I'D LIKE TO BUY THE WORLD A GOD, by s-editions on Apr 26, 2008 20:04:28 GMT 1, dr.d has just delivered a pair of original pieces. They are stencils on newspaper of a new design she is working on for a print release later in the year. One is on a double page spread of the Financial Times and the other is on a double page spread of an Iranian newspaper that a friend brought back from Tehran for her.
The text is based on some large billboards she did last year, which were based on modifications of famous advertising slogans (in this case 'I'd Like To Buy The World A Coke'). The one below went up in Brighton in October. It was the first one of her 'Slogans Run' series that she did, hence the code number on the upper right corner of the billboard hoarding:
Further details of the newspaper stencils can be found at www.s-editions.co.uk .
We will be announcing some very exciting news regarding dr.d within the next couple of weeks.

I'D LIKE TO BUY THE WORLD A GOD, by paulypaul on Apr 26, 2008 23:24:30 GMT 1, A friend brought the paper back from Tehran! All the way? OMG! Is there nothing this artist will not do to be true to the work! I'm soooo impressed! Put me down for 8! ยฃ2,400 well spent....
Nah - not really. IMO, complete fucking rubbish...
I mean, like, really bad....
Not just average 'Oh, I'm not feeling it' bad.
More like 'Are you mental? I'll give you a quid for it 'cos my chips are going cold and I can wrap them in this...' bad.
Like, 'Put down the crayons and get a proper job' bad...

I'D LIKE TO BUY THE WORLD A GOD, by bobbyt23 on Apr 27, 2008 2:51:46 GMT 1, I dont like this at all. I like the idea of how DR D does her work on a big scale but I think it's crazy people will pay that amount of money for what is just a bad slogan on a newspaper.
Anyone could knock that up.

I'D LIKE TO BUY THE WORLD A GOD, by Heavyconsumer on Apr 27, 2008 3:24:10 GMT 1, Bobby, with respect, I think that's a little unfair of you. I don't see you complain everytime any other gallery posts their latest release.
As for the work in question, I have to say that I think this thread took a turn for the better when Franky changed the subject to Krispy Kremes!! I'm extremely disappointed with this work from Dr D. As for the valuation of the work, clearly something is lost on me, as I cannot get my head around why anyone would pay such a sum for this. I'd really like someone to try and justify this pricetag on artistic merit, I'd be interested to see what they can come up with. Regardless of the price I'm challenged to understand the piece better anyway just for what it is. It seems like someone messing around with fonts and leaving words jumbled up in a meaningless order to me. Sorry, I just don't see anything interesting in this piece at all.

I'D LIKE TO BUY THE WORLD A GOD, by Harveyn on Apr 27, 2008 9:10:39 GMT 1, Had not looked at dr.d's work much until this morning and I must say a really like some of her work.
On this particular piece when you live with statement being made for a while it brings more substance to the piece. I think my first opinions last night were made in haste. Its a great sentiment and I think the image works well.

I'D LIKE TO BUY THE WORLD A GOD, by Heavyconsumer on Apr 27, 2008 9:48:40 GMT 1, I like plenty of Dr D's work, mostly her street projects though (but there are some nice prints too). I'm having trouble getting my head round this piece though. I can't see the substance you refer to at all and as for image, what image? Regarding the statement, it just makes no sense to me in this medium at all. Zero connection at my end, but clearly I'm missing a beat here!

I'D LIKE TO BUY THE WORLD A GOD, by alsbabar on Apr 27, 2008 16:40:52 GMT 1, there are some artists who are brilliant at billboards/large outdoor installations, but dont quite have the same impact when producing prints - and Dr. D is one of these.

I'D LIKE TO BUY THE WORLD A GOD, by Heavyconsumer on Apr 27, 2008 18:02:56 GMT 1, Goffy, yeah I guess so, I quite like Eine but would never want the vast majority of his indoor work. As mentioned I like Dr D's outdoor stuff in many instances and some indoor pieces of hers too, but as others have mentioned, while there are various "street" themes that lend themselves very well to a silkscreen or other printing methods for indoor hanging, I don't personally like this format at all. However often, a dull image can be transformed with an inspirational or provocative message. My personal feeling is that this piece lacks that edge. I feel quite strongly that it works better on a billboard, but is still not for me in this case.
Bobby, nice one!
S-editions, thanks for the PM, it's appreciated as always . Yes, it did clarify my "blurred" perspective in giving me some additional insight to the artist's process. I realise that had you posted that in the thread, you could have been accused of aggressive sales tactics, based on the grief you were given a while back. I still feel that the work is weak and even if I had understood in the most detailed sense what the artist's thoughts had been, I don't think I'd have enjoyed the piece any more. I don't want to insult anyone, especially the artist who has more talent than I ever will, but I still think the work is weak visually, (which is something that I find a huge turn-off normally, with a few exceptions) and based on a rather underdeveloped philosophy, from someone who may well be likemided on such matters. It's always nice to feel that there's some understanding though, so thanks for providing that and good luck!
