dr.d IN PRISON, by s-editions on Apr 14, 2008 8:20:49 GMT 1, dr.d looks to have been really busy over the past few days!
Her bus stop antics can be seen at banksyforum.proboards82.com/v45index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=17299
By the way, there is just one 'H.M.P. London' railing board remaining. Most interesting offer gets it. And please note we said 'interesting' - which is not necessarily the same concept as 'highest'. Please email sales@s-editions.co.uk if you are interested.
Love, All @ s-editions

dr.d IN PRISON, by slowmo on Apr 14, 2008 9:08:20 GMT 1, I feel that London doesn't deserve the tag open prison? Whats wrong with London. I like the concept, but reckon somewhere like Hull would have been much funnier (no offence meant to any Hull members). London is one of the most cosmopolitan cities on earth and offers great opportunity to people.

dr.d loves London, and everybody at s-editions lives in London and loves it too. However, With more surveillance cameras than any other city in the world and even local councils tapping phones, London becomes more like a prison to its citizens every day. Have a look at www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2008/01/29/ntap129.xml for details of how many organisations are permitted to listen to your phone calls. Admittedly that is countrywide, but the density of surveillance affects London more than anywhere else.

I don't think it works at all... I'm assuming it's to do with CCTV? But for me there is nothing that makes you stop, look, think about this work. I'd just drive or walk straight past it... there is nothing in it that grabs me, no humour, nothing pretty to look at, no meaning.

dr.d IN PRISON, by slowmo on Apr 14, 2008 9:30:25 GMT 1, I know that Britain is the most watched country on earth, so why not Britain instead? Would then make more sense.
Maybe Dr D should consider why the cameras are there in the first place, the breakdown of society, neighbours no longer willing to look out for nieghbours for fear of being stabbed, mob rule and general fear of walking some of these streets, I would say that intimidation and mob rule make parts of London more of a prison than any CCTV camera ever could. As for tapping the phones, well it stopped planes being hijacked at heathrow, it also lead to the arrest of the failed second London bombers.
Unfortunately infringement of civil liberties in terms of being watched is a very small price to pay if it helps prevent another 7/7 or results in the imprisonment of a violent offender?
EDIT: On reading this I can see the similarities of todays reality and 1984 though

From www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2008/01/29/ntap129.xml :
"Those being bugged include people suspected of illegal fly-tipping as councils use little known powers to carry out increasingly sophisticated surveillance to catch offenders."
A fairly hefty price to pay in terms of infringement of civil liberties wouldn't you say?

dr.d IN PRISON, by insite on Apr 14, 2008 10:17:57 GMT 1,
Well as littering is illegal and cctv is supposed to be used for the prevention and prosecution of people breaking the law I'd call it an appropriate use. However over the top it appears it's the fault of the car owner that this case has been taken to crown court and is costing us so much.

Why?
Put the two side by side... there is absolutely no comparison whatsoever...

Dont see how you can compare a bill poster against this stunning piece of street art which is three stories high and really well executed.

Err, we don't see any posters in the photos. They look more like metal road signs to us.

dr.d IN PRISON, by Prescription Art on Apr 14, 2008 12:12:59 GMT 1, These are great on the streets. Like many people i'm very concerned by the erosion of our civil liberties, and by the proliferation of various surveillance mediums. But at the same time I don't have much compulsion to buy one of these for home.
If they couuld catch fly tippers with CCTV though, I might start to come round to it!

dr.d IN PRISON, by form01 on Apr 14, 2008 12:25:24 GMT 1, I think these pieces are cool as they have got us talking about the issue's of surveillance. There is so much art out there which is all about style and finish and no substance.
But Banksy's pieces does have every thing.

The message may be similar, the artistic merit may not... that's what people were talking about when you referred to

I reckon I must be well right wing as I would like to have fly tippers shot! Good that they are bugging them, wonder what they get, gonna dump some mattresses off tonight John, what you up to? Oh, I thought I might get rid of some old washing machines in the ASDA car park.

Silky, one is a piece basically trying to state that London is a worse place for CCTV. The other is a humorous take on the issue and makes no judgement, its left for you to decide whats going on and indeed what the actual message is.
