LAST CHANCE FOR OSAMA!, by baileymontana on Sept 2, 2008 22:35:23 GMT 1, My point exactly, but worded better. The artist does a street piece. Three and a half years later they reuse it for a print edition. What's the problem?
The main issue is your sales tactics. As a gallery if you want the art you represent sold to the fans of an artist there is no need to sell it to another gallery at all...hold on to it if you have enough faith in the art and artist in the long run, as the gallery this is your job. If you're having to sell them to another gallery Dr D should put her work with this other gallery.
In my opinion putting info that another gallery wants to buy them all just comes across as a desperate sales ploy. Show us the image and people will buy it if they like it.

LAST CHANCE FOR OSAMA!, by stickee on Sept 2, 2008 22:36:47 GMT 1, osama holiday is a bit out of date (the concept) by about three and a half years!
And I cannot believe that photoshop was not used for the print edition...the colouring on the face is classic lazy photoshopping.
What benefit would you get from taking a photo of that piece and then redoing it (without photoshop ) to the point that it looks like the stock images again apart from the colour bits now look like they have been done in photoshop.
Nothing wrong with using photoshop (unless it looks like photoshop straight out of the box) or you deny its been used

LAST CHANCE FOR OSAMA!, by stickee on Sept 2, 2008 22:47:37 GMT 1, so if Pepe jeans didnt give permission for the paste up outside then how come they have he posters in the window? you got permission for that and then pasted the wall without permission or you guys saw the posters in the window and thought it was a good idea to paste the side of the shop? The stuff in the window was absolutely nothing to do with dr.d. She did the side of the shop because it fitted in with the stuff in the window. Artists do think about this stuff you know - they don't just wander around with 48-sheet pasteups in their pockets. At least dr.d doesn't.
HAHAHHA Google is great! and either someone is talking crap to you or you are and think we are all stupid
So whats the real story?
or shall I spill the beans?

LAST CHANCE FOR OSAMA!, by stickee on Sept 2, 2008 23:11:06 GMT 1, From woostercollective:
At 5am this morning, Dr. D struck again. This time on Portobello Road in London.
Last night Jamie Reid laucnhed his new clothing collection at Pepe Jeans. For Dr. D, the enormous 'Nowhere Buses' poster on the outside wall of the shop was just begging to be modified. Mother tells us - "It had to be done quickly though as there was some concern that Banksy might get there first and apply his magic to the big white space in the middle. Both Glen Matlock, bassist in the Sex Pistols, and Jamie Reid were overheard by a spy at the party wondering if anybody was going to do anything to the poster. Well now they know..." 48 sheet paste up to do 2 faces and some text? or did you hope that we would think dr.d had done the whole wall and not just slapped some faces on the pepe/reid piece on the wall
and seeing as your gallery is part of seditionaries (name used for the sex pistols clothing by westwood and mcclaren) I find it hard to believe that you knew nothing about this shop display or the clothing line itself

LAST CHANCE FOR OSAMA!, by bmjt on Sept 2, 2008 23:42:50 GMT 1, If Stickee is right, I can't help but laugh at the awful tactics of S-Editions.
Can't you see a pattern emerging here? Every time you release a print, a (Removed) of negative criticism follows, who are you expecting to like this? If you can't get street art fans on a forum devoted to the movement to like it, there has to be something wrong. You just have to find better artists than this.
As far as the 'you have to do a load of street art before we'll sell your work' argument, i'm slighty appauled, so you won't sell my art, regardless of quality (which shouldn't be difficult given your roster ) until i've repeatedly broken the law by pasting my work in the public realm. I can only imagine that this is to give you some free advertising.

LAST CHANCE FOR OSAMA!, by Daniel Silk on Sept 3, 2008 0:54:40 GMT 1, I have just been having a bit of a read of this thread and am not particularly happy with some of the comments made But I also don't support the creation of this thread in the first place, and the style of promotion used
Galleries need to take more care and responsibility for their profile and image online, and so need to expect a bit of backlash if they step over the line. BUT! some comments made against them on this thread are totally unnecessary and those members will be watched more closely in the future to make sure these are not targeted attacks.

LAST CHANCE FOR OSAMA!, by rosstierney on Sept 3, 2008 1:24:32 GMT 1, i do try to hold back when posting in an s-edition thread, i almost feel sorry for them. but then i think why? after numerous instances they're still doing themselves no favours. this thread is the epitome of their ethics. if they don't agree, they need to understand it's how they're portraying themselves.

LAST CHANCE FOR OSAMA!, by stickee on Sept 3, 2008 1:57:55 GMT 1, The sad thing is in my opinion is that this street piece kind of works if you have the prior knowledge that the buses were already on the wall and were there to be messed about with....but I still don't get the need for a print of the thing.
i hope for Dr.d's sake and credibility that she had nothing to do with all the crap and spin that has gone on tonight and I would be interested to hear what Mr Reid has to say on S-editions approach to the sale of the prints and where alot of the credit lays for that wall in the first place.

The street piece was done by cutting down two 48-sheets and recollaging Jamie's buses to make a new piece commenting about the fact that Osama had disappeared. It was also a play on words with Cliff Richard's film 'Summer Holiday', which was all about going on holiday in a bus.
Jamie didn't know about it until he saw the modification - and he was delighted.
We had nothing to do with the shop, as we have already said.
If you don't like a print, fair enough. However, there is absolutely no need to get all bitter and twisted about it. All we have done is offer an opportunity for people who want one to get a print at a reduced price. In our first post we said 'If you are not interested we are sorry to have bothered you'. Hardly a hard sell really.

This is a street art forum. We represent street artists. We certainly do not encourage breaking the law, but you should not be surprised that we expect artists to work in the public domain. It has nothing to do with advertising and everything to do with getting public art out there.
What are you doing on a street art forum if you disapprove of pasting work in the public realm?

Just got in from doing stuff...
The wall was done in 2005 - it's not there anymore. Thanks for you comments about the print. We always try to get the best quality possible. The image isn't everybody's cup of tea, but that's fine! It would be boring if everybody liked the same thing.
dr.d has nerves of steel. Planning is different depending on the piece. The Osama piece was done within 5 hours of first seeing the wall. The Coldplay piece in front of the Brits took a bit more time, as security etc. needed to be arranged.

LAST CHANCE FOR OSAMA!, by mcster on Sept 3, 2008 8:11:20 GMT 1, Forgetting the debate on the Osama print for the moment, I have to say s-editions and Dr d have been very generous to me, quite the opposite to the image they seem to have on here. At some point in the near future, once all is is done and dusted with my work who seem to do everything at a Dinosaur's pace, I'll post exactly why. But suffice it to say it would be hard for me to fault their generosity.
Having said that, I also appreciate that the promotional tactics they use seems to get up some people's noses and wonder if rather than posting the work for sale on this board, whether any new work, from any artists or galleries that is for sale, would not be better being posted (or moved to) the ebay board, where people can find what is for sale all in one go. That way the problems are solved IMO?

We are not promoting illegal work. Many artists ask permission to do street work, and you could do that.
We exclusively represent street artists, therefore to be considered you would have to do street work. This is a street art forum, so that should not surprise you.
