Faile to move to a Major Gallery!, by arcam on Jun 19, 2008 1:30:24 GMT 1, What you guys arent probably aware is, how much he raised for the Palestinians, allowing a family to buy their land, which otherwise they would never have had such an opportunity. Was this via a donation or via employing them to buy some Banksy's?

Faile to move to a Major Gallery!, by Gentle Mental on Jun 19, 2008 3:09:14 GMT 1, Gandhi was once asked, "How can I know that the decisions I am making are the best I can make?" He answered: "I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him. Will he gain anything by it?"
For this, I think, Jet Set, might've done the most good.
Of course, at the price of an angry rich guy returning home without a trophy souvenir to show his mates.
I would be pissed too, honestly.

Faile to move to a Major Gallery!, by bobbymeachamjr on Jun 19, 2008 3:17:20 GMT 1, sorry guys but I have to comment on Jetset, I know him personally and he is a good guy, his intentions are good and well received. What you guys arent probably aware is, how much he raised for the Palestinians, allowing a family to buy their land, which otherwise they would never have had such an opportunity.
Profiting from the cause in the guise of charity is a disgrace. Feable attempt @spinning

what profiteering was there, covering of costs? Santas Ghetto 2007 was/is not a recognised charity, it was a project where all the proceeds from the sale went to palestinian projects. If Jetset is guilty of profiteering, then everyone who sold a SG print, or an item from Bethlehem are just as guilty!!!
What i get is that Jetset is being singled out for being far more honest and transparent then most would ever on here - fair play to him in my opinion and well done for taking on something he didnt need to.

Faile to move to a Major Gallery!, by alsbabar on Jun 19, 2008 10:24:09 GMT 1, actually come to think of it, how many people who sold their SG 07 pieces either from visiting Bethlehem or buying via POW, donated any of their profit to charity, or indeed paid up to 4% artist rights on the resell?

Faile to move to a Major Gallery!, by Prescription Art on Jun 19, 2008 10:44:27 GMT 1, Alsabar, I appreciate what you're saying, but I also recall your absolute militancy when it came to people selling things from Bethlehem after you got back. It's a strange change of tack from you.
Personally though, well I feel that if some Palestinians managed to profit from the prints then that's a good thing. I'm not sure about this idea that only Westerners who travelled over were allowed to buy stuff. They have entrepreneurs in Palestine too.....
EDIT: Not saying I approve of anyone buying 6 prints though. That is greed.

Alsbabar, while i can understand your staunch recommendation of jetset, I can not condone his actions as far as you have. I also thought it was a strange rule that Palestinians were not aloud to purchase prints from SG07 but that was the rule, Im sure POW wanted total control of where the profits went to and did not want them to end up in the wrong hands. Jetsets process of buying prints from SG07 has made a mockery of the rules, and by doing this, he has left himself open to criticism. On the 4% artist rights, have you ever paid this yourself when selling a print privately?

Faile to move to a Major Gallery!, by alsbabar on Jun 19, 2008 11:09:43 GMT 1, Prescription - agreed and I would stand by my reaction to those who simply went to Bethlehem to return and immediately sell what they bought - Jetset didnt however, but also his intentions were less to do with making a quick buck, but more so to assist in raising funds for good causes and projects.
Ronhill - fair point, but I wasnt stating that anyone should, more so posing the question

or a short one!
Artists living in Europe take note: under a European law called the Artist's Resale Right you may be entitled to some of the money when one of your paintings is resold. So, what's the catch, besides it not always being easy to know when you're paintings are resold?
Well, firstly, Artist's Resale Right doesn't apply to be a painting you're selling for the first time (well, you get money from that anyway!). Secondly, the artwork must be sold for more than 1,000 euros. Thirdly, there must be a gallery, dealer, auction house, or agent involved in the sale. Sales between private individuals and between an individual and a museum don't qualify for Artist's Resale Rights. Oh, and you still need to be alive and the painting still your copyright to get Artist's Resale Right

sorry mate, modified my response before you commented. Yes it would make an interesting discussion, but the one I am interested in is, protecting the integrity and character of a personal friend.
In fairness to jetset, he did try and make his point, suffice to say, there is a lot more to his story, so lets not judge him on the few accusations and comments made on here.
Dont take my word for it, PM him privately I am sure he will tell you more.

You are welcome.
I thought your point about POW wanting to retain control over the profits from SG was a sound one. Am sure with all the unrest there they walked something of a tightrope over the good causes to support.

Its not a decision i would like to make, and is better left to POW to distribute the cash raised.

Faile to move to a Major Gallery!, by guest2 on Jun 20, 2008 1:00:11 GMT 1, Yes, it's true... Why would anyone "announce" this to a web forum full of a bunch of kids with no real money to spend on art? Faile used to care about the community here... Did anyone else notice that every single Faile piece at Cans Festival was removable? Where do you think all of that art went? It was sold, or other prior arrangements were made with their new dealer.Right now, the people that are in the know and have the money are posturing; the collectors are being informed and insider trading schemes are being developed to take them to the top of the pyramid. This takes about a year to position an artist for Blue-Chip acceptance... What load of f ucking bollocks. The easily-removable Faile work was quickly moved into storage (and remains their property) to prevent further work being stolen after one piece got nicked.
What piece got stolen?
