Baurmann Gallery Editions, by Baurmann Gallery on Aug 28, 2008 2:37:47 GMT 1, I am very proud to release the info on the next print:
New limited edition screen-print release: September 5th, 2008 @1pm PDT
โThe Awakeningโ will be released next Friday through the regular release method, which is explained below. It is a 19-color limited edition screen-print, with 3 of the colors being hand embellished by MEAR with colored pencils. We wanted to continue to demonstrate the skill of MEARโs process and techniques by pushing things even further. The paper we used is Strathmore Bristol Series 500 3-Ply Plate Surface (Hot Press). MEAR used acrylic paint instead of standard printing inks, which turned out beautifully in my opinion. We always appreciate the support and know the times have gotten a lot tougher economically. Quality is something we can never sacrifice on though. As with all of our other past editions, we have tried to bring a new level of print making at the absolute lowest price we can offer (with the first 3 series of prints, Mono Distortions, Street, and Hand Created Separations Series). We know we should be charging more for these but want to provide an opportunity to obtain MEARโs work affordably to his fans without us having to sacrifice on quality.
But thanks to the continued amazing feedback, incredibly kind emails always received and the positive response on everything so far, we are truly happy to work so hard to do this. MEAR even blew me away on this edition by adding the 3 hand embellished colors. MEAR also spent almost a month creating and printing these editions. After the 1st test print, he also redid 11 of the separations. Through this print was almost 3 times as much as the previous editions to produce (and took even longer to create and includes hand embellishment), it will only be $250 + shipping. As always, please email me if there are any questions.
The info is below:
A limited edition screen-print will be available Friday, September 5th @ 1PM PDT for $250 + shipping from MEAR ONE and the Baurmann Gallery.
To purchase, please email info@baurmanngallery.com starting at 1PM PST on Friday, September 5th @ 1PM20PDT. All editions will be sold on a 1st come basis, with a 1 per person limit. Immediate payment is then expected, as the Confirmation/Purchase email will explain. Please email info@baurmanngallery.com if there are any questions.

Thanks SILKY!!!
We definitely appreciate that the time and effort put into these is recognized. After MEAR hand drew, painted, and airbrushed the separations, we also had them shot onto film and applied a dithering technique to produce an even more stone like finish. When he did the first test print, we even had to re-shoot all of the separations and apply the dithering affect again for all of the changes he made. For the 16 used, he drew 27 total separations total (as he redid 11 after the first test print). So yeah, he has been working hard on it in my opinion to say the least...but seeing the results make it all worth it for sure

Baurmann Gallery Editions, by weaver on Sept 1, 2008 12:10:41 GMT 1, There was a great documentary on mear last week on sky arts, preceeded by about 5 mins by a decent doc / interview with Shep, looked to be a couple of years old, as he was signing the exploited prints during the filming, but nicely imformative none the less. There is a rawness to mear's work that even though its a print, it still looks messy and something you might find on the street, in a doorway or some such thing, similar to alot of kinseys work.

Thank you Lee! I truly appreciate those kind words immensely!!! Actually, itโs ironic you say that as our printers call the studio โthe Factoryโ. In terms of the vibe down there it is amazing the diverse assortment of talented individuals that always drop by it has but there is one main difference in my opinionโฆMEAR is there every day that the printing occurs and is actually involved in every step of the processโฆand those pesky gnomes are not running off real fakes in the night
Here is the video of him creating the current edition showing the process more in depth:

Thanks SILKY!!! It's always great to see the pieces evolve too in my opinion, as you can see so many diverse techniques be demonstrated (like when he was using the pallet knives on the cityscape or his blending and layering of colors like you mentioned) when you watch him paint a piece from start to finish. We have really been trying to show MEAR's process further with videos for sure.

Thank you SILKY!!! I know MEAR always appreciates hearing feedback like that, so I will make sure to pass it along to him! I am sure he will be incredibly flattered though!

LOL...Thanks for letting us know. If anybody has a link to it, we would love to see how it turned out. MEAR has quite a few film crews always stopping by, so honestly we do really appreciate when we get told something is aired.
Thank you for the kind feedback as well. I am glad the documentary was a good portrayal of him and his work. In my opinion, especially in MEAR's tag/signature you can see that very raw but controlled style. The live art pieces are another great example of that spontaneity he constantly demonstrated on the streets. It is amazing the detail on the pieces he spends years on though, like his current in progress body of work. Those pieces have such attention paid to detail that the final product is so precise (you would not expect someone without years of formal training to be executing them). MEAR just see's things in his head though (like layering down a print or creating a painting) that allows him to interpret other's techniques and styles (such as Alphonse Mucha, Siqueiros and Salvador Dali to comic books and Robert Williams/Big Daddy Roth hot rod culture) extremely perceptively and really try to innovate on it and create his own. He has always had a natural artistic ability that has been cultivated his entire live. His own creative mind (behind his mother) was probably his biggest teacher and influence on his artistic style and subject matter and allows the constant evolution of his unique style.
He also definitely has a strong versatility he is continually trying to expand on. For example, the paintings that you can see that almost translucent glow (like his "Sha Clack Clack" and "Allegory of Complacency" on he interpreted techniques perfected by Maxfield Parrish and applied them in his own ways to produce the same glowing style results.
I think the rawness though will always be there in some shape or form (whether it be in his prints, live art, or incorporated into a painting style) due to him being completely self taught and always trying to reinvent the rules, versus just follow them. That rawness though is a little paradoxical though in my opinion due to how dirty, clean, raw, refined, effortless and detailed his work is.

Baurmann Gallery Editions, by Baurmann Gallery on Sept 3, 2008 11:07:36 GMT 1, Below are the remaining process photos. A few of the above were edited due to MEAR clarifying the process further to myself. Basically, the print was even more complicated due to MEAR using screens with trappings. This allowed him to blend and use multiple acrylic paints/colors on a single screen. This is definitely shown in the 15th color series with how many different paints he mixed. So technically, there are more than 19 colors (for example, with the first screen he used a black and a blue). Another example is his different variations of oranges, both mixing them and applying them independently through utilizing the trappings in the screens. Definitely check out the process video directed by MOTION if you would like to see the creation of the print in depth further. Also, the hand embellishment was not done by colored pencils but rather MEAR dipping a pencil eraser in acrylic paint and applying it to the edition for the top green, blue, and iridescent purple in the chakra above the DNA strand.
10th, 11th & 12th colors laid down: 10th-(Orange-DNA strains and highlights w/ split screen for different orange on the neck of the bird on the headdress) 11th-(Yellow-highlighting of the 3 main faces) 12th-(Beige- crater on the moon)
13th color laid down (Purple on baby embryo and Horace figure):
14th color laid down (dark purple outline on figures and embryo): Not shown 15th color laid down (blue, magenta, cyan, red mix on a screen with trappings for 3 main character faces):
16th color laid down (white for the computer chip):
Not shown in a specific picture being laid down

Baurmann Gallery Editions, by Baurmann Gallery on Sept 5, 2008 13:44:35 GMT 1, Here are some photos of MEAR painting at Sunset Junction the other weekend in LA on the first day. It is a huge festival where they shut down Sunset Blvd and the surrounding streets in Echo Park at the Sunset Junction. It was a ton of fun and extremely crowded. Even the police seemed to be enjoying MEAR's painting
