Ian francis...feeling a bit unloved..., by Richard on Sept 25, 2008 19:39:31 GMT 1, I love Ian Francis and believe he is more talented than almost all artists discussed on this forum - and I am not afraid to say it.
Recently though, his works on eBay have plummeted in value and many are going onsold.
Are others just not feeling him at the moment?
I just can't understand how anyone would buy something like Star Eyes for ยฃ300 when they could get an edition of 50 Ian Francis off eBay - which is far better (IMO).
It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on it.
And below are some examples of his work

Ian francis...feeling a bit unloved..., by Cocteau 101 on Sept 25, 2008 20:21:32 GMT 1, Just has never seemed to be flavour of the month despite the quality of his work - might be a blessing in disguise in the long run - I hope so I've got every print he has produced from RP and Blk MKt and a set from Collectors prints - thats 20 I reckon in all, they look stunning but just not fully appreciated by the masses or the flippers.

Ian francis...feeling a bit unloved..., by solar77 on Sept 25, 2008 20:24:42 GMT 1, The street art print market is where the crazy money is thrown around these days. I think street art lends itself to the print medium better than art by more traditional "painters."
Outside of the Laz connection, Micallef and Francis really have nothing to do with street art and I think prices reflects that. They are in a different genre; one where the price gap between prints and originals is more wide. Don't get me wrong, I do think the blk/mrkt prints are stunning.
Full disclosure: I have several Francis originals, but none of his prints.

Ian francis...feeling a bit unloved..., by Richard on Sept 25, 2008 20:42:46 GMT 1, I am not sure why Micallef is being mentioned in this thread - IMO his work is no where near the level of Ian's. I know many disagree...but I just can't see it myself.

Ian francis...feeling a bit unloved..., by solar77 on Sept 25, 2008 20:45:11 GMT 1, In my case it's because those two and Denning are the only artists discussed here that have never put anything on the street (at least to the best of my memory). I love both Micallef and Francis.

Ian francis...feeling a bit unloved..., by edcase on Sept 25, 2008 21:07:11 GMT 1, Note there are one or two of his works at the impending auctions, it will be interesting to see what they sell for. I believe Laz also still has one canvas left circa 10k+vat.

Ian francis...feeling a bit unloved..., by Daniel Silk on Sept 25, 2008 21:09:58 GMT 1, Ian Francis is very skillful, but I find some of his pieces hard to really see whats going on I think in a similar way to some of Conor Harringtons work. Both top quality Artists! but that style of art is always gonna only appeal to a small percentage of the population The average bloke off the street is always gonna connect more with the Urban and Street art.

Ian francis...feeling a bit unloved..., by slowmo on Sept 25, 2008 21:34:33 GMT 1, Very well painted, prints don't really work (having seen them they just look a little flat), also perhaps if you own one, why own more? Prints so far have pretty much all been girls in abstract landscapes, so perhaps they are a little formulaic? I don't know, just trying to think of reasons why his prints don't sell. As for originals, they sell very well indeed and are gorgeous (having seen them, they are very nice).

Apples and oranges. Street art and traditional gallery paintings can both be enjoyed in their own respective contexts. I can appreciate the wit of a Banksy and the technical skill and depth of a Francis.
I know some average blokes who prefer Bacon and some who prefer Warhol. To me, that's a similar distinction. To each his own

Ian francis...feeling a bit unloved..., by papillon on Sept 26, 2008 1:24:14 GMT 1, love his work. Never been blessed enough to see his original paintings in the flesh.but hope to soon be remedying that ...
Though if any one is up for showing me one in the flesh i would be very much obliged. ( i forget the testosterone on the board-don't read too much into that)

Ian francis...feeling a bit unloved..., by solar77 on Sept 26, 2008 1:25:04 GMT 1, I consider myself very lucky to have picked up a canvas recently while his works are still just about affordable (for me at least) and it will be very interesting to see how he progresses his style over time. Nice piece - I haven't seen that one before. Was it a commission? Looks pretty big...50"x36"?

Ian francis...feeling a bit unloved..., by papillon on Sept 26, 2008 8:22:33 GMT 1, which is good for the rest of it. It's nice to actually be able to afford great work for once. I'd always rather be able to have art that i love, regardless to other peoples perceptions. Financially of course in the current economic situation it helps to feel art keeps it's value, but that should never be it's purpose.
He's a talent for sure, but while other people aren't pushing his prices up i'm happy, wider availiability for fans.

I have only seen 2 Ian Francis prints - Devouring Bunny and A Girl Sleeps Through The Strorm. They quality of them is phenominal and on such heavy paper that when you look close up it is almost like they are printed on canvas. I would strongly disagree that his works don't translate well on paper. Although I haven't seen any others so I guess these may be different.

Ian francis...feeling a bit unloved..., by Gallery My Arse on Sept 26, 2008 10:19:10 GMT 1, I own a canvas so am a little biased, but I also think the prints are incredible. I've got Deathstar Explodes and A Japanese Couple... in the same room as the canvas and they look stunning and at the moment are a bargain to pick up on the secondary market. It's just the flippers can't make money on his prints.

Ian francis...feeling a bit unloved..., by graffoto on Sept 26, 2008 10:30:30 GMT 1, not sure i'd ever pay over $100 for a giclee reproduction of a painter's work... regardless of the image or who signed it.
I think this is key for many people - a screen print is more a work of art in itself - think Blake / Warhol, here as a glicee is little more than a poster reproduction of a painting - regardless of quality - all this of course could change with an artists repuation and medium (photography is a differnet beast to painting) - but I believe this is why the resale value is lower than screen prints
Nice Art though none the less - and amazing originals

how dare you post a biased comment...! seriously though, mr francis should be feeling not only loved but very proud of the stunning body of work he has created for his second solo (currently showing at KDF)... the response from his collectors has been 100% supportive. regarding the prints that Ian and BMG produced - we worked very hard to ensure that they were the best possible quality we could attain from the original paintings - and I agree with the comment that they are not intended on being works in and of themselves, but reproductions. and i'm delighted that we were able to get those to the folks that really wanted a francis on their walls.
cheers! BMG

Ian francis...feeling a bit unloved..., by veralynn on Sept 26, 2008 20:40:44 GMT 1, I own a couple of Ian's prints, Amy Allen and A Couple Lose Track - both framed up chez Vera and looking bloody superb, I do agree that 'flippers' can't turn his prints.
Where they are selling now offer great value - put them on the wall and love them, I think they do translate reasonably well as prints, funny how everyone who owns them loves them and don't seem to have any intention of selling them - why's that?
