Drug Testing charity - fundraising thoughts please, by Deleted on Mar 20, 2018 20:32:38 GMT 1, Obviously all drugs are potentially dangerous. However the real danger is when you donโt know what your taking. Short from complications with underlying health issues, drugs shouldnโt kill you if taken in a proper dosage. If you donโt know what your taking you canโt get the dose right. Thatโs why so many people are dying from heroin laced with fentanyl. Both are opiates, both give the users what theyโre looking for, but the amount of heroin a user would take, the equivalent weight in fentanyl would kill a horse. If they had the knowledge before hand, would they still take the drugs? Most likely. But they could do it without dying at least. Especially for the events talked about here, festivals and shows, the majority are recreational users, thereโs no reason they should die because they donโt have information thatโs easy enough to find out.
I think the OPs idea can only do good, and if it was available i would advertise the fact
I have been lucky I suppose, started when I was around 14, everyone I hung around was doing the same. Typical 80's council house,s**t school, good mates and the best of times.
Never tried H, none of us did that I know of, however used to love most of the other chemicals and naturals.
Two of my oldest mates are still not quite right after over indulging in some tabs together and this still scares me.
Mainly stopped when I had kids, and haven't had any for a few years now, last time I had a smoke it knocked the stuffing out of me, so strong now, too strong, scary shit. Now I rely on alcohol for my buzz
Anyhow, I have 4 kids and I can't be hypocritical with them so when I think they need to know I have a grown up chat with them and so far so good. They ask me stuff and we have a talk.
I ask them all about the new legal highs, and we look it up these scare me more than anything I used to know about, and we learn together about these 'dirty' highs.
Education is I think where its at, and talking about it.
Years ago my wifes nan told me that she was popping pills back in the 1920s, shocked me when she told me, she was so old, couldn't believe at the time, I thought my era was the first and it was all new :-)
My memory is fucked though, I put it down to alcohol, though it could be an age thing

Drug Testing charity - fundraising thoughts please, by Pysgod on Mar 20, 2018 20:53:30 GMT 1, I recently went out to Berlin on a lads trip and was amazed that my mates would buy and eat anything and everything they could find off any tom dick or harry, some of the luminous coloured pills they were popping really made me think.

Drug Testing charity - fundraising thoughts please, by ed on Mar 20, 2018 20:57:50 GMT 1, Seems like The Loop has released details of their own crowd funding campaign, received an email this morning with the following text:
"TimeToTest Crowdfunder
crowd.science/campaigns/time-to-test/
Many of you have used our award-winning MAST service at festivals. The next step in our journey is to bring Multi Agency Safety Testing (MAST) from the fields to the cities to help reduce drug-related harm in the night time economy, as supported in recent briefings by the Royal Society for Public Health and the West Midlands Police as well as Night Lives.
Drug-related deaths in the UK are currently at record levels and nightclubs continue to close as a consequence. Ecstasy-related deaths have increased by a factor of 8 since 2010; cocaine-related deaths have tripled since 2011. Our #TimeToTest crowdfunding campaign will help us to purchase equipment to expand our pop-up labs to operate around the country in city centres, so we can deliver MAST to many more people.
To do this we need to raise a minimum of ยฃ50K to purchase state-of-the-art equipment for two more pop-up labs so that The Loop has five regional labs in total in the north, south, east, west and midlands."
I've loved reading the debate on here, and perhaps a decent conversation is enough of a positive outcome. But I'm still very keen to help The Loop meet, or even exceed, their target of ยฃ50k.
I am super niave with this kind of thing, which is why I was also asking for advice / help with contact details for people. I remember the days where I'd get a response from the @banksy.co.uk email address (I'm not setting my sights on getting a banksy ha, wishful thinking) and had really good email conversations with D*Face.
Nowadays, even though there are multiple platform method of seeing artists works, I often find it more difficult to get a response/a message seen as people must get loads.
SO, I wonder instead of trying to collect and organise an auction, whether I try and encourage artists to donate a work direct to The Loop to be added to their rewards page?
Thoughts, debate and differing opinions welcome!

