Outside / Inside @ Carmichael Gallery, by skanky on Mar 2, 2008 17:24:45 GMT 1, Always find it hard to describe why I like something but I know what I like and I like the new work from Hush. I cant really see the Faile comparison and think its a bit unfair to constantly compare artists in this way.
Better than all the latest Faile offerings by a long margin.. Really? It's good that we don't like all the same things. Can someone explain to me what they think is good about hush, without reference to his prices or whether the work sells out. I'm not having a dig but am just interested in what you see in it?

But when I see Adam Neate, David Choe and all the Brazilian guys and girls I think that things are moving forward.

Outside / Inside @ Carmichael Gallery, by pezlow on Mar 2, 2008 20:33:42 GMT 1, Sure all artists borrow and appropriate. I guess it is how well they do it that is important. Of your 4 "faile" pieces above I would say that the faile is by far the best, followed by the Cept, then the gossell and the hush, well it just doesn't float my boat at all. Manga and the images of women that border on the gratuitous/exploitative and firearms... not for me.

Nice one romany! I have the same one and it's at the framers now.

Outside / Inside @ Carmichael Gallery, by romanywg on Mar 2, 2008 20:45:04 GMT 1, See my order would be Faile, Gossel, Hush, Cept. I am also a big Manga, Anime fan so there my problem lies. Personally I would much prefer to look at a Hush than a small black cross on a postcard drawn by one of a very important artists assistants. But as you say, whatever floats your boat.

Outside / Inside @ Carmichael Gallery, by mose on Mar 2, 2008 21:23:59 GMT 1, Why is it that when we see a collage most everyone reference faile?
because they don't know Mimmo Rotella, Jacques Villeglรฉ, and the rest of the New Realism movement from the 1960's, so people's frame of reference is Faile.
but then again, Faile wasn't really rocking that style themselves until Rotella exhibited in NYC back in 2004. After that, you can see some distinct movement in Faile's style toward decollage.

thats not my point. The point is that people systematically diss artists when they see "torn" collages/comic themes and label them as faile ripoffs. See where I'm getting at? Fyi I am a huge faile fan and do believe they're in a league of their own...

Lol, lets agree to disagree on this one fella.
White bust is immense BTW. Newly installed in the living room this weekend. Might go near the cross though if that doesn't offend you too much

I just meant that most people know Faile and have probably not come across their forefathers yet. So they can't reference anybody else, as they don't know them.

Outside / Inside @ Carmichael Gallery, by Jef Aerosol on Mar 3, 2008 0:38:11 GMT 1, actually, I had never heard of Faile (nor Hush) before I joined this forum, 6 months ago. Indeed, Faile definitely and immediately reminded me of the famous collage/decollage masters Jacques de la Villeglรฉ and Raymond Hains. There's also something of Roy Lichenstein... the elements borrowed to comic strips are quite "pop", the pin-ups are quite american sixties... (Is Faile an American guy ? How old is he ?) I've always loved Hains and Villeglรฉ's works, but Faile doesn't appeal to me... Probably a question of generation.
