Contemporary Art Day Auction by Sotheby's, by irl1 on Jun 27, 2018 15:28:48 GMT 1, ------------ Very surprised at the low Banksy print results yesterday in Forum Auctions. How popular are there auctions usually ? None of the Warhols did very well either, all 3 soup cans went unsold. I thought with the amount of Banksy works in it that there would be lots of bidders.

Contemporary Art Day Auction by Sotheby's, by Graham H on Jun 27, 2018 15:41:03 GMT 1, I think the reason those Warhols didnt sell is because trhey were outside the edition and unsigned.. but with the same estimate as signed pieces have ben listed up at
Signed edition v unsigned but stamped out of edition.. I would say there would always be a disparity in pricing.. just dont think the auction house thought that way

Contemporary Art Day Auction by Sotheby's, by irl1 on Jun 27, 2018 16:04:32 GMT 1, Its very hard to gauge the price on these originals. Size did not matter here.
Banksy, Angel, 125.50 X 155 cm, sells for 393,000 (not sure if this is with fees)
Banksy, Keep it real, 20.2 X 20 cm, sells for 418,00 (including fees)

Contemporary Art Day Auction by Sotheby's, by Dice on Jun 27, 2018 17:26:56 GMT 1, That auction result on the tiny banksy must be a typo surely. You have pretty much any banksy you want at that price I wouldn't of believed it either but I watched it live. It was quite the battle.
Imagine the look on the buyers face when it arrives in a jiffy bag instead of a massive crate.
The monkey image has sold many times at much larger sizes for much much less. This is crazy.

Contemporary Art Day Auction by Sotheby's, by Graham H on Jun 27, 2018 18:42:36 GMT 1, No worries.. I wasnโt trying to be a smart arse btw.. if it came across like that I apologise
It wouldnโt have been beyond the realms of possibility that people wanting to buy didnโt do their homework and hadnโt realised ( which could have been what the auction house was hoping ) and kept bidding not realising.. and ended up paying as much as signed anyway..

Contemporary Art Day Auction by Sotheby's, by moron on Jul 2, 2018 11:26:13 GMT 1, I heard a funny story about Sothebys a few days ago care to share? The story that I was told is that alledgedly about ten or more years ago, some items that people had bought at sothebys new york had been replaced by fakes after the sale by people alledgedly working for sothebys.
Also someone alledgedly put a valuable item (furniture) into the auction with an agreed reserve valued by the auction house and the item was auctioned for a quarter of it's estimated value at below half the agreed reserve price. The owner kicked up a fuss and the auction house said thats what it made. The owner replied that he had attended the sale on the day and he did not see his item auctioned. The allegation was that the item was bought before the sale by someone working at Sothebys.
would be interesting if anyone recalls any shenanigans like this reported in the news at the time.

That is all complete BS. However I can tell you that about 20 years ago a Lucian Freud was put into the garbage disposal in London and crushed into pulp. The porters thought the crate it was in was empty but it wasn't and it got squished.

I heard similar rumours about Bonhams a few years ago.
I'm not judging the sale rooms, just think sometimes people they employ can be less than honest and also work with certain dealers.

Lots of things going on in the shadows with B and auctions. This painting is tiny and shouldnโt have gone for so high. It could be that the owner is tight and close to source so it was bid up.

Likely bid up as a favor to the owner. Banksyโs studio probably bids up certain works and buys them back to preserve/drive up prices.
