22 Artists, 1 sculpter & a shit load of paint, by puppyjuppy on Apr 13, 2009 21:06:08 GMT 1, HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD. Buy cause you like it not for the names. plus i saw alot of artists painting live on the saturday giving there art away and selling canvas for dirt cheap FWIW Snik, your work at the show (from the jpegs) looks GREAT and I thoroughly enjoyed checking it out in the "new artists" section here too - really sharp, striking stencils that look like a lot of work goes into them and a great finished effect. But I wouldn't dream of paying you a monkey+ for something you could reproduce several times an hour if the fancy took you, unless I deemed it to have some resale value later, as like many/most of the collectors in this scene, my budget is limited and I like to have the option of changing my collection round from time to time. I have and will continue to support artists from this forum and think it's a vital roll those of us without talent can play in trying to help new artists make it and contribute to this scene. We're your market talking to you! Whether you choose to listen or not is up to you, but please don't question the values we employ in our collecting, or how often we leave our keyboards (Grafter), as it really isn't the point here. It wasn't having a dig and have tried to be respectful, but the point is, a supporting body of work, previous success and current demand, does affect the price of art. If I'm gonna drop ยฃ50 on something for the wall, I can totally write it off, but for ยฃ500 I want to know it has some kind of residual value. Can you support asking that money by showing ebay sales or any other recorded price-points for your work in this ball-park, or are the figures plucked from thin air? If the latter is true, while your work may be cheap to most art collectors, it seems a bit pricey for a scene which revolves around an "art for the people" principal. PRO.... QUALITY! Sounds like a fantastic workshop/performance art event and I'd have loved to have been able to experience it, but he hasn't hit the nail on the head at all. Have you checked out the prices of their work online? I can pick up the Dan McCarthy print for USD$47 (shipped) and it's a stunner!!! I bought a print for USD$85 the other day from a guy with 27 pages of gig poster art (Jeff Wood) over on EB!!! Perhaps more relevant is that in Jef Aerolsol's forum, he offers commissions for the same sort of money these guys want - how many gallery shows has he done?!!! The list goes on. I don't think we're moaning about price, I think we're pointing out that these guys are being unreasonable with their pricing. There's a big difference. And take note, the only people who've come out and stated that on-line prices are fair, are the artists involved in the event. Just to reiterate, my comments are genuine and not intended to offend any of these artists, all of whom I respect and most of whose art I enjoy.
EXCELLENT POST HC

22 Artists, 1 sculpter & a shit load of paint, by PRO on Apr 13, 2009 23:41:09 GMT 1, I think its all down to the greed of gallery's because they take such a big cut of the artists profit (say40%) the artists (who is normally skint) feels to make money they have to put up there prices, bit of a viscous circle because then no one wants to take the risk and buy there art. I have had loads of commissions made for me at very reasonable prices by cutting out the middle man and contacting the artists direct most of which are very easy going and happy to help you. But i still think art should be bought because you like it not because you might double your money in few years time.

Well said, HC. When you get into even the 300+ range, it's always nice to know that you can at least get close to square if your tastes change, a top becomes available, etc. I'm NOT putting value above talent or taste, just saying that it allows you some flexibility & freedom to purchase when there's a market history to support your addiction.... errrr, I mean hobby
I've bought a bunch from artists on this site over the last couple of months (I'm a newbie) and have been absolutely impressed with everything AND everyone. Especially love that 50-100 range... You can talk yourself into that ALL day ;D

Absolutely, and there's still plenty of nice work within that price-range! If you want a few pointers, go through the past 10 pages or so of the "ยฃ50 thread!" There's some great art in there, by some exceptional artists!

22 Artists, 1 sculpter & a shit load of paint, by Deleted on Apr 14, 2009 10:03:57 GMT 1, following your argument through to its logical conclusion HC - how many artists discussed on this board now have a residual value anywhere near where galleries try to sell their originals at? I'm seeing Eine's ; Walkers; Dfaces; even recent Banksy originals falling way below the perceived value level galleries place on them. Would you therefore join me in saying perhaps 'as a whole' those trying to make a big profit need to re-appraise what they're doing? I find it very odd to criticise this low end of the market without also criticising the next level up at least

22 Artists, 1 sculpter & a shit load of paint, by Heavyconsumer on Apr 14, 2009 18:29:34 GMT 1, Yes, I think you're spot on Bad Robot - it's definitely not exclusive to the bottom end of the market. Not sure about Banksy OGs though and I'm totally ignorant of the top end of the market I'm afraid. It seems EVERYTHING was relatively overpriced - although no doubt Banksy OGs will remain beyond most of our means and I'm equally sure that he will be remembered and his work considered an investment for years to come, wherever it's pricing stabilizes. There is a much lengthier discussion here though and I'm not sure how much of it is relevant to the thread.

That 50 & under thread is kinda dangerous, to be honest It's easy enough to justify 1 or 2 at 50-100, but there's SOOOO much cool s**t on that thread that a man could get into some serious trouble with PayPal and a wee post-pub buzz to boot... ;D ;D ;D

It was indeed a great exhibition. Work was excellent. Everyone was very friendly, and I didn't go to the live paint - which is when I believe the artists gave their work for free, or for the price of a beer. Great work, nice people - what more do you want?

22 Artists, 1 sculpter & a shit load of paint, by thorkil on Apr 19, 2009 13:33:21 GMT 1, Yeah, the live painting was great, it seems everyone was having a lot of fun. I personally got a 'Lola' on a vinyl for dead cheap and one of Don's handsprayed Queens fabulous piece of work.
Does anyone know a bit more about Don, as I can't find any website for him nor any previous works? Anyway he was a real gentleman and did a very nice dedication for my wife my baby daughter and myself.
Thanks to Grafter for this show so far the best for me.
