martin creed unique vinyl less than 100 quid, by avec art on Dec 21, 2018 18:13:36 GMT 1, if the image is naff (something I wouldn't disagree with), then how is it a bargain, the prestige of the artist?
surely it becomes just a (circle jerk) cycle then, that people think whatever the person does is great simply because they've reached prestige status.

martin creed unique vinyl less than 100 quid, by Deleted on Dec 21, 2018 18:19:47 GMT 1, You can dislike the image and still think 100 pounds for a signed limited edition print by a highly regarded artist is cheap, can't you?
I'd love to own a print by Martin Creed, but I won't be buying this one.

martin creed unique vinyl less than 100 quid, by avec art on Dec 21, 2018 18:41:43 GMT 1, I know he is highly regarded by people, and Martin Creed seems like a really nice and funny guy. But I don't highly regard a lot of the artwork he produces, presenting us with the philosophical process of categorisation. You can see why he's a darling of the art establishment elites. So I'm not sure how I feel about it entirely. I enjoy how he appears to mock the art world .. that I like. But I don't want to be one of the ones he's laughing at by selling me a screwed up ball of paper or a broccoli print.

martin creed unique vinyl less than 100 quid, by chuckle on Dec 22, 2018 8:46:43 GMT 1, If you are sitting on the fence, time to make up your mind as there are only a couple left. Mine arrived yesterday, it is a nice little print. Ticks off a Martin Creed shaped hole in the collection, particularly as it references a couple of key themes from his work, and doesnโt cost 4 figures!

martin creed unique vinyl less than 100 quid, by avec art on Dec 22, 2018 10:36:14 GMT 1, the Western system of classification with its roots in Ancient Greece was widely used by Colonial powers as evidence of their innate superiority and consequently used as excuse to 'educate' other 'less advanced' cultures around the world, often with devastating brutality and cruelty. It might be more than mere coincidence that the old guard of the establishment hold in such high esteem artists who celebrate such ideas, even if the artist is unaware or shares no part in the abuse of such power.

He is one of those artists that it is easy to mock. I guess it all depends on how one looks at things. Creed is a conceptual artist. It's more about the thought behind the art rather than the aesthetics of art itself - and he seems to have a lot of thoughts. I quite like that. In an age of instagram and instant gratification, I rather like art that you don't get an instant hit within 2 seconds of looking at it. I think there's a lot to be said for what I call 'slow art'.

martin creed unique vinyl less than 100 quid, by avec art on Dec 22, 2018 11:40:11 GMT 1, Was I mocking him ... um I don't think so. I'm trying get across a suggestion as to why he is so highly regarded by the art establishment. As to why the basis of his general concepts have been so embraced by them. I don't think I've really gone much into the aesthetics as it's the ideas themselves I am concerned with. If you take the trouble to read the post after the one which you quoted @markiemark you may have a better idea what I'm talking about. Not all ideas are 'beautiful' Gentle Mental what happens when you take forms of classification to extremes, when you begin to classify human beings and claiming it a science. Let's not be too quick to forget our collective histories and how much of Western wealth was once attained. Did those in power ever let go of it, or a continuation with a redressed narrative. Dig a little and you can sometimes find ideas beneath ideas.

martin creed unique vinyl less than 100 quid, by Deleted on Dec 22, 2018 11:54:29 GMT 1, First of all, let me say I know you wasn't mocking Creed. I never said you were. All I was saying is that if one doesn't like conceptual art (and loads of people don't) then it is easy to mock the guy. I'm not sure why you are suddenly talking about "our collective histories". Of course we (as in the Western world) uphold classical Greece and it's artistic achievements and, in my opinion, quite rightly so. But I don't see Martin Creed particularly following that tradition. In fact he is probably one of the least influenced by the Western Classical tradition out of all the artists discussed on these forums.

martin creed unique vinyl less than 100 quid, by Gurn on Dec 22, 2018 12:20:22 GMT 1, This was an easy purchase for me. I was blown away by his room at Tate Britain last week. The print gives a nod to other works and is of a size I am looking for; plus all unique. I bet it'll look great on my 'music' wall once framed.

martin creed unique vinyl less than 100 quid, by avec art on Dec 22, 2018 12:25:02 GMT 1, I mentioned collective histories, as many atrocities of colonialism and later the slave trade were carried out with the use of pseudo scientific methods of human classification, this in itself was an extension of a particular method of classification so closely adopted. Much of the wealth in the West was achieved through exploitation and at the expense of other cultures (perhaps still so). Manual labour was outsourced to people considered inferior and enshrined in law by the establishment of the time. It can be argued that the structures in place which allowed such events to happen are still the same structures albeit with a different veneer.
I'm proposing the hypothesis that art can be a powerful tool, and has always been used as such, and that the art establishment today, the turner prize people et all, are patsy or party to those same age old political power structures and as such like to choose art which represents the values they cling to. Claiming them to be radical and challenging boundaries, when in fact just singing off the same old hymn sheet, and simply reinforcing the status quo.
Perhaps I'm raising a number of issues here which go well beyond the questioning of a single artist. If you read what I've said I've not criticised him once (and I know art critique often doesn't go down well here) but questioned the reason why he was adopted and put on a pedestal by those who can choose whose voice is heard and whose is not.

martin creed unique vinyl less than 100 quid, by Gentle Mental on Dec 22, 2018 17:35:14 GMT 1, Ah yes the west was terrible. But bits were ok. Things were invented lives were saved wars slavery exploitation medicine and tech. Money money money zen. Whatever. As it is with all civilisations.
There is no emperorโs new clothes to call out. Some people just like to see stupid kings naked.
Lights turning on and off is an amazing piece of art. In so many ways. Even the news of it winning is fascinating and pleasurable.

martin creed unique vinyl less than 100 quid, by avec art on Dec 22, 2018 18:01:24 GMT 1, I also like work no.227 from the year he won the Turner prize. But it doesn't hurt me to question the meaning behind an artists body of work, and who it actually is who has decided to support them and why. After all isn't that what much of what he does ... inviting the viewer to question their experience.
edit: plus I never said or implied the Emperor wears no clothes, they're very fine clothes indeed. I was questioning who put the crown on his head.

martin creed unique vinyl less than 100 quid, by robo on Dec 22, 2018 23:28:34 GMT 1, I loved this piece as soon as I saw it so was a no brainer (and glad I got it in time). But then Iโve always been a fan of drum machines. It links smartly to the themes in lots of his other pieces including primary palettes, repetition and variation, metronomy, simplicity in creation, sequences, etc.
I do also really like the broccoli print.
I donโt think heโs insulting his audience at all with these works. I think heโs exploring what the creative act is and what an artwork can be, and finding beauty in unusual places. Heโs sometimes an algorthmical artist like Sol Lewitt.
I am curious to see the print now. How different are they? Perhaps there are random colour variations. And how big is it - I guess 7โ but listing doesnโt say.
