Damien Hirst - The Archangels, by LJCal on May 5, 2024 22:06:10 GMT 1, "Pope Francis has warned against the excessive commercialization of art and the destructive impact of the market on creativity during a speech to artists at the Venice Art Biennale." Respectfully but what makes the Pope an expert on either art or the art market?

Respectfully but what makes the Pope an expert on either art or the art market? You are absolutely right and I agree with you. Someone told him what to say and he said it as expected. His speech sounded like that of someone from the arts sector. I don't quite understand why all the ''leaders'' of the world's religions have not yet started a hunger strike, to loudly ask for world peace.
By now you know very well which toilet paper is used in the bathroom. This behavior of some ''men'' doesn't surprise me.

Damien Hirst - The Archangels, by Horatio Nelson on May 6, 2024 7:21:07 GMT 1, When more than half the posts in an 8-page thread about the โArchangelsโ are concerned with pricing/value/resale, with hardly anyone discussing the biblical allusion, perhaps the Pope has a point.
Or, more likely, Pope Francis is just bitter after missing out on another Heni allocation and his salty comments should be ignored.

I havenโt heard the speech, but I should imagine itโs a lament at how art has become a commodity as opposed to a meaningful tool to explore the human condition.
Preach
(I fully understand the irony of posting that statement on UAA ๐)

So the pope makes a speech to artists. Am I the only one who finds that a bit odd?

Damien Hirst - The Archangels, by Fast Eddie on May 10, 2024 0:20:53 GMT 1, I think the Pope is doing his job. But, it is not surprising that he is stepping in: Historically, the Church has been the single most important driver of fine art production in the West. Since about 300 AD, I'd say...

That was certainly true 500 years ago. But it is certainly not true today. The current pope has zero influence on art in the present age.