Drug Testing charity - fundraising thoughts please, by NYart on Mar 20, 2018 21:07:20 GMT 1, Yeah the โlegal highsโ are a big reason why testing is important. Theyโre where people are getting themselves hurt/screwed up. Which goes along with the whole bath salts issues. Theyโre known as โResearch Chemicalsโ which is analogs of illegal drugs. Basically when one drug is outlawed the chemists tweak a molecule and it puts it in a legal gray area which is harder to enforce. The issue with this is it changes the way it interacts with and is processed by your body. One analog of ketamine may have a common dosage of 5mg while the one that came before was 20mg. So they take the dosage theyโre used to and bam, in for a bad time. People donโt lose their minds and rip someoneโs face off on โbath saltsโ because thatโs what the drug causes, itโs because there is no such thing as a drug called bath salts. People donโt know what theyโre actually taking, how much to take, or what to expect.

Drug Testing charity - fundraising thoughts please, by ed on Mar 20, 2018 21:19:52 GMT 1, NYart, absolutely. Also, the rise of 'research chemicals' and the dark net has also led to year on year increases in the quality of traditional drugs like mdma - strength of pills is now typically above what some people would see as the good old days of late 80's and early 90's.
The idea is that competition from other drugs and the ability to have Amazon style ratings of suppliers has led to producers increasing quality.
Additionally, and contrary to the above, sometimes other compounds that can feel like they're giving the same effect but have v negative, unexpected side affects are mixed in. For example, pentylone, keeping you awake in a paranoid state for upwards of 36 hours!
Its results like this that lead people to dispose rather than consume, but only if you have the availability of testing.

Drug Testing charity - fundraising thoughts please, by NYart on Mar 20, 2018 21:24:54 GMT 1, Sounds like a really good idea. The only thought I had doing it that way via the rewards page is wouldnโt that require them to set a โpriceโ for each piece? Could potentially be more successful going the auction route. That recent ecomoyo charity auction on eBay was quite successful.
Gotta figure too, thereโs a chance more artists would be willing to contribute knowing that the initiative is supported/approved by the loop as well. Rather than being done independently for the benefit of them.

Most stately homes had special opium rooms Where owners used to retreat to relax in the 1700s and 1800s Cocaine was widely used in the late 1800s early 1900s by academics and people classed of high society but is not talked about and written out of history for obvious reasons A lot of stately familyโs made a lot of money through the drug trade
Pure heroin tablets were available through nhs doctors until the 1960s

Drug Testing charity - fundraising thoughts please, by ed on Mar 20, 2018 22:58:57 GMT 1, tab1, I really appreciated you starting off the comments after my original post however I fear you might be in danger of making my point for me ๐
Nothing has ever stopped drug use / experimentation so why not do all we can to mitigate the risks, use modern tech to give individual harm reduction advice and engage with people earlier who might be on their way to drug dependence.

Usually viewed as a taboo subject , but the threads developed into a nice discussion more so than most of the trolling that happens of late on a few threads.
Think with social media and with it easier to spread awareness and knowledge , education is the key in this subject. Think the testing part would be more suitable to class a drugs of heroin and cocaine where people have a real dependency and addiction and where the most deaths occur . Where as the the club drugs of mdma etc are recreational , non dependency and education awareness would be better suited than encouragement ?a mini documentary , spread on social media would reach more people and have a greater influence with good educational informative content.
Or could just hire Rodrigo duterte at these festivals to spread the message๐๐ง

It is currently around 100. in 2005 in was nearly a thousand when the health authority at the time rolled out a national program but that was knocked on the head when a new health minister took the reins. The program wasn't stopped because it didnt work it was stopped for political reasons. Switzerland has had a national program going since 94 where the addict goes to a special room to receive there dose and also to use it with clean equipment and in the presence of trained nurses and a doctor and is on call at all opening hours. The programme has been very successful and there are some who are trying to introduce it into places like Glasgow and some northern UK cities as it has been in place in the UK since the late 90,s but only used as pilot studies in places like London, Brighton and Darlington around 2008-2009 it has proven to be successful so was extended to 2016. Its a shame when politics gets in the way of common sense. The world should look at countries like Switzerland and Portugal for the systems that really work but it seems most politicians prefer to embrace the 'Just lock, em all up' mentality. I think any system that can prevent health issues or death is a very good thing. I wish my country was more open to harm minimisation.

