Urban Angel's Summer Group Show - Discussion/Pics, by rosstierney on Jul 15, 2009 10:43:49 GMT 1, also the reason the street piece works is because of what has been on the wall previously, the print/canvas edition obviously does not have that context
i doubt the street piece was put up purely as an advert for canvas/print
thought obviously went into the idea/execution/placement because of what has been on the wall previously
you said it
I feel the "one hit in Shoreditch, one print in gallery a few days later" artists could actually learn from Cartrain!
you've got to be kidding
so far he's had 2 releases off the back of the 'stunt'

Urban Angel's Summer Group Show - Discussion/Pics, by schlomo on Jul 15, 2009 11:14:58 GMT 1, I dont agree sorry. Mantis has always been more interested in street work than selling pieces, i dont think for one second he put that up thinking he'd make a run of prints or canvases out of it....

Urban Angel's Summer Group Show - Discussion/Pics, by rosstierney on Jul 15, 2009 11:47:26 GMT 1, obviously, but now it's completely tarnished
think before you speak then
think it's pretty disgraceful behaviour that a street piece such as Mantis's turns out to be placed purely as a means to selling prints and canvases, i've lost a huge amount of respect for him with this.

Yeah, a new one for the show. Bloody 2m sq mind you.
As for the whole Mantis comments. I think I'm right in saying that he hasn't done any commercial work for 2 years now (something like that). The work we have are basically commissions he did for people because they asked him. He had some over, so gave me a few on paper and wood. That's all.

Urban Angel's Summer Group Show - Discussion/Pics, by schlomo on Jul 15, 2009 16:26:14 GMT 1, Mantis did exactly the same thing 2 years ago with that awful 'All Fall Down' Spinal Tap-like stencil of the midgets dancing around a mushroom cloud - One up on the "street", next thing you know there's a print edition. All in all every bit as predictable as his art.
leave it out! what about the billboard pieces, and the road signs? oh and the other pieces he's done on the streets that he didnt print? (flower girl springs to mind, would have loved that on my wall....)

Urban Angel's Summer Group Show - Discussion/Pics, by shortcut on Jul 17, 2009 13:02:09 GMT 1, just a quickie to say thanks to everyone who made it down last night, we're all really pleased with how it's turned out.
it think it was worth keeping numbers tight on this one so everyone had a bit of breathing space, plus it's like a sauna in here at the moment anyway!
