the English alphabet but talking in his calligraphy...

Retna’s weekend meltdowns, by kalm on Jul 8, 2018 5:14:10 GMT 1, I used to hate him...thought he was a rude doorknob....but now I like him. He’s everything ART should be IMHO. If you’re easily offended you can simply not follow him or his works. He’s a bull in a china shop.
