Eddie Martinez Drawings 2 Limited Edition , by ca on Oct 9, 2020 21:49:01 GMT 1, this guy has no clue and is filled with hate. The initial version of the article when it came out made reference to EM using projectors to do his paintings... which anyone that has slightly followed his work would know is ridiculous. I'm not against people being critical of someone's work but this is a rant by a sad person

The flowers/pots image? Or something else?

Maybe that projector comment was an inaccuracy and Edward threatened to sue, so got retracted? Happens all the time. What other parts can you categorically say are 'filled with hate'? Critical, yes, but hate, just because they have a differing opinion?
'Eddie's' prices are artificially inflated. He adds nothing new to the dialogue that is a poor man's pastiche of guston, basquiat etc, but not as good and no backstory.

'Eddie's' prices are artificially inflated. He adds nothing new to the dialogue that is a poor man's pastiche of guston, basquiat etc, but not as good and no backstory. My main point was that if someone makes such an ignorant statement (using a projector) then I have a hard time taking the rest seriously. It's not a small detail, we all know how much of an insult it can be to a painter and it's especially wrong when you spend 5min looking at EM's work.
Regarding recent auction results, he's not exactly a new kid on the block... There could be and some might have manipulated prices recently but with the amount of work he has produced relative to what is hitting auction, I'm not seeing an Amoako Boafo type of scenario. He has a lot of fans/collectors and the Asian market has also recently started getting into his work hence the higher demand.
As far as what his work means, I find it funny you refer to Guston. When he was alive and working most people discarded his work as irrelevant and having no historical significance until late in his life and especially after his death. (Basquiat, I won't even touch, it's so boring and lazy as a reference IMO)
I could tell you what his work means to me but not sure you're looking for that, it seems the author and yourself want an art history PHD to confirm what "good art" should be and that's not what I personally look for in art. To each their own

Eddie Martinez Drawings 2 Limited Edition , by josie on Oct 10, 2020 5:21:40 GMT 1, I guess the projector comment came from the fact that EM uses enlarged screen prints of his drawings as a base to start some of his paintings.

Eddie goes through cycles of his subject matter; sleepers, tabletops, blockheads, flowers, abstracts. Your best bet is to find a piece that encompasses a few of these motifs.

Eddie Martinez Drawings 2 Limited Edition , by Reader on Oct 10, 2020 9:33:56 GMT 1, Just scrolled through his whole body of work and have to say....he's simply not very good. Average at best. Occasionally hits when he drifts into Basquiat mode, but I suspect the colour and forms are just directly lifted, so feels a bit flat. Not pure enough to be "outsider", and not schooled enough to be relevant in contemporary. This leaves the commercial market, where he seems to fit into that kind of LA "zombie abstraction", without monied dealers and their networks, and taken on its own merits, this work simply doesn't have the depth needed to have any sort of impact beyond a small base already invested in his work. You could pick thousands doing similar work. Cool if you have the $ and you like it. But not something to invest too much energy in. It can't be talked up beyond where it's at. And where it's at, is "average at best". In my humble opinion of course.

Well articulated. He simply won't stand the test of time or be relevant with any sort of historical longevity to be mentioned in the same breath as the real greats.

He does have a good few institutional shows under his belt. He needs to produce some new work, he is recycling continuously what he did 15 years ago. I wouldnโt write him off just yet, maybe a more tasteful direction is needed and not to be placed next to toys etc.
