Big Issue Charity Show August 9th, by zenkx on Jul 15, 2008 14:24:49 GMT 1, This Newsletter Doesn’t Know What Damage This Event Has Done Us
Yes we know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking, how could they? How could they do something like this? Black Rat of all people. And we know, believe us. We feel your pain. We’ve been in business, one way or another for over a year now, and during that time we have done our best to cultivate an image of hostile indifference coupled with that blank, specula gaze of someone who might cut you out of their lives at any moment. We have tried to appear cruel and vengeful like an Old Testament God. We are lean and wiry people. We enter the room like a knife. We are baleful. One look from us and it can curdle milk. And if one look doesn’t do it we’ll try two. And if that still doesn’t work we’ll take your milk outside and leave it in the sun for a couple of days until we’re damn sure it’s curdled now. Because that’s the kind of people we are. The kind of people who should be in prison serving time, but instead our out running a gallery and leaving your milk in the sun.
But then we go and spoil it by putting on a charity event for the Big Issue. And we swear we didn’t mean to. It was an accident. We just woke up one morning and did something good. Who knows why. We can’t remember. We were too drunk. Maybe we turned on the radio and found our hearts momentarily leavened by that whistley song from Peter, Bjorn and John. Maybe as we sat racked in front of This Morning with Philip and Fern, our dessicated brainpans knotted with pain and self-loathing, a sliver of sunshine squeezed through a chink in our black grizzled hearts. Like we say, we don’t know, we were drunk. Please try and pay attention. The fact is we’ve done it now and it’s too late to turn back. We’ve done a good thing and we’re just going to have to live with it. We’re not saying it’s not going to haunt us, and when the time comes we’re going to have to make our peace with the devil. But What’s done is done. There’s no use crying over it now.
Still we admit we thought about turning back a few times, but too many artists have signed up now. In fact so many artists we’ve lost count. 40. 40 artists have already signed up now, donating a staggering body of work in what we’re reluctantly admitting has to be one of the most impressive line-ups of this or any other year. This roll-call of kind and beneficent misguided souls includes Swoon, Eine, Dface, Dotmasters, Mantis, Matt Small, Ron English, Elbow-toe, Hush, Pure Evil, Julian Opie, Miss Bugs, Cyclops, Peter Blake, Armsrock, Beejoir, Nick Georgiou, Blek le Rat, Nick Walker, Labrona, Copyright, Peter Kennard, Anthony Lister, K-Guy, Gaia, Robert Sample, James Mylne, Jamie Reid, and Slinkachu, with others on their way.
And to make matters worse, neither the gallery nor the artists take any of the money. I mean Christ, what sort of damage is that going to do to our rep?
The show is on Saturday 9th August from 4pm, so bring the kids. If you want that is. Although knowing us we’ll probably pop their balloons and glare at them Or at least glare at their balloons. Or, you know, something.
See you there,
BRP
NB. Please don’t harangue us with emails and phonecalls about this show, and don’t jostle in the queue or saunter to the front, assuming our afro’d and brightly painted doorstaff know who you are just because you wrote a blog about Nick Walker once. Not only will it jar with the magnanimous spirit of the event, but seeing as we’re not getting paid for this and have to get our credibility back somehow, we might just tell you to fuck off if you complain.

Big Issue Charity Show August 9th, by BlackRatPress on Jul 17, 2008 11:10:24 GMT 1, no no no please please please dont sleep rough and stay overnight and do crazy queuing. unless you are doing it sponsored to raise awareness of homelessness in a big issue supportive stylee. I cannot promise that some works will not be sold prior to 4pm on the saturday. The reason for this being that the primary purpose for the show is to raise as much money as possible for the big issue. even more than keeping everyone happy. and some artists have donated big expensive works. Most things will be available on the day and certainly all works below 2k. We've made it on a saturday so hopefully for those travelling from afar it makes life easier. Also no prints released for the show as we want to have a nice happy relaxed feel to the show and not forget its a charity event by getting caught up in a crazy queing bunfight fiasco.

Big Issue Charity Show August 9th, by fatherxmas on Jul 20, 2008 18:30:03 GMT 1, im confused. so the good stuff will be sold before the event and the stuff the main buyers dont want will be sold on saturday? i think the best idea would be to auction everything off in the room. everyone has a chance of buying and if you really want a piece you'll pay what ever the cost and like you say its for chairty and everyone pays that lil bit more knowing that the money is going to a good cause.
or maybe on the peices which will have alot of interest do seal bids..
ps: i would like to buy the dface piece...

Big Issue Charity Show August 9th, by Billy Sport on Jul 20, 2008 23:02:57 GMT 1, so its not all being auctioned? is there an auction?, if pieces are below £2k? how will it not evolve into said bunfight? mass rush to the entrance, woman children and small animals crushed under foot as (insert name/description of usual suspects here) rush in to buy everything up without looking?

Big Issue Charity Show August 9th, by dinomaa on Jul 22, 2008 23:16:09 GMT 1, Any chance of getting an idea of how much the cheaper pieces might be up for. Want my first OG and this seems like a good place to buy, but I have some what short of a grand to spend. Will I be able to pick anything up for that kind of figure?

It also shouldn't be forgotten that BRP aren't making a penny from this and that all the proceeds are going to a very good cause.
