CHRIS STAIN hand-cut stencils NOW AVAILABLE, by slowmo on Mar 31, 2008 18:39:24 GMT 1, Isn' this a bit like Nick Hornby selling his old pc? They look nice, but they are a tool to make art? Don't really get it

CHRIS STAIN hand-cut stencils NOW AVAILABLE, by Ad Hoc Art on Mar 31, 2008 18:44:09 GMT 1, Chris Stain has had several inquiries asking if he had any plans of making his original stencils available for purchase, so he thought he would make a few available. We understand it's not for everyone. Thanks.

CHRIS STAIN hand-cut stencils NOW AVAILABLE, by seidbereit on Mar 31, 2008 21:17:40 GMT 1, Quite like them but the prices seem to be a bit, well, ridiculous, for want of a better word.
I like the Nick Hornby's PC analogy, slowmo.

CHRIS STAIN hand-cut stencils NOW AVAILABLE, by skelly on Apr 1, 2008 3:47:05 GMT 1, This is completely different....if these are hand cut stencils, I can see why some would be interested. Not for me, but if you like a particular piece to own the original stencil signed from the artist could be nice

CHRIS STAIN hand-cut stencils NOW AVAILABLE, by Ad Hoc Art on Apr 1, 2008 6:09:23 GMT 1, Honestly, most artists who work in stencil don't usually make their original hand cuts available. These are beautiful in real life, signed by the artist...one of a kind, framed and behind glass. It was difficult to decide on pricing but since these are the one of a kind hand cut stencils, a couple of which are very famous images for Stain, I don't think they are that out of range. Several editions of prints and one-of pieces have been made from these...but these are the original hand cut stencils that everything else came from. And they truly are lovely in real life.

Hi Andrew,
don't get me wrong I totally rate Chris's work and truly count myself very lucky to have two of the metal pieces which came from that series of stencils (though you don't have exact stencils for either of my pieces on offer), but the price of the stencils surely shouldn't be several times more expensive than the pieces were which were produced using them.
Take for example the N9th street piece on metal shown in pic no. 5 on your gallery - that costs $600 and is another typically lovely piece of Chris's work, however by your logic the stencil which produced it would cost 5 times as much but (now by applying my logic) in itself doesn't really give you any of the feel of the art work.
The idea of selling the stencils is really great though, I wish other artists would do it more often and I would dearly love to have one, as it's (or would be if they were affordable) a really lovely and very unusual piece to own - I keep thinking of Harveyn's fatanstic set of three Borf stencils, lucky beggar - but these are tiny in comparison and I just can't justify the price to myself (framed or not) regardless of how much I'd love one - I think the same applies to a lot of other people.
I understand you're free to price them however you see fit and don't want to be overly-critical or to hound you about the pricing as a) it's not really my place to be and b) there are plenty of galleries whose sole interest appears to be to just squeeze the maximum possible out of their customers and are more deserving of concerted ridicule and hounding (and I don't include you in that group in any way - your pricing is otherwise always entirely fair), but it does seem a shame that these are so far out of reach and so far out of balance with the prices of the pieces themselves.
Best of luck all the same. I shall look with extreme envy as these go to very rich homes.

CHRIS STAIN hand-cut stencils NOW AVAILABLE, by Ad Hoc Art on Apr 1, 2008 15:43:09 GMT 1, I was not aware that Stain had tried to sell these before through another gallery. But undderstand that after that show Stain had a show with Swoon and the Polaroid Kidd in France which almost completely sold out and drove Stain's prices up. I see that the stencils were listed around $1800 something. As his prices have gone up, I will mark them for sale at $2000, just to be fair since he did try to sell them before at similar prices. I want to be fair. Also, understand that his new works for now selling for $1000-$1200 for originals. The piece for $600 was an edition.

CHRIS STAIN hand-cut stencils NOW AVAILABLE, by seidbereit on Apr 1, 2008 16:15:38 GMT 1, So are those the same stencils or different ones? The sizes are different (but that may be down to stating the framed size rather than the stencil). Enough's been said already but I still don't understand the logic in the stencil being more expensive than the piece it was used for, whether it's twice as much or five times as much. It doesn't make sense. Ah well.

CHRIS STAIN hand-cut stencils NOW AVAILABLE, by nacional on Apr 1, 2008 16:49:41 GMT 1, Apart from fact that price is way too high, and it reeks of squeezing the lemon dry and then flogging the dead horse (to mix metaphores) for me the bottom line is that the images are dull: dull as in boring. Whilst I understand that the subject matter is meant to be "depression" esque, who really wants a stencil of a dreary looking old dear called "Emma" on their wall, even if it is lovingly framed.
Anyway, good luck with the sale.
Now, if Hutch would sell his stencil of Rollergirl, or just of Rollergirl's knickers nestling around her ankles, NOW WE'RE TALKING.........

CHRIS STAIN hand-cut stencils NOW AVAILABLE, by Ad Hoc Art on Apr 1, 2008 17:55:16 GMT 1, Chris Stain original works at the same size as the stencils go for between 1000-1200...maybe a little more or less depending on the amount of work in each piece. His editions of 10 or so go for between $500-600. The stencils are now on listed at $2000 each. I can't go any lower than $2000 for original handcut stencils, signed by the artist, framed behind glass. Hope this price change helps. Thanks.

CHRIS STAIN hand-cut stencils NOW AVAILABLE, by reznyce on Apr 2, 2008 0:27:47 GMT 1, I think they're great. I just can't afford them. I'm sure someone will. This conversation is interesting. Most critics here would not hesitate to pay $3,000 for a print just because it's hot on ebay. Chris is a unique street artist imo. There is a level of maturity about his work that is lacking in many of the other so called "urban" artists who preach social justice one day and do a design for Nike or some other corporation the Next. Chris Stain's work is both interesting and educational. Just in case anyone is wondering, I own a couple of his prints and one of the small editions on metal. I would like to see more artists like Chris who use "street art" to promote progressive ideals. Andrew, mad props to you for promoting Chris Stain's work and respect to Ad Hoc. Great luck to you and the gallery.
