Ian Francis at Kinsey/DesForges, by beasty on Sept 6, 2008 8:37:15 GMT 1, Well, the show has officially sold out on the preview. So much for discounts, snausages - there's nothing left I bought one of the 36x50" pieces and am really psyched. Anyone else throw down for one?
All the 36 x 50 pieces were good. I was tempted by the cheerleader piece but only if a discount had been available( and it wasn't unfortunately).
Which one did you get?

Ian Francis at Kinsey/DesForges, by Zippy on Sept 6, 2008 16:20:44 GMT 1, thank you for posting the link. I would say that htese are some of the best IF pieces I have seen. I am not an IF expert so I may not have seen everything he has done but these are truly different class. Prices arent cheap but at this level of quality, they dont need to be. Congrats on all who have bought and I dont expect to see any on the secondary market.. but if anyone is disappointed when theirs arrives, please let me know!

Good Man!! That's a lovely piece of work and was one of the standouts for me. If I didn't have something else in the pipeline I would have tried to get that one myself.
Good to hear it's gone to a good home.

Ian Francis at Kinsey/DesForges, by artyfarty on Sept 6, 2008 21:24:43 GMT 1, I was too slow off the mark to get any of these. I heard they all sold in under 15 minutes of the e-mail being sent out!

Ian Francis at Kinsey/DesForges, by snausages on Sept 7, 2008 22:13:26 GMT 1, Well, the show has officially sold out on the preview. So much for discounts, snausages - there's nothing left Good, that means there's over 100 thousand less dollars in the marketplace now which means less competition I have to deal with buying some contemporary art this fall. If you love it you love it but either way this stuff is pretty risky to drop that much on particularly with the recent slump in the economy and marketplace. But congrats if you got what you wanted.

Its actually much less risky than most...

Ian Francis at Kinsey/DesForges, by Gallery My Arse on Sept 8, 2008 8:56:29 GMT 1, If you're buying as an investment then long term it's a no brainer. The buzz flying around the US about Ian is huge and people who have traditionally dealt with Warhol, Basquiat, Koons etc.

Ian Francis at Kinsey/DesForges, by snausages on Sept 8, 2008 9:15:16 GMT 1, Where do you get this information? That's some awefully big name dropping and I don't think I.F. will come in anywhere close to them ever. Myself, I've only seen buzz among the alt.art.scene.

Ian Francis at Kinsey/DesForges, by Gentle Mental on Sept 8, 2008 9:27:52 GMT 1, Will Ian be our next Warhol - i don't know, don't think so... cuz there's only one Warhol... hard to see 2... anyhoo...
But here's my take - these are what Warhol paintings would look like if he had known how to paint properly.

Ian Francis at Kinsey/DesForges, by artyfarty on Sept 8, 2008 12:15:33 GMT 1, Yes, I think we are privileged to be in at the start of something with Ian Francis. The style of painting, subject matter and sheer talent will see his star continue to rise.

really shouldn't do unnecessary exaggerated hype, it sounds desperate, and can only do harm if it weren't true.

You've only seen buzz in the alt art scene? How the hell would you know who's collecting his work unless you're the gallery selling it? Ian doesn't need any hype. Clearly, the art speaks for itself.
and FYI, there were a lot of LA collectors that have nothing to do with this "scene" buying at the show.

I'm just asking because I follow contemporary art much closer than I do street art and I've seen NADA about "Ian Francis buzz" except amongst this 'alt' scene. Maybe I just haven't seen it or am 'in the know.' But where do you pick this up from? What mainstream recognition does he have? Any fellowships or awards? Any work in major museum exhibitions or collections? It's a fair question if someone is going to throw that kind of comment out there.
Fancis is wildly talented but I could tell without even reading his bio that the guy is an illustrator. Looks like commercial work that I see in illustration annuals every year. Now that doesn't mean he can't have a long wonderful career. But I don't see anything groundbreaking or especially deep in the work. It's just that comparing I.F. collectors to collectors of Basquiat, Koons, Warhol is hyperbole to the extreme. Those guys broke major new ground. And Warhol could draw like a motherf**er. What made warhol a superstar was not being able to "paint properly" (no one would have cared if Warhol painted proper paintings.) Warhol was a superstar because he could paint but was like f**k that. I'm going to challenge the way we think 'painting properly' is and challenge what we think 'art is.'

Ian Francis at Kinsey/DesForges, by Gentle Mental on Sept 8, 2008 17:59:30 GMT 1, yes, IF is no Warhol... my point is Ian's work has the same wry, contemporary humour a Warhol has, and if Warhol were to make oil paintings, these could very well be them.
Wasn't knocking Warhol or IF at all. Just a tangent.
I suspect the guy who posted the "warhol, basquiat" buzz bit, one gallerymyarse, is someone trying to hype the show up so he/she could offload the prints from the last show. it's pretty obvious and sad.