I ask them all about the new legal highs, and we look it up these scare me more than anything I used to know about, and we learn together about these 'dirty' highs. Education is I think where its at, and talking about it. Years ago my wifes nan told me that she was popping pills back in the 1920s, shocked me when she told me, she was so old, couldn't believe at the time, I thought my era was the first and it was all new :-) My memory is fucked though, I put it down to alcohol, though it could be an age thing Most stately homes had special opium rooms Where owners used to retreat to relax in the 1700s and 1800s Cocaine was widely used in the late 1800s early 1900s by academics and people classed of high society but is not talked about and written out of history for obvious reasons A lot of stately familyโs made a lot of money through the drug trade Pure heroin tablets were available through nhs doctors until the 1960s www.bl.uk/romantics-and-victorians/articles/representations-of-drugs-in-19th-century-literatureThe problem has always been no body uses in moderation and eventually becomes a problem Herion (Diamorphine hydrochloride) is still prescribed for a small amount of addicts in the UK.

Drug Testing charity - fundraising thoughts please, by Carl Cashman on Mar 21, 2018 8:27:10 GMT 1, No, Carl. I don't. Or does that 1 beer a month make me a hypocrite now? No, so maybe hold back on being so defensive ?
Just be thankful you can drink knowing your tipple of choice has been tested and proven safe to consume and that your drug of choice has been deemed ok to take.. no matter how many lives it ruins on a daily basis.

I couldn't care less if alcohol was banned as well. Good riddens then when it kills so many people. Saying using drugs is okay, because alcohol is legal is Trump logic. (here's your cue, blanksy) You are basicly undermining your own logic; alcohol is deemed okay and has been tested, yet it kills many on a daily basis. What does that say about testing pills?
Surely we all agree we don't want dead kids. But being killed by pills, needles or drinking (or drunk driving) doesn't make much difference.
So what do you suggest, Carl? Legalise and test all heroin and cocaรฏne as well? Crack at Tesco ? So your drug of choice is tested and proven safe to consume....

Drug Testing charity - fundraising thoughts please, by Happy Shopper on Mar 21, 2018 12:20:25 GMT 1, I would have thought it would be impossible for clubs in the UK to have in house drug testing, because that would be them acknowledging illegal drug taking on the premises. They'd get shut down.

They'd get shut down. Uk festivals have started with great results. Statistics are hard for stuff like this though as 'statistically' someone is going to pass away if 250'000 people are in a space for 7 days. Im sure most towns of 250000 people would experience at least 1 death over a weekend. It's certainly a good idea. And better than having nothing. But the government would have to acknowledge and accept class A drug taking. They sort of did when they made clubs give free water, but actually testing the drug people are taking is a step to legalisation... can't see it being allowed. How do festivals swing it with the police? Or do they just not tell the police what they're doing?

I thought my suggestion was to test them, not some moronic tesco tripe. You have a preconseption that doesnt allow a sensible discussion so its pointless trying to converse. Well done, Carl. You can't win a discussion, so you just call someone who disagrees with you a moron.
You contradict yourself, so what arguments do you bring forward?
I asked you some rather simple questions, which you apparantly are not able to answer. So who is not open to a discussion?

Oh, this is full knowledge of police. In fact, in some areas, police are thoroughly in support of it. It is an odd situation I agree, searches on entry still take place with confiscations but also a stall that is full of people in possession of drugs.
Lots of work has been done over the years to break down the stigma and inconsistency of arguement around drugs so I guess it's the shifting from ideology (some people would say law ha) to practicality.
Perhaps it's because a lot of police think that pursuing drug use as a criminal justice matter isnt effective or based on evidence and should be treated with a public health response, but tend to only say it when they're retired.

