Being totally anonymous is a negative as people are nervous to invest large amounts of money into an artist who might not actually even exist, but itโs a positive in that an artists lifestyle or political views could limit his appeal to a percentage of the population.
I think itโs best to be public, but keep your views and private life as private as possible.
What do you think?
I think mostly itโs best for an artist to be somewhere in the middle.

I think they would if he started to appear openly at his events, did a few tv interviews and went to other artists Gallery events. I just wonder if Banksy might miss the freedom of going to events without some sort of disguise? |

Obviously they're everywhere now because street art requires anonymity and since then a huge chunk of the art world is influenced by the trends from that movement.
I think it's benefitted Kaws to drop his anonymity but retain the moniker, but I think that's specifically because of how he's connected himself to celebrity culture.
I will say I think a huge amount of art relies on context, and this can include an understanding of the life of the artist. Knowing about Cy Twombly's life puts his art in a new light when viewing it. Having said that I think you can look at a Van Gogh and get everything you need from the painting without any prior knowledge of the artist.

Banksy's anonymity is a bit different. He had to be anonymous as what he was doing was illegal.
Today you have artists that ignore copyright and so do that under a psudonym. Others just do it as they don't want to be known. They may be shy or their art subject might cause issues with their full time career.
Banksys anonymity fuels his pr and his unique usp. Why change it.
You need to build a brand beit a psudonym or your name. I do think it also relates to the style of art you are creating. There's still a lot of snobbishness in art.

Which basicly means you can't write political slogans and such.
I've painted illegal pieces as well, but on an abandoned light house building.
Then they basicly don't care.

My understanding is that as long as you dont get caught in the act you are fine.
I have also heard that for graffiti, they will photograph and catalog the tags. So when you do get caught, you end up getting charged for all your damage.
I know of a prolific tagger who got caught, but wanted to continue vandalizing, so he changed his tag by one letter to avoid legal trouble.

Now it seems a bunch of artists are doing the hiding thing... I can think of 2/3 but i know there is a lot more. It would be interesting to discuss why artists do it. Is it because they are up to no good? Is it because the people behind the artist are in fact the 'artists' and don't want to get rumbled? How about the ones that were also hiding but 'Came Out' also......
I will start with Banksy - and we all know why 'HE' does it, but what about the others..........

Alright, what if, and hear me out, Lonely Farmer is Banksy's dad?
We've all seen LF post inside info like the bbay tape, the achoo sketch, etc. He's obviously on the inner circle. But wait, there's more...
Banksy, being the political machine he is, realized he wasn't able to make personal art because of the notoriety he/his name has now. Enter Gonefellow. Banksy creates Gonefellow so he could make art that he has fun with, that's more personal to him. He makes the Dumbo print, and who other than LF (his dad in this story), is driving Dumbo off after being shot down by the political side of Banksy's art.
and that my friends, is why those two artists do not disclose their identities.
