I Am Alive In Los Angeles By Mike the PoeT
“The real flavor of Los Angeles takes some time to get to. By digging deeper you can find the soul of Los Angeles. It’s much more subtle than the usual stereotypes.
– Mike the PoeT, excerpted from Los Angeles Grows Into Itself
Mike the PoeT’s passion for Los Angeles and Writing – as 2 separate entities unified as one – is nearly unparalleled. He’s a modern-day beat poet whose words exhibit an underlying thread of pure innocence and idealism, yet the way he delves full speed into the maze that is our diverse city…and makes it out happy – maybe happier – (and in one piece) shows an experience and understanding that seems drastically at odds with that. He has a genuine love for the city that I rarely see in most Angelenos, coupled with an intensity that easily goes unrivaled. What Mike exhibits here extends well beyond creativity; it’s a legitimate “love affair” with Los Angeles that stretches your own capacity to see and experience L.A. as a living, breathing being, and one that deserves to be held in high esteem. By reading I Am Alive in Los Angeles, your heart will race and pulse with the city’s own groove until all you hear is one-single-heartbeat.
Addressing a multitude of perspectives on the city, which can differ greatly from person to person, he interprets each through his own eyes and weaves them gracefully from the threads of a chaotic mess into one coherent puzzle, where each person and region represents a piece of this puzzle that, oddly enough, appears to perfectly complement the next. Whether you agree with one another’s tastes or views has absolutely no bearing on it; it’s the very fact that we are different that’s been successfully captured here. From the grittiness of the “ghetto” to the glamour of the wealthy urban areas to the seeming monotony of middle class life, it’s all captured with a fervent grace and zeal that doesn’t, in any way, patronize or “talk down to”; in fact, it’s quite the opposite – he’s sincerely in awe of what he sees, and it’s that enthusiasm which translates over beautifully.
Within these pages, he zigzags in and out of nightclubs and bars; zooms down Wilshire Blvd. and through the L.A. River, mourns the loss of our extinct orange groves; hops the Metro Blue & Gold Lines; takes a tour of L.A.’s artistic underbelly: graffiti; parties it up at old-school clubs like the Root Down; spends time reflecting at Sunset Junction; pays an homage to the thriving culture in South Central; reveres both the natural and manmade beauty in & around L.A.; proudly salutes the existence of Spanglish; and, overall, shouts loudly to the world, “I AM ALIVE IN LOS ANGELES!”
He’s taken all of those things that L.A. natives have become completely desensitized to – over-development, gangs, graffiti, prostitutes, nightclubs, fashion, traffic, immigration, public transportation, overpopulation, even the surrounding mountains, forests & oceans – the very things that make the city what it is, and gently cast a new light on them. It’s a refreshing re-introduction to the city that I’ve been born and raised in, and it’s acted as a much-needed jolt to my senses; an enthralling re-awakening, of sorts.
Interestingly enough, it’s almost as if he’s constructed the contents of the book in a way that mimics the city itself. It’s complex, it’s erratic, it’s low-key, it’s powerful, it’s random, it’s specific, it’s diverse, it’s grimy, it’s gloomy, it’s beautiful, it’s contradictory, it’s complicated, it’s simple, it’s “political” without really being political, it’s artistic and articulate, it’s elegant and intelligent, it’s honest and raw…it abounds with a life and vibrancy all its own, much like the city and its people, meaning You. Me. Us. Everyone. He recognizes, respects and admires the vast differences between the city’s populous, and it’s this very thing that he lovingly, and with the utmost care, holds up to the light.
It’s a scrapbook of L.A. memories & experiences frozen in time, and magically laid out in a literary forum presented for your consideration, meditation and introspection. What you find, what you see, and what you ultimately take to heart is completely up to you, but one thing’s for sure, even if it’s solely during the time that you’re reading his book, you will fall in love with Los Angeles again…and again…and again.
