Banksy
No surprises that the reclusive Banksy remains the most popular urban artist in the UK again this year. Demand for his incisive, thought-provoking works continues to sky-rocket as does his coverage in the media. His works continue to fetch staggering sums even in these difficult economic times.
MissBugs
The duo of Miss and Bugs, Muse and Artist, have rocketed from nowhere this year, with sell-out shows and collectors clamouring for new releases. Their work is a contemporary mix of spray, stencil and screen print, using iconic superhero figures and deft touches like 3D work and giant canvasses made up of thousands of badges. They arenโt afraid to take the mickey, point fingers at the ridiculousness of the art market and to show the greatness of a man in red tights.
Nick Walker
One of Banksyโs Bristol contemporaries, heโs a few yearโs older than the mysterious stencil giant, but the art world went crazy for his work this year, with originals and limited edition prints soaring in value. If youโve got a N! ick Walker, hang on to it. His star is set to rise.
C215
The Frenchman, Parisian Christian, literally lives for stencils. They are his passion and it shows. We love the life he puts in to an art form that is essentially about simple lines. You get faces filled with passion, expression and gesture. He is certainly one to watch.
Charming Baker
What a charming man. The artist lives up to his name and his work is to die for. Using a rich palette of colour his creations are still-life in some respects, but not as we know it.
Blek le Rat
The Frenchman who influenced Banksy has been relatively unknown on these shores. Plus heโd been hiding out for years after a massive graffiti fine from the French police. A big solo show in London earlier this year has helped raised his profile. His works are almost stark, but they are always gorgeous. Heโs always been a firm favourite of ours.
Pure Evil
Apparently a descendant of Thomas Moore, Pure Evilโs work does err on the side of humorous and letโs face it, dark, but heโs one to watch. With work for the Tate Modern under his belt, solo shows in the UK and Eu! rope, Pure Evil is pure genius.
Lidia de Pedro
Spanish beauty and art princess Lidia is certainly a rising star and one to watch out for. Her spirited, ethereal works come in a multitude of colour, symmetry and with some Spanish flavour. Prints are selling out straight off the press with barely a chance for the artist to sign them!
Screen Prince
Brighton printer Screen Prince takes his favourite figures from music history past and present and spins their lyrics into an amazing calligraphic swirl. Joni Mitchell, RunDMC, Prince, Bob Marley and Beethoven. They are a thing of beauty, printed to perfection.
Ben Allen
The boy's talent knows no bounds. Heโs on the speed dial of every hip interior designer in town and it shows. Find his work in the homes of stars, media moguls and now, in yours too.
Also keep your eyes peeled for more sensational works by Jasper Goodall, Static and Jean-Michel Baptiste. Not forgetting our friends on the other side of the pond. Coming from America, these two art greats are understandably hugely popular in the Land of the Free, and are set to make a huge impact here. We love the work of urban artists Ron English and Saber, get them while they're still affordable.

surely Blek, Pure evil and banksy are the only ones who've ever painted streets? sounds like a very dubious top 10 to me...

I beg to differ... he's only done legal walls. first time I'd ever heard of him was the Scrawl book, and he'd only painted that ape in the space mask image on canvases. no street stuff whatsoever. that book isn't even 10 years old either...
positive proof, some people really could sell ice to eskimos.

ArtRepublic - Top 10 Urban Artists 2008, by Tiki on Nov 29, 2008 21:33:41 GMT 1, What a stupid list! It's ridiculous, what the f*** has ben allen done in 2008 to impress anyone? Wheres Adam Neate? Whats Banksy done other than put on a no more than average show and release a print which clearly is only to stem the public giving up on him? Half of the artists are rep'd by AR!

ArtRepublic - Top 10 Urban Artists 2008, by Daniel Silk on Nov 29, 2008 21:39:15 GMT 1, I beg to differ... he's only done legal walls. first time I'd ever heard of him was the Scrawl book, and he'd only painted that ape in the space mask image on canvases. no street stuff whatsoever. that book isn't even 10 years old either... positive proof, some people really could sell ice to eskimos. I can see this thread going in another direction remi, which is fine, I never said his street work was on illegal walls. what about C215 or Miss bugs? no street pieces?
True! and its not about street work legal or illegal URBAN art, and URBAN art of only this year
I will give up now ;D

FOOTNOTES! Nick Walkers been riding this scene for the last couple of years. I hope he had a reality check at the Herakut show the other day....he may be able to cut a stencil but imo he has no artistic talent.

I agree that this list is utter crap, but i cant put Blek before C215 for street work in 08. Blek has put in the work over the years, and has my respect for that, but his output this year has been print based with very little or no street pieces i can think of or any that have come to my attention, apart from Cans. But this list is purely based on sales which is BS

Yeah, you would think Dan would have been on the list.
