"Grey Area" A solo exhibition of new artwork by Boxi
Opens April 9th, 2009 with a reception from 7pm -10pm and will remain open till April 30th.
โI am drawn to the incongruous narrative in figuration. My works aspire to polarize the stability of what is at first perceived to be harmless or sweet but in reality turns out to be pathetically desperate or tragic or vice versa. A dark disillusioned romanticism pervades through outโฆ (along with) confrontational themes, such as paranoia, disappointment, expectation, grief, mistrust and other upbeat reflections of our times.
โIt is in this state of reflection, this โgrey areaโ of ambiguity and blurred truth that I have found myself in, a place where trends and crashes in the market aggressively threaten and pressurize social behavior. Making life-sized figures that articulate this uncertainty is a way for me to come to terms with the phrase โof our timeโ.โ

About the Artist:
Born 1974 in Kent, England, Boxi completed his studies at the London St. Martins School of Art with a BA Fine Arts degree in Painting in 1996. He has lived and worked in Berlin, Germany since 1999, joining REINKING PROJEKTE in 2007.

BOXI solo exhibition at Carmichael Gallery, by Carmichael Gallery on Apr 6, 2009 1:49:36 GMT 1, BOXI will be releasing a new editioned piece 'Sell Out Is The New Buy In' at the opening of 'Grey Area' on Thursday, April 9th.
Boxi created this piece to comment on the precarious state of the current art market and the eBay secondary market that flourished over the last few years. The hand sprayed six layer stencil edition of 45 will only be available to attendees on opening night between 7pm and 10pm OR via eBay. The edition will appear online as a BUY IT NOW item on eBay at the same minute as the gallery doors open on Thursday. Considering the humor of the piece, we just couldn't resist.
According to Boxi - "A sudden shift in values floods the prestigious auction houses and trickles right down to the ridiculously hyped private sales on eBay with fevered anticipation, with descriptions like, "Recession proof investment" and "Sold out within seconds", "from an edition of 750" etc." he observes. "The edition 'Sell Out Is The New Buy In' is a sad but honest spin on the terms used to sell such works that now return to the market since the hype has cooled with the telling, 'selling because of changed priorities'."
