"M1" by MEAR ONE
The paper used was Strathmore 500 Series Bristol 4-Ply Vellum Surface (Cold Press). Each edition is unique and employs elements of his style he has perfected over the years. He started by sketching [with charcoal or pencil] characters, ideas, and philosophies on some of the editions. He would either sketch on the paper before paint application [of the first layer of brown] or use charcoal to draw in the still wet layer. The oneโs he did not initially draw on, he spent more time painting, distorting, and experimenting. He then applied a varying layer of gesso, which helps give the amazingly rich texture.
The gesso would also be distorted and manipulated heavily, especially using many of the techniques perfected in his โLive Artโ. Depending on the effect and end result he way striving for, the gesso was applied to either the entire surface, parts [to show the under drawings], or splattered and scrapped heavily. A layer of yellow was then applied over the gesso and worked much further. He then switched up to Orange on some of them, which then led to a beautiful Orange/Yellow mix on the later editions when Yellow was used again. Throughout each step of creation, he would do such things as throw water on the paper [from his paints], sand it down, scrape it w/ his tools, shellac or splatter the paint and continually try to experiment and take things further.
The 2-color phoenix logo stencil was then hand cut by MEAR and sprayed differently for each edition. When dry, he then sketched more on top of most of the editions [some truly look so much like paintings, he left them be]. To sign it, he gave each one a huge street style tag. He also used an oil based paint marker that, even when dry, still gives it an extremely wet look.
The name of this series and style of edition is โMono Distortionsโ, this one being titled โM1โ. MEAR created the name to reflect his process, which heavily involves distorting, and manipulating his materials and the paper constantly.

Baurmann Gallery Editions, by Baurmann Gallery on Jul 22, 2008 0:30:13 GMT 1, New mono-distortion release: July 25th 2008 @1pm PDT
A new edition will be available this Friday entitled โel angel amplificado de los angelesโ. It will be the third in the mono-distortion series, the first 2 being โM1โ and โLegalize Artโ. Each background is hand-painted, scrapped, attacked, splattered, and distorted heavily through the application of MEARโs interlaced techniques and styles. He used pearlescent paints on the background that give each piece a luminous glow, especially when light refracts from various directions and highlights the gold and metallic shine. The white background to each angel was hand painted (using acrylic and brush) using a hand cut stencil, then uniquely detailed extensively by MEAR. He then added quotations with a philosophical connotation that delves into the thoughts behind his work. Overall, the layering of different techniques and mediums (such as using pencils, colored pencils, markers, industrial street markers, hand painted stenciling and hand painting brush techniques) create a multi-layered, mixed media experiment of continued progression in his art and expressions.
The info is below:
A new mono-distortion will be available this Friday, July 25th @ 1PM PDT for $500 + shipping from MEAR ONE and the Baurmann Gallery.

Baurmann Gallery Editions, by Daniel Silk on Jul 23, 2008 17:50:48 GMT 1, The amount of work Mear One puts into each piece is just mind blowing! He makes it look just so easy I think most artists would spend weeks perfecting the image, but with Mear One its looks like it just flows out of him incredible stuff!

Baurmann Gallery Editions, by Baurmann Gallery on Jul 24, 2008 9:39:03 GMT 1, I am really glad you enjoyed the videos so much. I must have watched these at least 4-5 times each myself! I watch him paint all the time and I am constantly amazed at the new things I always see him do. MOTION has been incredible with his filming, so I look forward to continue to bring even more videos in the future.
SILKY, I definitely agree his painting looks like it flows extremely effortlessly, though the action and movement always make it extremely enjoyable to watch in my opinion. His can control when he paints a wall is amazing too. The clouds in the Dali Lama mural are a good example of something that blew me away when I saw how smoothly and precisely his was obtaining the effect he was looking for, like he basically saw it in his head and his hands knew how to manifest it.
Thank you all for the positive comments and feedback though!

Baurmann Gallery Editions, by top on Jul 25, 2008 12:21:41 GMT 1, As ever, process pictures are very welcome!
Fantastic to see how individual each piece is, as mentioned above, an OG for everyone really.. the variance of each piece makes it for me.
The links give tremendous insight into the amount of work involved and the skills employed - well worth a few minutes of your time ( I had to watch them all personally!).
Always nice to see the back catalogue
'The Awakening' looks like it is shaping up to be a real stunner. Always had a soft spot for the Egyptians! That sketch is a brilliant piece in it's own right..I'd have that in an instant! Interesting to see how Mear adds paint to such a sketch. I would imagine that there is a reason () for the edition size to be a multiple of 11 ;D
Thanks again Derek, any canvas in the pipeline? I know they are out of my price band, but any pics would be really appreciated.

Basically, MEAR and I did not feel comfortable selling the rest without detailed photos, which will be posted this weekend. Please take a chance to check them over(when posted) in detail due to their uniqueness!
I am also going to work all weekend attempting to accommodate requests as well to make everyone as happy with their unique edition who purchased 1 so far. Please email me if you purchased an edition and have a preference. On Monday, I will also attempt to accommodate specific edition requests.
Thank you all again for the support and tremendous sales!
All my best,
Derek

Baurmann Gallery Editions, by Baurmann Gallery on Jul 28, 2008 19:06:00 GMT 1, All of the purchase emails have been responded to. Thank you all again for the support and I hope everyone is happy with his/her to be received edition. Please email me if there are any other questions or anything else I can do.
The FLICKR page has pictures of the remaining to be released editions. The SOLD editions are listed as such. Please email info@baurmanngallery.com starting at 1pm PST today to purchase one of the soon to be available editions. The same method will be used to try and accommodate as many people as possible with one of their top choices. After the purchases are received, the top 4 choices will be taken and attempted to be worked out. Though no guarantees can be made with this next sale either, there was great success (in my opinion) in accommodating the first round of requests.

Note: the colors vary depending on the lighting, due to the pearlescent paints used.
