New HMRC rules for bedroom dealers, by mandem on Jan 5, 2024 14:20:33 GMT 1, People are often negative when they feel they are being taxed (and won’t ever think taxation is fair) and that seems to have been the common view so far. Not everyone has to have the same views, but it looks like I am more open to accept tax as I don’t perceive as tax as evil, but inevitable. Sorry for not joining in and moaning about it. It was your brain dead comments about 'benefit cheats' that I was referring to. Straight out of the tabloids.🤦
They've all got iPhones and Sky TV and all that though

New HMRC rules for bedroom dealers, by Happy Shopper on Jan 5, 2024 15:25:10 GMT 1, The real shame of all this is that it is going to seriously effect collectors of all kinds of things, not just art, or the stuff collected on here. All kinds of things that people buy, sell, and buy more… stamps, watches, toys… anything. Stuff people do as a hobby, for fun, which may end up lucrative, but wouldn’t be considered an “income”.

Have you seen Hot Fuzz, I think this is a spoof account, although equally I wouldn't be surprised if it were true

I don’t remember a time when I didn't want to be a police officer... apart from the summer of 1979 when I wanted to be Kermit the Frog

New HMRC rules for bedroom dealers, by Gunny on Jan 6, 2024 19:00:57 GMT 1, In fairness who really cares if they inform HMRC, just submit a tax return and keep records of all your costs, I've had to do it for the last 13 years. In reality you could sell £50,000 on ebay but if you only make a gain of say £6,000 on the sale between you and your Mrs you won't even have to pay any tax assuming it's your only gain. If you're trading you probably want to incorporate your sales anyway in which case this won't apply as you'll be on a corporate account. All my companies run quickbooks so my entire bank feed goes straight into my VAT returns and end of year accounts. As much as I think HMRC are c**t, it's actually not that difficult to keep your affairs in order with a bit of tech and good systems. Quickbooks don't have software for the margin scheme or am i wrong?

Unfortunately not neither does Xero last time I checked, I just use a spreadsheet for that, VAT on the margin scheme is pretty complex obviously you can’t claim on your inputs for items sold under the margin scheme but you can claim for general business expenses. Also the location of the buyer and the final destination of the piece is also relevant (as with standard VAT sales) so most accountant packages that I know of don’t cover it.