Drug Testing charity - fundraising thoughts please, by ed on Mar 21, 2018 13:13:54 GMT 1, Dive Jedi Carl Cashman...I'd recommend a short period of couples counselling, perhaps mdma assisted - increased empathy, more able to discuss difficult things without feeling difficult feelings
www.wsj.com/articles/how-mdma-went-from-club-drug-to-breakthrough-therapy-1508332237
Group hug?
I'd also much prefer locally sourced crack, perhaps from my local deli rather than Tesco, reminds me of that horse meat scandal, who knows what they'd put in it
(Ps, I don't do crack ๐ I'm just trying to make jokes to stop mum and dad fighting)

Drug Testing charity - fundraising thoughts please, by mojo on Mar 21, 2018 13:20:06 GMT 1, With respect the thread title is asking for fundraising idea's not personal opinions on drugs. And I wasn't taking the p!ss when I suggested putting on a rave, it makes perfect sense to me. Find a location, call up some well known rave dj's and get their support, sell tickets through social media for ยฃ20 each, get Carl to paint the backdrops, since he's already offered to help and his work is perfect for a this and with a little bit of luck you'll raise the money The Loop need to update the testing kits as well as publicize a very progressive idea that will no doubt save many lives and keep people safe. Remember no Glastonbury this year! There's a Gap in the market

Drug Testing charity - fundraising thoughts please, by Dive Jedi on Mar 21, 2018 13:53:51 GMT 1, Well done, Carl. You can't win a discussion, so you just call someone who disagrees with you a moron. You contradict yourself, so what arguments do you bring forward? I asked you some rather simple questions, which you apparantly are not able to answer. So who is not open to a discussion? Dude what is your problem ? Any time you interact with me on any social media platform you get pissy... you even have the cheak to post on my pages that my work iss**t and get upset when I returned the favour. I didnt call you a moron, just that your interpretation of what I typed was moronic... you know the whole trump crap thats completely irrelevant to what I said ? Best bet is to ignore and/or block eachothers posts/accounts moving forward. I'm not blocking anyone. It's an open forum.
Aahh, still upset about that, Carl? I'm sorry. Didn't mean to hurt your feelings. As you well know I didn't say "your work is sh!t". I think most of your work is great. In fact I own a couple of your prints, as you might recall. Spraying the C-word on a shiny piece of paper is sh!t, in my humble opinion. You can do a lot better. But let's get back on topic!
I actually agree with you on the testing. Common practice in NL for many years. So rather surprised this is actually an issue in UK.
I'm just wondering where you draw the line.
You say : Alcohol is legal and tested, yet it kills many people every day. My question: So how will testing pills prevent people from being killed? Maybe 1 pill is safe - sure the average idiot will take 3 then. It's safe after all. Pills are produced by criminals. They might add strychnine to pills to add to the experience. Will pills be tested for that? Or only on MDMA levels?
So people take pills. Let's test them.
People take heroin too. Why not test that? I don't see the difference. Should heroin users not be safe? Or crack heads ?
So when we are on the subject of checking everyone's drug of choice as you put it, why not legalise it all and make sure it's all safe. Take it out of the criminal circuit, so production is safe. Then you can tax it as well, to fund prevention and education. Crack at Tesco. The safe alternative. Not so moronic, I think.....

Drug Testing charity - fundraising thoughts please, by ed on Mar 21, 2018 14:08:22 GMT 1, Oh Dive Jedi, you give with one hand and take away with another.
Yes! Test everything as often as possible. Heroin is cut with fentanyl sometimes which is super deadly which might partly explain rises in drug related deaths year on year.
Even better, decriminalise drugs.
Even better, legalise, regulate and tax them all in my opinion! Regulation doesn't necessarily mean a free for all, regulation could mean incredibly strict control.
But this risks taking the thread off on a different path....a bit like taking a pop at someone for an issue started outside of this thread
