Bad Dealing with Artist, by Iqra'a on Jan 8, 2019 23:03:45 GMT 1, Hey guys,
I'm sorry for having to create a whole new thread for this, but I hadn't found any discussions about straight bad experiences working directly with artists. This will be a little long, so I apologize for that as well.
So this happened quite a while ago (September 2017) and am bringing this up now because I only just remembered it and felt the need to vent and warn potential collectors who like to scavenge for new artists on social media.
An Italy-based artist that I follow named Patrick Eduardo made a few small, affordable pieces available for sale in September 2017 and one of them caught my eye. I reached out directly via IG messages and we exchanged PayPal details. A week after, he claims to have mailed the piece. A few weeks go by and nothing arrives. When I ask for an update he said that the post office in Switzerland was holding it for a few weeks now and hasn't moved (according to tracking details that he wouldn't provide me). He then says that he'll wait another few weeks and if it doesn't move then he'll request for it to be sent back and resend it with another courier. At this point, I was quite annoyed for the delay but at the same time I was sure he was just as frustrated as I was and I've experienced international shipping being weird before.
So I wait a month and ask for another follow up. He comes back and says he requested it to be sent back. It then supposedly arrives a few days later back at his studio and claimed that it also now had a "Quarantine" sticker on it. We both thought it was weird but he said he would just get a new box and ship it again soon.
A month goes by, dead silence. Fast forward to May 2018, I follow up again and nothing (note, this is all happening while he is frequently updating his IG account and responding to comments. So clearly, I was just being ghosted). I've been emailing and private messaging him directly every month or so until I realized it was a lost cause (gave up on September 2018, the anniversary of this all). Sent a final email stating my disappointment and hoped he would have a change of heart. Nothing yet as of this post.
Couple of things to mention:
(1) I frequently (i mean very frequently) purchase directly from artists using social media and I make it a point to get pieces by amateur or new artists. I love supporting new talent when I can and almost always pay extra and as a "gift" on PayPal because I know how every dollar counts for new artists. The best part is seeing them develop their style and manage to grow their following and ultimately become more active in the art scene.
(2) This artist in particular was a calligraphy artist and for those who know me, I'm big on supporting calligraphy work. This guy was very early in his career in art and I was very much hoping that I would be able to help another new calligraphy artist enter the scene. But unfortunately, it seems I have simply financially supported an immoral individual that may steal from another collector in the future.
Now I've had too many good experiences before and after this incident to make me stray away from supporting new artists. Frankly, I dont think anything will. But it was definitely a little reality check for me.
For those curious, here is his IG account
I hope no one here experiences what I have and wish you all a great new year full of new art!
All the best, Iqraa

How did you resist flaming his IG account? Iโd have thought a few well-chosen comments might have prompted a change of attitude.
Did he keep your money?

If Iqra'a wants to make sure the artist receives the full payment it would be advised to make a normal payment and add 4% for PayPal fees.
But I guess usually all goes well, so we forget it might go bad sometimesโฆ.

Not sure this works, as the IG acct holder I'm sure you can delete comments?

A lot of new calligraphy artists tend to mimic 3-4 main artists: Pokras, ElSeed, Retna, Cryptik (just off the top of my head). Which of course is fine to be "inspired" but at least credit your inspiration you know? Not many do that.

But in some cases, I've had international artists lose a bit down the line come tax season. So I try to be fair and pay the difference when taxes kick in as well.

Bad Dealing with Artist, by Deleted on Jan 9, 2019 16:02:12 GMT 1, I always think it is incredibly sad when artist don't care about the very people who support them and buy their art, particularly with up and coming artists who do not have much of a fan base to start with.
This guy could have easily refunded your money with very little loss on his part. It seems some people just don't give a damn.

Bad Dealing with Artist, by dotdot on Jan 9, 2019 18:28:11 GMT 1, yeah I've had the same of of cac going on with a fairly reputable artist for the past > 2 years.
for now.. i've given up.
couldn't care less if something shows up or not - the relationship is 'trashed'.
why do people do that ? well tis an oft used term , as with moped riders.. there's a lot of good ones.. it's the neds who ruin it for everyone else.
there will always be one or two .. who ruin it - and keep it edgy.. yeah right , F R O in my book.
btw : moped rider | cyclist | driver | ebay seller | artist , given mopeds are a touchy subject in londres.

I really don't know what he can do at this point though. The more I think about it, I agree with d.r. perseus and think that I wouldn't want anything by the artist on my wall to constantly remind me of this.

Bad Dealing with Artist, by Mirus Gallery on Jan 10, 2019 1:36:59 GMT 1, Looks like he ripped off Pokras Lampas as well as your self Yes - he definitely takes inspiration from popular artists. A lot of new calligraphy artists tend to mimic 3-4 main artists: Pokras, ElSeed, Retna, Cryptik (just off the top of my head). Which of course is fine to be "inspired" but at least credit your inspiration you know? Not many do that. I don't see the reference to these artists, but it is definitely influenced by Zepha. I would go for the refund as well, good luck.
