Shipping Art โข UK, USA, Asia, Europe, by twist65 on Aug 6, 2012 10:57:14 GMT 1, if its an original piece of artwork a lot of couriers won't touch it. special delivery royal mail has pretty restrictive sizes so anything above that goes to Parcel Force, and there are cheaper/better alternatives to that but its just a case of shopping around. I did use a company once who specialise in transporting original works of art and they were surprisingly cost effective, will try and dig out their invoice as can't remember what they were called...
... failing that you can't beat a man with a van!!!

Shipping Art โข UK, USA, Asia, Europe, by firstwords on Aug 6, 2012 14:50:09 GMT 1, Firstly, pack it yourself. 2 pieces of plywood then loads of bubble wrap around it. Bind it all together with at least 1 roll of parcel tape, first one way(width) and then the other(length).
Then use parcel2go.com.
Easy.

Shipping Art โข UK, USA, Asia, Europe, by Warm Gun on Aug 6, 2012 18:27:19 GMT 1, Flight Logistics won't pack it for you but they do accept any size canvas and are very resonable cost wise. Whenever I'be bought a large canvas they've been wrapped in layers of bubble wrap, a thick layer of card each side and placed in a canvas shaped box. I've never had a problem with that. Plywood would be even better!

Dead right there. Saying that I think FL charge for dimensions rather than weight. (worth checking that though)

Yeah, I know from a few small pieces I have received in the past, that it's amazing how heavy a couple of bit of hardboard can be

Shipping Art โข UK, USA, Asia, Europe, by me7777 on Aug 6, 2012 20:49:20 GMT 1, I recently bought a large canvas and was very shocked when it arrived by parcel force with just one layer of bubble wrap round it. Delivery driver was extra careful because he could see what it was. Having had a few other items well packed arrive damaged with holes in the packing and covered in footprints it might be a strange but sensible option lol!

I used Flight Logistics for a framed print, they picked it up, packed and shipped it. no problems at all. of course everthing has a cost but I don't see why they wouldn't pack a canvas.

Aggreed, take the canvas off it's frame, roll it up and tube it. The buyer will most likely pay less to have it professionally stretched then shipping by crate.

Shipping Art โข UK, USA, Asia, Europe, by Rsyok on May 13, 2013 11:06:57 GMT 1, I just checked Royal Mail are still 90cm limit on special delivery. You can always cut down your tube (not with the print in!). Parcel to go is good but no insurance for art.

Prob is with the diameter of the tube limit being 70mm... always risky wedging / rolling something that tightly I feel.. unless anyone has any other options..
Just been stung on sending a couple of prints in 90mm dia tubes abroad.. the difference from Special delivery to Global Value / express is massive!

Shipping Art โข UK, USA, Asia, Europe, by Deleted on May 15, 2013 17:50:40 GMT 1, Hi,
Anyone got any experience with this? I might be sending a framed Dolk to France and just wondered who to use.
Ideally someone who does actually treat things with care (print is expensive!) and will treat it much better than Royal Mail do with their domestic post !!
The frame is around 67cm x 67cm plus lots of bubble wrap, cardboard etc so this could end up being fairly big so I'm not expecting this to be cheap!!

Shipping Art โข UK, USA, Asia, Europe, by skitchy on May 15, 2013 20:08:43 GMT 1, had some success with this recently...make sure you stick multiple lines of packaging tape to the glass to prevent shattering/damage to print, lots of bubble wrap and find a suitable box. Also it is cheaper/faster if you use a company like DHL instead of post office- sent a large frame to the states in under 4 days!

Ok cheers I'll have a look at DHL. I've looked at FedEx and been quoted about ยฃ100 for a standard service.

Shipping Art โข UK, USA, Asia, Europe, by spirit on May 15, 2013 21:50:47 GMT 1, Make sure you read the small print - works of art valued at over ยฃ125 or so are prohibited items with most of the regular couriers - some wont carry them at all and I doubt any of them will insure it for loss or damage.
As charlie said, speak to Steve at Flight Logistics. They are used to shipping art and will be able to insure it.
